Rotary meetings for 1st 2 Tuesdays of the month will be Dinner meetings at 6.30 pm and next 2 Tuesdays will be Lunch
meetings at 12.45pm at SCC, Gilmour Room
2019 PETS and DISTAS
The 2019 Presidents-Elect Training Seminar (PETS) and District Training Assembly was held at the KSL Resort, Johor
Bahru from 21-24th April 2019. PE Anoop and President Brian attended the PETS. For the 2019 DISTAS, RCRC was
represented by President Brian, PE Anoop, PP Jeffrey Chan, PP Percy Jeyapal, Tengku Indra, Judy and Percy’s spouse
Maureen. It was the largest turnout for RCRC at a District event in a very long time.
As with previous PETS, this year’s PETS helps prepare incoming Club Presidents for holding this office. It familiarises
them with Rotary principles and processes. It also introduces and explains the Rotary Presidential theme for the
coming Rotary Year, which is “Rotary Connects the World”. 67 Pesidents participated in this year’s PETS.
This year’s DISTAS was attended by 308 Rotarians and 57 spouses. The Governor’s Banquet was attended by 430
Rotarians, spouses and guests.
The DISTAS began with a welcome dinner featuring Malaysian hawker food. It was a vibrant affair with great
fellowship, excellent food, wonderful music from the 60s and 70s and much dancing. The Opening Ceremony was
held prior to the commencement of the dinner with the traditional parade of flags, singing of the national anthems
of Brunei, Malaysia and Singapore, and the roll call of clubs.
The plenary session of the DISTAS held the next day feature a video message from RI President 2019-20 Mark
Maloney. Mark emphasised the importance of connections to achieve the objects of Rotary. This was followed by
speeches from DG Henry Tan and DGE Jeff Yong.
The Keynote Speaker for this year’s DISTAS was our member Tengku Indra who spoke about Rotary Leadership.
Those present thoroughly enjoyed his interactive presentation. He was followed by another speaker from RCRC, PP
Jeffrey Chan who spoke in his capacity as the District Community Relationship Chair. PP Jeffrey provided much
useful Rotary information in his speech and also made suggestions as to how the relationship between Rotary
Clubs, Rotarians and their communities can be furthered. Both speakers from RCRC were very well received.
The rest of the plenary session which was after the break was devoted to Rotary Global Grants. In the afternoon,
the DISTAS broke into breakout groups for specific training for Secretaries-elect; Treasurers-elect; Sergeant-at-Arms
and Youth Service committees. The plenary resumed at 4.30 pm for the closing ceremony with the usual District
Resolutions and the closing speech by DGE Jeff Yong.
The Governor’s Banquet was the signature event of this DISTAS as it was at this event that the incoming DG Jeff
Yong was formally installed. Jeff Yong is the first District 3310 DG from Brunei Darussalam. That evening was also
www.rotaryclubrafflescity.org the Graduation Ceremony for the newly trained PEs. Our PE Anoop received his certificate and the Presidential theme banner for 2019-20 at this event. The Assembly then, as usual, adjourned to the House of Friendship where the merry making through Rotary Fellowship, drink (lots of it) and karaoke continued till past 3 a.m. Those present at this DISTAS expressed our profuse thanks to the host club, R C Pasir Gudang and its very hardworking chairman Kian Hwee. Now all sights are on the next District event, viz the District Conference in Penang from 26-28 April, and the fellowship and merry-making that can be expected there.
