WELCOME
On behalf of Ronald McDonald House Charities UK, I am delighted you are able to join ‘Light up the
Night: A virtual gala’.
We are thrilled to bring you an evening of entertainment and stories from the families we have
supported to your screens for you to enjoy from the comfort of home.
The last year has undoubtedly been one that none of us have ever experienced. At the Charity, we
have faced enormous challenges to our service delivery amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite
this, we have reason for celebration this evening. Whilst our Houses are currently running at lower
occupancy levels than usual to safeguard the health and safety of our families and staff, I am
extremely proud that all 11 Houses continue to provide free ‘home away from home’ accommodation
and support for families with children in hospital.
After several years of planning, fundraising and development, we were still able to open our new
Oxford House last summer. This means that our service in has expanded from 17 bedrooms in the
previous site to 62, in the new Ronald McDonald House. We will now be able to support even more
families with children receiving treatment in John Radcliffe Hospital, and extend to families with babies
and children in Critical Care or Newborn Intensive Care.
We look towards the rest of this year with hope. We’re excited to be opening a 12th Ronald McDonald
House in spring, located in the new children’s hospital in Edinburgh. It will have 25 en suite bedrooms,
along with a playroom, kitchens, dining area, lounges and laundry facilities. We wouldn’t be able to do
this without your help and support over the last year. Thank you.
There are many more hospitals and thousands more families who need us. That’s why our need for
your continued support remains as high as ever.
On behalf of all the families we have looked after in 2020, the most difficult of years, thank you.
And on behalf of the thousands more families we shall support over the coming years, please donate
what you can tonight, because every penny you can give will make a huge difference.

Recycling Happy Meal
                 toys was child’s play
                 When McDonald’s stopped putting non-sustainable
hard plastic toys into Happy Meals, they asked Veolia
for assistance with 300 pallets of unused toys they
                 couldn’t recycle.
                 WE MADE THE IMPOSSIBLE, POSSIBLE.
Using our PROCYCLE service, we extracted all the hard-to
recycle materials and shredded the plastic, which will be
used to create 17 playhouses for RMHC UK’s gardens for
                 sick children this year.
A great example of our circular solutions giving
McDonald’s waste a happy new beginning.

HOUSE EDINBURGH
is opening this spring!
We are thrilled to announce that the new Ronald McDonald House
Edinburgh will be opening this spring. This 25 bedroom House
will provide free ‘home away from home’ accommodation for the
families of children being treated at the new Royal Hospital for
Children and Young People.
Ronald McDonald House Edinburgh will be our twelfth House in the
UK and is based within the Royal Hospital for Children and Young
People on the top floor of the building, so that families can stay
close to their child in hospital.
Ronald McDonald House Charities UK has been generously
supported by McDonald’s customers and restaurant owners in
Scotland in the planning for this new House. In 2014, the Scottish
Government introduced a 5p paper bag tax across the country,
which McDonald’s and its Scottish Franchisees chose to donate to
the Charity, amounting to over £3.9 million. 100% of the bag tax
donations have gone towards building and running this brand new
Ronald McDonald House in Scotland’s capital city.
