Description of research lines:

The research group focuses on those theoretical and practical activities capable of affirming the
need for the critical restoration of a fruitful dialogue between past and present. In this perspective,
the interdisciplinary group carries out an investigation into the critique, design, restoration and
construction of architecture, contributing to define a reference framework, albeit inclusive, strongly
specific to contemporary culture. Clarity with regard to disciplinary references and traditions,
attention to the relative graphic and theoretical legacies, a propensity for a selected transmission of
ideas in the increasingly homologated and globalized contemporary debate. In this sense, it aims to
position itself as a minimal research unit capable of offering cultural resistance for the defense of
architecture from the spectacular aporia of consumer society. The research activities are in the fields
of Drawing, History of Architecture and Restoration as well as Architectural and Urban
Composition.

Participation in research projects during the last three years:

Project title: ACER: Comparative analysis and reconstruction of certified stone-throwers for
museum exibits.
Scientific Responsible: Prof. Arch. Adriana ROSSI
Head of Research Unit: Prof. Arch. Paolo GIORDANO
Title of the call for proposals: Valere Plus 2019 call for proposals
Description of the research activities of the project: The project involves the construction of two
different types of stone throwers from the Roman-Imperial period. The authors propose to define
the launch parameters to update the current canons of experimental archaeology and to elaborate a
"certified protocol". Technological considerations will allow the construction of a pilot line. These
samples (virtual or real) can be included in an integrated and versatile communication system
suitable for different types of use and therefore exploit the most advanced technologies to enhance
and spread culture and promote a network of interest.
Staff involved: Paolo Giordano, Rossella Franchino, Caterina Frettoloso, Enrico Mirra, Ilenia Gioia
Partner institutions: Department of Engineering University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli
Project status: evaluated positively but not funded
Dates of submission/start/end of project: 2019

Project title: H.E.R.M.E.S. - Heritage as a development factor for the medical and economic
sectors.
Scientific Responsible: Elena MANZO
Title of the call for proposals: Valere Plus 2019 call for proposals
The issuing body of the notice: University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli
Description of the research activities of the project: The research intends to develop a system of
valorization of anthropized territories through the integrated reuse of natural and cultural
resources of disjointed places, but with strong tourist potential. Campania, chosen as sample
territory for its vast historical-architectural heritage, for its beautiful landscapes and for the largest
number of UNESCO sites, is also the second region in Italy for the concentration of thermal
springs, mostly disused or degraded. Yet, according to objective estimates, the sector of treatments
for physical well-being is one of the fastest growing and most productive in the economic budget of
nations. To this end, starting from the history of the territory, together with the analysis of the
physiographic, socio-economic and cultural characteristics, and of material and immaterial values,
the Campania spa system will be studied as a possible driving force for future policies for the
valorisation of the territory, with a view to sustainable development.
Personnel involved: Elena Manzo, Anna Giannetti, Francesca Castanò, Chiara Ingrosso, Claudia De
Biase, Manuela Piscitelli, Marina D'Aprile, Fabiana Forte, Roberto Liberti
Project status: evaluated positively, but not funded
Dates of submission: 11 February 2019

Project title: Made in Italy. mapping the international renown of italian design culture after WWII /
made in Italy
Local Scientific Manager: Francesca CASTANÒ
Title of the notice: PRIN 2017
Description of the research activities of the project: The research is based on a systematic
reconnaissance of the theme of export and dissemination of the Italian culture of the project beyond
national borders. The aim is to re-propose the framework of the actors, identify the fundamental
works, trace the geographies and chronologies of reference and investigate the technical,
geopolitical and cultural reasons that since the end of World War II have made the project and the
construction site qualified areas of affirmation of Made in Italy for several decades. From
infrastructures to industrial plants, from theoretical elaboration to individual buildings, from
design to urban planning.
Personnel involved: Mario Buono, Francesca Castanò, Chiara Ingrosso, Raffaele Marone
Partner institutions: Politecnico di Milano (Resp. Arch. Alessandro de Magistris), Istituto IUAV
(Resp. Prof. Arch. Marko Pogacnik), Università di Roma La Sapienza (Resp. Prof. Arch. Marzia
Marandola).
Project status: not funded
Date of submission: March 2018

Project title: Protection and valorization of cultural and environmental heredity of Eighteenth and
Nineteenth century Royal Parks in southern Italy. Protection and valorization of cultural and
environmental heredity of Eighteenth and Nineteenth century Royal Parks in southern Italy.
Scientific Responsible: Prof. Arch. Paolo GIORDANO
Title of the notice: PRIN 2017
Description of the research activities of the project: The great Italian monuments sometimes have
dark sides that limit the attribution of value they deserve. The design, history and restoration of
architecture, botany and geology assume, in cases like these, the role of cultured tools capable of
bringing out from oblivion and abandonment natural and built realities that could perform a very
different function in contemporary society both as a cultural testimony and for the sustainable
development of territories where the monumental heritage exists, resists and persists. A particular
case is represented by the architectural and vegetational heritage of the parks, gardens and royal
estates created by the Bourbon crown in southern Italy between the eighteenth and nineteenth
centuries.
Personnel involved: Paolo Giordano, Saverio Carillo, Alessandra Avella, Fabio Converti, Luigi
Corniello, Francesco Scialla, Gianluca Manna, Andrea Improta
Partner Institutions: University of Palermo, University of Sannio of Benevento, University of
Naples Federico II
Project status: evaluated positively but not funded
Dates of submission/start/end of project: 2017
