Signature Anti-Wrinkle Treatment FAQ

Thank you for choosing to have treatment with Dr Edel
Woods. Your education, safety and results are of paramount
importance to Dr Edel. You should only ever have treatment
with an appropriately qualified medical practitioner and only
after you have satisfied yourself of the procedure, the likely
outcomes, the limitations and the risks. For this reason Dr
Edel completes a thorough consultation with each patient
ahead of treatment. Please read the following carefully and if
you have any questions Dr Edel will be more than happy to
discuss them with you during your consultation.

What is Botox ® and how does it work?

Botox® is the trade name for a prescription medicine (Botulinum Toxin A)
which is used in cosmetic medicine to create a fresher and more youthful
appearance by temporarily relaxing facial muscles. It works by blocking nerve

impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces the muscle activity that causes
moderate to severe lines to form.

It is primarily used to treat:

   • Worry Lines: by relaxing the muscles that create the horizontal lines on
       the forehead
   • Frown Lines: by relaxing the muscles that create the vertical lines
       between the eyes
   • Crows Feet: by relaxing the muscles that create the lines at the lateral
       aspect of the eyes
   • Bunny Lines: by relaxing the muscles that create the lines on the lateral
       aspect of the nose

Are there different types of Botox ®?

No there is only one Botox ® however there are different types of Botulinum
Toxin A available on the market. Other brands of Botulinum Toxin A that you
may have heard of include (eg Dysport - Azzalure and Xeomin -Bocouture).
They are NOT the same thing as BOTOX®, and should not be called so. Dr Edel
Woods only uses branded Allergan Botox.

What’s different about Allergan Botox ®?

Allergan is a major global brand with over 25 years of manufacturing
experience and over 61 million vials of Allergan’s targeted Botulinum Toxin A
have been distributed worldwide. What does that mean or you? Well it means
that your product is being manufactured by a company with a long and proven
track record and with over 12 years of safety and efficiency data.

Allergan Botox ® also has a unique targeted mechanism meaning that there is
minimal toxin movement from the injection point which is why using Allergan
Botox ® results in predictable results.

And lastly a very important consideration is the testing of Allergan Botox ®. The
good news is that Allergan do not test their toxin on animals.

Who may not be suitable for Botox ®?

• Pregnant nor trying to get pregnant
• Breast Feeding
• Neuromuscular disorder (EG: Myasthenia Gravis/Eaton Lambert
   Syndrome/Multiple Sclerosis/Parkinsons/Epilepsy)
• Infection including acne at the site of injection
• Presence of cold sores anywhere on the face
• History of Bells Palsy
• Allergy to Botulinum Toxin or Albumin (egg)
• Bleeding disorders or anticoagulant treatment (Warfarin etc)
• If you have a coldsore on the appointment day or if you have had a coldsore
in the 10 days leading up to your treatment appointment

Should any of the above apply to you please contact Dr Edel Woods at:

What should I not do before my Botox ® appointment?

It is important that you avoid the following in advance of your scheduled
appointment:

Copyright © 2018 Dr Edel Woods, Bespoke Facial Aesthetics
• NO ALCOHOL (24 hours). Alcohol in the 24 hours pre appointment
increases the risk of bleeding which in turn increases the risk of bruising.
   • NO SUNBEDS/ EXTREME HEAT (2 weeks). Extreme heat can increase the
risk of inflammation after procedure and delay the healing.
   • No MICRONEEDLING/PEELS/ACTIVE FACIALS (2 weeks). These
treatments work by creating some inflammation which can negatively
       affect your Botox ®
   • If possible AVOID WEARING MAKE UP to your appointment. If you do
wear make-up we will remove it but it is best not to wear it as there are
some studies that show that the process of removing makeup can cause
micro-tears in the skin which can increase the risk of post-treatment
       infection.
   • Do not take fish oils (omegas etc) or Vitamin E for 10 days prior to your
       appointment to minimise bruising

What can I not do after my Botox ® appointment?

• No lying down (4 hours) This is to avoid pressure in the area and avoid the
risk of increased blood flow that might cause Botox ® to be dispersed and
   therefore not last as long
• No make-up or touch the treated area (24hours minimum). Risk of infection
and movement of the Botox ® which can cause it to penetrate unintended
   muscles with undesirable results.
• No alcohol (24 hours) Alcohol can increase the blood flow which can cause
the Botox ® to be dispersed and therefore not last as long
• No vigorous exercise (48 hours) Heat can increase the blood flow which can
cause the Botox ® to be dispersed and therefore not last as long

• No Sunbeds (2 weeks) Heat can increase the blood flow which can cause
the Botox ® to be dispersed and therefore not last as long
• Avoid extreme heat/cold (including sauna/steam rooms etc (2 weeks)
• Minimal intense sun exposure (2 weeks)
• No microneedling/skin peels/active facials (2 weeks)

Does getting Botox ® hurt?

Dr Edel Woods uses very tiny injection needles to administer Botox ® precisely
and as painlessly as possible. You will feel small pinpricks during the procedure.
Dr Edel also uses different needles for each area to ensure the needle does not
blunt. A blunt needle can increase pain. Pain perception can also be
heightened around the time of your menstruation so it is a good idea to bear
this in mind when booking appointments.

When will I start to see results?

Initial results are typically seen after 1 week but final results are not seen until
2 weeks post treatment. This is also the time when I offer all patients a review
to evaluate the results.

How long do the results last?

The effects of Botox are temporary and how long it will last depends on the
patient. For most people the results last between 3-4 months however runners
or people who train a lot tend to metabolise Botox ® at a faster rate. Though
all patients respond differently; for everyone the muscle action gradually
returns and the lines and wrinkles begin to re-appear. The good news is that
with repeated doses the lines and wrinkles often appear less severe because
the muscles being treated are being trained to relax.

How often should I have Botox ®?

In the first year of treatment or where the lines were particularly deep it is
recommended that you have Botox ® every 4 months. Some studies show that
with time regular patients can reduce the number of treatments needed to
every 6months. This is because for many people the muscles are being trained
to relax.

If I start having Botox ® will I have to keep having it done?

Of course but the vast majority of patients love the results so much that they
couldn’t imagine going back to their pre-Botox ® days!

Can Botox ® be reversed?

No, Botox ® cannot be reversed but it does wear off. It typically lasts 3-4
months but it can last up to 6 months for some patients.

What are the risks of having Botox ®?

Botox ® is a medical procedure and should only be administered by
appropriately trained medical professionals. Botox® is an extremely safe
procedure with a safety record spanning 20 years. Nonetheless, it is still
important to remember that because it is a medical procedure there are risks
and potential side effects.

   • Any time that the skin is pierced with a needle – you risk infection,
swelling and bruising, even if it’s only a minor risk. It is advisable not to
wear makeup or touch the treated area for 24 hours after treatment.
   • Headache. Up to 10% of patients can experience a headache. Some
patients have described it as a feeling of heaviness in the forehead
region in the first week of treatment. This usually resolves within 14
       days.

• Eyebrow or eyelid ptosis. These are the most undesirable side effects.
This is where either the eyelid or eyebrow visibly drops. The feeling of
heaviness around the eyes is normal and this is NOT a ptosis. This is
simply how it feels when a muscle is relaxed! True ptoses are reported
to occur in approximately 3% of cases and can be due to regional
anatomical variation, injector technique, poor compliance with post-
operative advice or a combination of factors. If you have had a ptosis
previously then you are more likely to have it occur again. Most ptoses
resolve within 6 weeks. They are NEVER permanent.
   • Double vision. This is rare but it can occur.

Is there any downtime after Botox ® treatment?

You will have small red, raised bumps at the injection sites. These usually
resolve within 30-40 minutes. You cannot wear make-up or touch your face for
24 hours post treatment.

Will I look frozen?

Dr Edel Woods mainly administers Botox® in the upper third of the face. The
injections temporarily relax the treated muscles to allow any wrinkles caused
by the constant movement of these muscles to gradually soften after
treatment. The overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled while the
untreated facial muscles continue to work normally so facial expression is
unaffected by the treatment. Patients look the same as they always have done,
only more youthful and rested. It is very important that to avoid the ‘frozen’
look that we start with the smallest effective dose. This is a signature of
treatment with Dr Edel Woods. All of her patients are then offered a review
where results can be tweaked if needed. This is the most reliable and effective
way of achieving subtle beautiful results.

Is it true that Botox ® only works when you are a certain age?

Whilst it is true that the more elastic the skin, the better the treatment will
work – Botox® can usually be utilised to smooth wrinkles from around 20 to 60
years of age. It works best in patients who have lines caused by muscle pull
(and preferably before the lines have become too deep), as opposed to
wrinkles caused largely by excess loose skin and/ or sun damage. An individual
consultation with Dr Edel Woods is the best way of ascertaining whether the
treatment is suitable and beneficial for you as an individual patient.

Does Botox ® prevent wrinkles?

Yes, Botox ® helps prevent the formation of new dynamic lines and stops
dynamic lines that have already been formed from deepening. The rationale
for starting Botox early is the prevention of the permanent development of
deep wrinkles or lines.

The average woman begins to show signs of facial aging around the age of 25.
The first signs of aging in women are new lines around the eyes (crow’s feet)
and around the mouth, as well the “elevens” – the frown lines between the
eyebrows. Women tend to show the first signs of aging younger than men
because a women’s facial skin is thinner. Men have thicker skin and an
increased blood supply to the skin of the face. For this reason men tend to
start using Botox® later in life; around their mid-thirties.

As Botox® can have a preventative effect, it’s best not to wait until your
wrinkles or lines are deeply etched on the face and then expect an overnight
miracle!

If you are unsure as to whether Botox ® is for you make an appointment for a
consultation and Dr Edel Woods will be delighted to go through the treatment
options with you.

How much does it cost?

Consultation with Dr Edel Woods is €45. If you go ahead with treatment within
1 month of consultation the full consultation fee is deducted from the price of
your treatment. Anti-Wrinkle Injections start at €210 for one area. €290 for 2
areas and €370 for 3 areas. Follow up appointment within 21 days of
treatment is free.

There are many people offering aesthetic treatments but don’t be fooled into
thinking cheap is best. If the price seems low, ask yourself why? Are they using
an inferior product? Is the injector not fully qualified or experienced in the
procedure? No reputable and competent injector will undersell themselves,
ever. You generally get what you pay for and great aesthetic medicine results
are a product of excellent training, an artistic eye and good product choice.

Can I have my treatment and consultation on the same day?

Of course, this is entirely up to you. Many patients like to have treatment and
consultation on the same day! We have booking options that allow you to
book Consultation + Treatment. By choosing this option it ensures that we will
have the time to do both a full consultation and the treatment so as to avoid
disappointment.

I had Botox recently, but I still have lines on my face?

Firstly, it is very important to remember that every face is different. How your
muscles react to treatment, how deep your lines were pre -treatment and
whether or not the lines were caused by dynamic movement all influence the
outcome. Dr Edel Woods likes to build up long-term relationships with her
patients where, with time, she know exactly what your unique muscles need.
She also can assist and guide you in formulating an appropriate skin treatment
plan, through referral and advice.

The most important thing to remember is that static lines are not improved
with Botox ®. This is because Botox ® works on the muscle so only the lines
created by muscle movement can be treated with Botox ®. Static lines are for
lines created for example; by sun-damage or excess skin.

Another important thing to remember is that where dynamic lines were
particularly deep it is possible to see an imprint of these lines post-treatment.
This is because the skin in this area is photo-damaged. You will need to
combine regular Botox ® treatments every 3-4 months with an excellent skin
care routine to eliminate these lines. These lines took time to form and they
will take time to eliminate!

What is your policy in regards to top-ups?

All of Dr Edel Woods’ patients are offered a review appointment within 3
weeks of your treatment. It is rarely required but where necessary Dr Edel
Woods will top up your treatment. A top-up is only offered within a strict time
period. No top-ups will be performed more than 3 weeks (21 days) post
treatment. If you feel you need a top-up, it is your responsibility to make time
to attend your scheduled review. To waiver on this issue, means you have a
higher risk of developing an immunity to Botox ®years in the future and for this

reason it is not a risk worth taking! We hope this helps, but do feel free to mail
us with any queries at hello@dredelwoods.com We are delighted to help in
any way we can. Aesthetics is our passion and we are delighted to share our
knowledge and know-how with you.

Is there anything else I should do alongside Botox ® to help me to look my
best?

Yes!

   • W A T E R: Our mantra is: 2Litres before 2pm.
   • S M O K I N G: Smoking is known to cause premature wrinkles. How? The
nicotine in cigarettes causes the narrowing of blood vessels in the
outermost layers of your skin. This impairs blood flow to your skin. With
less blood flow, your skin doesn’t get as much oxygen and nutrients such
as vitamin A. Also, many of the over 4000 chemicals in tobacco smoke
also damage collagen and elastin which are the fibers that give your skin
its strength and elasticity. As a result, skin begins to sag and wrinkle
prematurely. And last but not least, the repeated exposure to heat from
burning cigarettes and the facial expressions you make when smoking –
such as pursing your lips when inhaling and squinting your eyes to keep
smoke out – may contribute to wrinkles.
   • D I E T: Eating a diet rich in fruit & vegetables is important for skin
health. Fresh fruits & vegetables are a great source of the vitamins your
skin needs such as vitamin A and Vitamin C. Some studies also show that
Flaxseed oil which is a rich source of alpha-linolenic -acid can help in the
        prevention of wrinkles.
   • S K I N C A R E: Invest in a good skincare routine. I can advise on
appropriate skincare specialists to discuss your skincare needs with

• S L E E P: Sleep is vital for our bodies to repair. Without sleep you
cortisol level increases which in turn decreases cell turnover and speeds
       up the ageing process.
