Knights of Malta as a watchtower. In addition to the swimming pool,
the hotel has a private beach, two tennis courts, sauna and steam
bath and an adjacent 18-hole par 72 golf course, the San Domenico

Matera

Matera is one of the most interesting,
                                         unusual and memorable tourist
destinations in Italy. In the remote
                                         southern region of Basilicata (also
                                         called Lucania), still little-visited by
foreign travellers, it is a town famous
                                         for its extensive cave-dwelling
districts, the Sassi. Curious visitors can
                                         wander the lanes alongside the
                                         picturesque cave-filled cliffs, and learn
the history of this fascinating place.
The houses of Matera were abandoned in the '50s, when the government,
embarrassed by the descriptions of the poverty amongst the people of the
Sassi found in Carlo Levi's tale of his own exile Christ Stopped in Eboli,
relocated the residents to modern housing. The Sassi are slowly being
repopulated as trendy digs by artistic types.
