REAL EXPERIENCE. REAL SUCCESS.
Dear Staff and Faculty,

Since its establishment in 2019, the Lindenwood Learning Academy has served Lindenwood employees
through virtual and in-person programming. Its purpose is to provide a platform supportive of the professional
success and personal wellness of Lindenwood employees, from the time of employment through retirement.
The Learning Academy partners with our colleagues to bridge the gap between your current level of employee
development and the desired standards for performance at Lindenwood.

Please carefully review the contents of the fall 2021 Learning Academy Catalog. This catalog is designed
to serve as a primary guide for our employees who seek professional growth opportunities. Through the
resources, opportunities, and support offered by the Learning Academy, our employees continue to expand
their capacity to positively impact the student experience at Lindenwood University. Dr. Porter has set an
aspirational goal for each employee to engage in 40 hours of professional development annually, for the
purpose of continuous improvement and growth. The Learning Academy is investing in Lindenwood’s most
valuable resource, its faculty and staff. Please join us on this development journey!

All the best,

Deb

DATE: August 17, 2021 TIME: 10:15 a.m. DURATION: 1.75 hours
LOCATION: Hybrid - Scheidegger Center for the Arts
WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Faculty, Adjunct Faculty
REGISTRATION: rise-launch.training.lindenwood.edu/
SESSION SUMMARY: Teach Students How to Learn: Metacognition is the Key!
21st Century students come to college with widely varying academic skills, approaches to learning, and
motivation levels. Faculty often lament that while students are focused on achieving high grades, they are not
willing to invest much time or effort in learning. This session will focus on the importance of helping students
acquire simple, but effective, learning strategies based on cognitive science principles. We will engage in
interactive reflection activities that will allow attendees to experience strategies that can significantly improve
student success by transforming students’ attitudes about the meaning of learning.

                                                                                                                      3

Cheating is a Choice - Instructional Strategies Promoting Better Learning Decisions
SESSION LEADERS/PRESENTERS: Dr. Lolita Paff
DATE: August 19, 2021 TIME: 10:00 a.m. DURATION: 1 hour LOCATION: Online
WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Faculty, Adjunct Faculty
REGISTRATION: cheating-is-a-choice.training.lindenwood.edu/
SESSION SUMMARY: Most decisions are based on internal cost-benefit analyses. “Do I work an extra hour or go out
with my friends?” “Do I write the term paper or buy one online?” The decision to buy a paper makes sense if the
perceived marginal benefit from buying is greater than the perceived marginal cost. Put another way, a student will
buy the paper/HW/assignment (or just not do it) if the marginal benefit of completing it is less than the marginal
cost of time and effort.
As cheating has become more sophisticated, so has the academy’s responses, with a great deal of attention
on reducing access to the “supply” side of the market. Frequently missing from the conversation are the ways
teachers can (and I would assert should) influence demand. Join us as we explore: circumstances and factors
associated with academic dishonesty; course characteristics designed to reduce motivation and opportunity to
cheat; and instructional strategies that promote academic honesty.

                                                                                                                4
DEDICATION
We are committed to developing a high-performance work ethic and dedication to discipline or vocation.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Adjunct Faculty
REGISTRATION: adjunctconference2021.training.lindenwood.edu/
SESSION SUMMARY: Welcome, or welcome back, to Lindenwood! Last year was an unprecedented one for
teaching and learning; in the wake of many disruptions, our faculty rose to the challenge of continuing to
provide quality learning experiences for our students. Lindenwood recognizes and appreciates the hard work
and dedication of its adjunct instructors, which is why we host this annual event where we recognize your
commitment and provide professional development just for you. At this year’s conference, we will launch the
R.I.S.E. Project, a multi-year effort to enhance the culture of teaching and learning at Lindenwood. R.I.S.E.

for all students. By participating in this year’s virtual conference, you will have the chance to learn more
about the project and to hear from a very special keynote speaker, Dr. Saundra McGuire. Dr. McGuire is

WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Faculty, Adjunct Faculty, Staff
REGISTRATION: See Lindenwell Challenge webpage for more information.
SESSION SUMMARY: We believe this is a wonderful time to pause and reflect on all that we have to be grateful for in
our lives. Too often we let the hustle and bustle of life command our attention, therefore, during these two weeks,
we want everyone to take the time to consciously practice gratitude. This challenge will ask that we all stop and
“think” of the things, moments, and people that we are grateful for, as well as submit Q2 moments to “thank” our
colleagues who have been helpful and kind to us this year. Join us as we practice having an attitude of gratitude!
