Ecology of the Salish Sea

• The coastal waters of BC & Washington State are
home to some of the worlds richest biodiversity.
• The region has also been home to the Coast Salish
People for millennia and in their honour is now
officially known as the Salish Sea.
• Technically, the Salish Sea is an Inland Sea and as the
map shows the ecoregion includes the shorelines,
ocean trenches, estuaries, rivers and forests.
• In common with other coastal waters around the
world, the pressure from human population, climate
change, ocean acidification rich biodiversity has seen
this formerly rich biodiversity in decline.
                                                            Map credit: Western Washington University

      • Salmon escapement
      • The many roles of Kelp forests
      • Pinniped population density (seals, sea lions)

  • We’ll hear about the “Blue Economy”, the concept that
sustainable management of the worlds oceans is not only
possible but that it can help coastal communities to
    prosper while simultaneously rejuvenating biodiversity.

Lynda Mason - Painter
The unexpected collaboration between my
uncle and myself, who he never knew resulted
in an exhibition in 2019 of sketches and
paintings called “Tracing Footsteps”.
Lynda will explain how this adventure came to
be: from the discovery of 75 year-old sketches
to the completion of 14 paintings
that illustrate the story. She will also take you
behind the scenes to view the anatomy of a
landscape painting and a portrait.
Denis Gobeil – Wood Carver
My name is Denis Gobeil, wood carver living
in Gibsons B.C. I like to imagine that every
piece of cottonwood bark has a face in it,
hiding beneath its weathered surface. It is
my art to reveal the face and to uncover its
expressions, which are almost human
expressions of joy, peace, kindness, humour,
doubt and compassion. Tree spirits are
organic art and I am blessed to be able to
share them!

During the Artists in the Studio course I will
demonstrate how I carve my art.
Paula O’Brien – Digital Artist
Paula is a long time digital artist. During her
digital art session participants will:
• Be introduced to the creation of digital
art on iPad, mobile devices & computers
• Learn the basic features of commonly
  used digital art programs/applications
• View the main steps, tools and effects
  used to create digital art
• Watch a step-by-step digital art creation
  process
• Be encouraged to try creating digital art
Karen Biddlecombe – Fabric Artist/Quilter
Participants will view the creation of a
quilted Mug Rug. - a small quilt placed
underneath hot drinks with room for a
plate with a little tasty treat.
• Learn basic quilting techniques,
• Explore the making of a ‘quilt sandwich’

The Secret World of the Microscope
• Microscopes are one of the key tools that have helped us to unveil the secrets of
  nature.

• They have given us the ability to view, study and try to understand previously
  invisible things:
   • we can now identify and study microbes, bacilli, viruses etc. – human health
   • we can view small structures within larger objects – engineering
   • we can study symbiotic relationships between organisms - ecology
   • with modern developments we can examine molecules, and these days even atoms
   • etc. etc.

• And we can use simple lenses and microscopes to learn about the world around
  us!
What will we cover?
 • We’ll explore how and why the microscope “reveals the invisible”
    • history of the microscope, from simple lens to the instruments of today.
    • we’ll cover significant discoveries where the microscope played a key role.
    • we’ll cover some safe, practical experiments that we can do as hobbyists
using a microscope in the kitchen, garden, on pond water …
    • we’ll learn what to look for when buying a personal microscope
    • each week we’ll have a chance to make our own slides and view them
    • every class will include “hands-on” activities, with each person having
access to their own microscope. Bring your own specimens!
    • AND WE’LL HAVE SAFE, FUN!
Observe the bacteria in our cheek cells
Look deep into your kombucha!
We’ll see crystals form
Examine the world in a drop of water or on
   the beach
The microscope allows us to
observe and study the
amazingly beautiful and
diverse tiny organisms and
plants thriving in our local
micro-communities.

 Images of specimens found at:
 Roberts Creek Beach, Smugglers Cove,
Dakota Ridge, garden pond, Secret Cove
How to use a cell-phone as a microscope
Presenter
• The class will be presented by Michael Bradley

• Class size will be limited to allow for each participant to
have access to a dedicated microscope for each class.

• Eyepieces and equipment will not be shared

• Laboratory and Covid protocols will be in force, all
instruments will be sanitised before and after use.

• The venue for this class is still being determined.
