Shepherding Sunday
To some contemporary Christians, the image of Christ as
shepherd appears outdated. Perhaps we don't want to think of
ourselves as "sheep." Yet the image remains popular and we all
feel attracted by the tender words of the famous psalm that is
used today. There is a comfort and security in knowing as sheep
we share a shepherd who is defined as being one who cares.
Perhaps this is what we miss in our times.
I remember as child in Southern Germany how satisfying the
rolling hills with the sheep in the distance were. And later as an
adult walking over the rugged hills of Greece with sheep
grazing on the grass between the rocks, it was this sight that
   seemed to capture the imagination.
Perhaps it is that we yearn for guidance, protection, and
strength in a world filled with much chaos, violence, and
   fast-paced change.
The liturgy today offers the image of our God as shepherd and we as the sheep that can not
be taken from the shepherd's hand. Secure in the one who guides us–not out of this world, but
in and through it with staff and overflowing cup, with word and holy meal. The Good Shep-
herd is the Christ who lived with us and is present, just like when I see those sheep on the
rugged Greek coast: never far away is the shepherd who watches that none of us tourists dis-
turb the life of the flock. We have security in being the sheep under the care of the shepherd.
Shepherding is all about a community of people and their leaders. Jesus uses the image
and declares he will stick with the people in contrast to false shepherds who want to be
leaders without a cross, without self-giving, without love. Any relation to politics?
But today celebrates that in the presence of our struggle for green pastures, the pre-
sence of Christ leads us to a more abundant vision of life. Once again, that's Easter!
                                                                                                                                 –from Pr Eric Dyck

Erste Lesung First Reading
Apostelgeschichte 2, 42-47 Acts 2: 42-47
Today's reading is a description of life in the community following Peter's sermon on the day of
Pentecost, when the Spirit was outpoured on God's people. This new community is founded on the
teachings of the apostles and sustained in Christ’s presence, made real in the breaking of the bread.

They (the Christians) devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the
breaking of bread and the prayers. Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and
signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things
in common; 45 they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to
all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they
broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and
having the goodwill of all the people.
And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

In response to the reading:
Psalm 23 Cantor: Tim Wilfong, pre-recorded

I shall not | be in want.

2 The LORD makes me lie down | in green pastures

Zweite Lesung (auf deutsch / in German) Second Reading
1 Petrus 2, 19-25 1 Peter 2: 19-25
Doing the right things does not guarantee that one will not experience difficulties, hardships, rejec-
tion, or even suffering. Here Christ is presented as the model for our path of endurance and loyalty to
God, particularly in the midst of adversity.

Read in German For it is a credit to you if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suf-
fering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, what credit is that?
But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God's approval.
For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example,
so that you should follow in his steps.
"He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth."
When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but
he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on
the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have
       been healed.
For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guar-
   dian of your souls.

HEILIGES EVANGELIUM (auf englisch / in English) HOLY GOSPEL
                                            Gospel: John 10: 1-10
Jesus uses an image familiar to the people of his day regarding spiritual leadership. Good shepherds
bring people to life through Jesus, but those who avoid Jesus are dangerous to the flock.

Jesus said, "Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but
climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the
shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his
voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him be-
cause they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him be-
cause they do not know the voice of strangers."
Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was
  saying to them.
So again Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who
came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the
gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.
I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
