Commodores Welcome
Dear Members of the Esperance Bay Yacht Club,
I would like to welcome you to the 20/21 season, and start by acknowledging the great job
done by outgoing Commodore Stewart Wallace. That was his 6th term as Commodore, an
equal record to Nils Blumann’s great tenure.
I look forward to the opportunity to serve the club and hope I can bring as much energy to
the table as Stewart. The EBYC is a strong club and is highly regarded as one of Australia’s
leading regional clubs. It is unique compared to the city clubs in that it is almost entirely
volunteer based. I am pleased to say that over my 30 year involvement with the club I have
never been left wanting when I’ve asked for help. On that note I would like to thank all the
people who have lined up for the many committees’ and voluntary roles that will be required
to run another great season. They are too numerous to mention. I would urge each and every
member to ask not what does the club do for me, but what can I do for the club.
COVID may still provide some challenges & disruptions to normal operations. We shall deal
with them as they arise. Although last season was cut short it did give us the opportunity to
run a highly successful delayed prize night combined with our Christmas in July party. What
a stupendous night, thanks to our great social committee. We were scheduled to run the 125
nationals here this Christmas, however COVID has precluded this, so we will run the 125
state championships instead. We also will host the Hobie Cat State championships over
Easter. Both will be great events. Get involved.
Members of the EBYC achieved great results in sailing events all over Australia last season.
Good luck to those competing in major events this year. You are great ambassadors to the
club.
You will see we have scheduled some morning races this year. This is a new initiative
designed to address the shortage of support boat drivers for the afternoon. The division that
races in the morning will man support boats for the afternoon. There may also be opportunity
for some to try sailing in other classes as well. We hope you will embrace this change and
celebrate the positives that come out of it. Certainly support boat drivers is an area of critical
shortage so all help is appreciated, especially from the parents of junior sailors.
Over the past few years we have renovated the club & reroofed the dinghy sheds. Projects
that were years in the making to get them right & are now great assets to the club. Our next
and biggest undertaking is the replacement of the aging marina. This is a complex and
expensive exercise which will take a lot of effort to get right. We have an active committee
working on this, and have engaged marine engineers, and are seeking funding. Many thanks
to those members who have made donations towards the current studies to get the project
underway.
A big thankyou to our major sponsors, Esperance Rural supplies, David Grays, & CSBP, and
to all our numerous other sponsors, trophy donors, and grant bodies. We can’t survive without
them so please thank them and support them.
