Orientation to 2nd Year Practical Nursing
 Fall semester: You will attend clinical (PNR 316) two days a week either Monday
Tuesday or Thursday Friday. Your clinical will take place on a medical/surgical at Windsor
Regional Hospital. (Metropolitan or Ouellette campus) You will rotate through 12 x 8 hour
shifts, 3 x 4hr simulation lab days and an 8 hour orientation. You will have a week off of
clinical at four different points throughout the semester.

*Please note that your schedule does not accurately capture this*. Your schedule will
be communicated on BB prior to orientation. Common Test time will be Wednesdays
1700- 1900. Please do not book any work hours during this time. Conflict due to work
or vacation will not be accommodated.

 Winter semester: You will attend clinical (PNR 411) two days a week (16 hours). You will
rotate through both a medical/surgical unit and a mental health unit. You will also have two
    weeks of lab orientation.

 All students are expected to be available for days (0600-1500) and afternoon
    shifts (1400-2300) for clinical.

 Spring semester: You will attend a comprehensive consolidation in the hospital and or
community LTC setting. This rotation will enable you to consolidate your skills and
knowledge for a 10-week period. Students are divided into 3 groupings for this
consolidation, and may find that they are attending clinical the first and second 5 week
periods; the first and third 5 week periods; or, the second and third 5 week periods of the
15 week spring semester, depending on your grouping. Students are expected to be
available for all dates during this semester including weekends and holidays. Please
do not plan vacations for this time period.

 Students may be scheduled for 8 hour days, afternoons and midnight shifts as well as 12
    hour day shifts
(06:30- 18:30). Students are strongly encouraged not to work during this consolidation
    experience. Please plan accordingly!

*Note: the schedule on the student self-service may NOT BE CORRECT with respect to your
classes, the day of your clinical experience, lab and your instructor. Your schedule MAY
CHANGE. This is due to part-time students still enrolling – therefore clinical groups may be
expanded or condensed. As soon as schedules are finalized, we will notify you via Blackboard
announcements.

Blackboard: Due to batch enrollments on Blackboard our clinical course PNR 316 may not be
available until sometime in August.

Please review the document “Windsor Clinical Clearance Information Returning Students” on this
website for information regarding your clinical clearance. Clinical clearance is mandatory to attend the
clinical practice sites. Clinical clearance involves both medical and non-medical requirements that are
clearly outlined in this document. Please read it thoroughly and follow the instructions to obtain your
clearance. The dates to obtain your clearance are on this document. You will need to complete all your
clearance requirements prior to this appointment date. Dates are from Monday, July 30th to Friday,

skin test with evidence of a recent negative result. The Passport to Health must be obtained from a nurse
at our Health Centre. If you require a TB test please call ext 4484 to set up an appointment with the
health nurse. In addition to the admission clinical clearance, students will be required to obtain an
influenza immunization when they become available, usually in the late fall. The cost of all
immunizations and non-medical requirements are the student’s responsibility. These clinical pre-
placement requirements have been developed under the guidelines of the Ontario Hospital Association
(OHA), Canada’s Immunization Guide and the Ontario Medical Association (OMA).

arrange for rides for “exactly 3 pm”. It is best to call for a ride once your clinical day is over.

 During this experience, students will be caring for clients with acute and chronic health
conditions in hospital. Clinical groups are comprised of approximately 8 students with one
        instructor.

 Your clinical day will be Monday/Tuesday or Thursday/Friday. We cannot accept requests
for specific days for clinical nor specific groups or clinical placements.

weekly assignment may take anywhere from 2-4 hours to complete. Students are expected to
have a completed worksheet in order to provide safe patient care. Incomplete worksheets
represent a safety issue in the clinical setting.

                                                                                                              7

Lab

 New skills are taught and demonstrated during orientation. Students will have the opportunity to
schedule time in the lab to practice each week with the lab technologists in order to gain
experience and confidence with their new skill for the week.
 Once a skill has been taught in lab, it is expected that the student will perform the skill in a safe,
competent and knowledgeable manner in the hospital with clients. When you are with a client in
the clinical setting, is not the time to practice. Practicing should take place in the lab in a
    controlled, safe environment.
                                                                                                             8
 We have excellent peer tutors available to assist you in the lab. They can assist with
documentation, skills, theory courses or any other area you are experiencing difficulty in. There
is no charge for the peer tutoring service. Just stop by the desk in the nursing lab on the 2nd floor
of the Center for Applied Health Sciences to arrange an appointment.
 Review your basic assessment skills prior to the start of the clinical/lab orientation especially
blood pressure measurement, pulse, etc.  The nursing lab is open throughout the summer if
you wish to make an appointment to practice before September.
 As part of your lab fee, students will receive a lab kit in September, which will include most of
the necessary supplies for your labs for the academic year. Should students wish to purchase
extra supplies for practice, they may do so from Motion Specialties on Tecumseh Road East
(bring your SCC ID badge for a discount).

    your request.

SCHEDULING/GENERAL ELECTIVES
Student schedules will be available for download on the student self-serve site prior to the start of the
fall semester. The clinical schedules that will be on your schedule will not be accurate. Please refer to
Blackboard in mid-August for an accurate clinical schedule. All nursing core courses are scheduled
for you, however; you will need to register for a general elective course of your choosing that fits
within your schedule, instructions are available at:
http://www.stclaircollege.ca/stclairspace/docs/elective.pdf

“Can I apply for advanced standing?”
If you would like to discuss advanced standing for a previously completed course (with a minimum
grade of 60 %), you can book an appointment to meet with the year I coordinator. Please bring a
copy of your transcript and course outline.
You will continue to attend the class as scheduled until you have been notified by the Registrar’s
office in writing that you have been granted advanced standing.

                                                                                                            9

Medication Administration Tests and Theory Tests

Your first math test is scheduled for Tuesday September 4th from 1700-1800.

 This semester, you will have a math test. In order to pass the test, you will need to achieve
85%. You will have three chances to achieve the 85%.
 If a student does not achieve 85% you will be assigned a grade of “Unsatisfactory” in PNR
316 and will not be allowed to continue in the program.
 Students are not permitted to give medications in the clinical area until 85% is achieved
on the medication test, In order to pass clinical, the student must demonstrate safe
medication administration, therefore repeated attempts at passing the math test may put
you in jeopardy of not meeting the clinical competency to receive a passing grade for
        PNR 316.
 Non-programmable calculators are permitted. You are not permitted to use a cellphone or
        share a calculator
 Medication Administration Tests will be scheduled outside of your regular clinical and lab
times. You will be notified of the dates and times during orientation in July. Work and/or
vacation are NOT valid reasons to miss a Medication Administration test. If you miss the test
you will be given a “0” on the test.
 MANDATORY remediation will be required for students who are unsuccessful on the
medication administration test. Remediation will take place with nursing lab technologists.
Due to the large class size, we are unable to allow students to write at a different time or date
