COVID-19 Vaccine Information The COVID-19 vaccines are a safe and effective way to protect yourself from becoming severely ill from COVID-19. The vaccines are meant to reduce or eliminate hospitalizations and death - they do not prevent transmission of the virus or completely prevent you from becoming ill. There are 3 steps to get vaccinated: 1. Register and get a confirmation number: All older adults are now eligible to register. Register online 24-hours a day at: https://www.getvaccinated.gov.bc.ca/s/ Register by phone 7 days a week from 7:00AM - 7:00PM (9:00AM - 5:00PM on statutory holidays) by calling: 1-833-838-2323 Translation services are available if calling the registration number. To register online, you must provide: • First and last name • Date of birth • Postal code • Personal Health Number (on the back of your BC driver’s licence, BC Services Card or CareCard) • An email address that gets checked regularly or a phone number that can receive text messages If you do not have a Personal Health Number, register by phone or in-person at a Service BC Office. Find information about Service BC offices at: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/governments/ organizational-structure/ministries-organizations/ministries/citizens-services/servicebc 2. Book an appointment: You will be contacted to book a vaccine appointment when you are eligible based on your age and the Immunization Plan phases. You will book your appointment online or by phone. You will select a location, date and time. 3. Visit the vaccine clinic to get your vaccine dose. Wear a short-sleeved shirt and a mask. Arrive a few minutes before your scheduled appointment time. You can bring one person with you for support. All clinics are wheelchair accessible. You will be provided a mask if you need one. People who get their first vaccine dose will be notified by email, text or phone call when they are eligible to book an appointment for their second dose. If you are unable to travel to a vaccine clinic for an appointment due to transportation or health reasons, mention this during the registration call. This cannot be mentioned through the online registration process. You may be eligible for an in-home vaccination appointment. If an in-home appointment is not an option, WESN will provide transportation to and from vaccination appointments for eligible individuals within the City of Vancouver. We will be utilizing Black Top & Checker Cabs to meet client transportation needs. For more information, please contact Sumathy at servicesmanager@wesn.ca or 604-669-5051 ext 3. VCH will never ask you for your Social Insurance Number (SIN), driver’s license number or banking and credit card details. The COVID-19 vaccines are free. For the most up-to-date information, visit the BC Government website: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/covid-19/vaccine/register Or, find information on the VCH website: http://www.vch.ca/covid-19/covid-19-vaccine 2

Board of Directors Membership Update: WESN Members Matter - What mattered to WESN members in the good old days? We continue to reach out because, we do care about you and want to hear from you! We are looking for members’ remembrances, stories and visuals of early WESN. Many of us are new and would like to know how WESN came to be and how you or others were part of its creation. We have heard about Kay Stovold and about the marvellous vision she and others had which helped shape WESN to what it is today. We would like to hear from people from WESN’s past – those who were active volunteers or knew folk involved with WESN - and about the initiatives sought by folks like Kay Stovold. We would like to hear from you! This will help us compile a more complete picture of what mattered most then and how it has kept us anchored as we plan for the future but want to not “lose sight” of the reasons why WESN was formed originally. So, we have a few questions for you: • What memories of WESN’s past would be important for current and future WESN members to know about? (Share details please.) • Who were the instrumental people for the building of WESN? What were their visions for the society/ community of seniors? • Would you be interested in participating in or co-hosting a virtual event that shares WESN-related stories? • Do you have any other stories or suggestions to share? • What are you curious about in WESN’s history? • Who should we connect with to gather more stories of WESN’s past? • Do you have stories and memories you wish to share? • What past initiatives were there that we should keep in our memory banks? (For example, the idea of Kays Café, as a gathering place for seniors.) Would you prefer a live chat with a board member? Either email us at board@wesn.ca or phone Barclay Manor at 604-669-5051 and make a request. Provide your name, phone number, and preferred date and times to contact you. Watch for a summary of your comments, suggestions and questions in a future WESN communications as we look for the best ways to connect and engage. We look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for taking a moment to share! Warm Regards, WESN Membership Committee – Jane Goodridge, Alison Maher, Frank McCormick, and Bonnie Quam 6
Barclay Manor Suma Sudhir Manager of Community Services WESN will provide transportation to and from vaccination appointments for eligible individuals who do not qualify for an at-home vaccination within the City of Vancouver. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are currently unable to offer volunteer- supported transportation to and from appointments. Instead, we will be utilizing Black Top & Checker Cabs to meet client transportation needs. For more information please contact me at servicesmanager@wesn.ca or 604-669-5051 ext 3. Barclay Manor Kaitlin Hong Tai Manager of Programs There are several programs that I will highlight below. Although we are not able to offer an abundance of in-person or outdoor group programming yet for safety reasons, there are still opportunities to engage and connect with others, if you wish. See PP. 13-19 for more programs and details. Audiobook Discussion Group (Virtual): Listen to an audiobook summary and discuss it as a group. Foodie Explorations (Virtual): Watch or follow-along with a monthly cooking class. Gateway to Genealogy: Work 1-to-1 with our volunteer in the Computer Lab to learn new research techniques and about resources to help you build your family tree and learn about your family history. Barclay Manor Jenna MacLeod Administrative and Program Coordinator My name is Jenna and I am the new Administrative and Program Coordinator. I am so thrilled to be a part of the Barclay Manor team and look forward to getting to know all of WESN’s wonderful members. I have spent much of my career working in seniors’ residences in Victoria. I enjoyed getting to know the residents and finding ways to help them continue doing the things that they loved. I found that there was never a shortage of people with amazing stories to chat with. Since moving to Vancouver two years ago, I have been working in the insurance industry and I am so pleased to join WESN and get back to supporting seniors in my community. I look forward to the time when we can all come together in person, and I cannot wait to meet you and hear your stories! 7
Barclay Manor Ricky Jhauj Choose to Move Activity Coach Keeping active is a challenge for many of us, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. We have a great opportunity to be creative and find ways to incorporate activity throughout the week. Being active has been shown to improve one’s immune system, sleep, mental health, and happiness. Below are ideas on how you can implement activity in your day. • Follow a YouTube home-based exercise video • Get incidental physical activity by doing chores and grocery shopping • Complete stretches • Walk around your home during a TV commercial break • Walk outdoors to a desired destination • Walk with a friend • Dance to your favourite music Tips • When planning to sit for a long time, it is essential to also find ways to do something active such as walking briskly around the house or going up and down the stairs 2-3 times per day. • Start gradually if you have not exercised for an extended period or if you are trying new activities - emphasize progress and consistency. • Remember to physically distance, wear a mask and take the extra necessary precautions to stay safe and healthy. • Stay motivated by focusing on short-term goals, rewarding yourself and keeping a log. It is essential to reward yourself when you have completed a workout or reached a fitness goal. Keeping a log helps you be mindful of your progress. It helps you remain accountable and a great reminder to reflect on your accomplishments. If you have a certain medical condition or plan to become active or increase your activity levels, please ask your doctor if it is safe before proceeding. If you are looking to become more physically active, please contact me regarding the Choose to Move program. Choose to Move is a free, 3-month physical activity coaching program where I will be guiding you through developing a plan, tackling any barriers that arise and providing you with support, motivation and encouragement. You will also meet other older adults who want to become more active as well! Exercises are tailored to your interests and abilities. The Choose to Move program is personalized for each participant. There will be multiple groups of Choose to Move over the next year, so intake is always ongoing. For more information on Chooe to Move, turn to P. 17, visit http://wesn.ca/choose-to-move/ or connect with me at choosetomove@wesn.ca or 604-669-5051 ext 9. Choose to Move is brought to you in partnership between WESN, the Active Aging Society and the Province of British Columbia. 8
