Director’s Notes
Hello and Welcome to our little Mediterranean Island! We
hope your stay at the Taverna is pleasant and that you enjoy
some time by the jetty. Tonight, we hope you take a moment
to enjoy the fun, laughter, and joy that you’ll see on stage!
MAMMA MIA! is a romantic comedy, contrasting the
dreams and aspirations of a 70’s girl and a 90’s girl. Through
the story-telling magic of the songs of ABBA, we meet
                       Donna, a feisty, independent single-parent, who doesn’t
need a man to make her life complete; and her twenty-year old daughter Sophie,
who wants romance, babies, and a big, white wedding. If only her father could give
her away….If only her mother could tell her who her father is….
When looking at shows for this year, this one stuck out strongly to me as I did just
have a wedding for myself and the bond between Sophie and Donna reminds me of
my relationship with my own mother. Although many times a Daughter doesn’t quite
do what their Mother wants them to, in the end they come to an understanding and
help each other grow through their good and difficult moments. This show teaches
us that the bond between a Mother and a Daughter can never be broken, even
when they may be worlds apart. Your dreams and aspirations should be what you
need and want for your life, even if you feel you’re too old to restart or too young to
begin. I have been overjoyed to work on this production with this group of students
in Memorial Theatre. Their dedication, work ethic, and strength has shown through
in each music, dance, and blocking rehearsal. We’ve only had under 80 hours of
rehearsal to put together what you see before you, but my word -- isn’t it fantastic!
This year, we introduced our Student Production Team, a group of designers,
directors and dance captains, all students. We have been so grateful to work with
this team of students, creating a stronger and more well rounded production, seeing
every detail through down to the last disco sequin. Working together with these
actors and technicians over the last few months has been the most rewarding and
joyful experience yet in Memorial Theatre! We hope you’ll enjoy the world we’ve
created both on stage and off for you this evening.
The last thing I’d like to say about this production is this: Memories. Good days, bad
days. They’ll be with me always. In those old familiar rooms, children would play.
Knowing me, knowing you was the best I could do. Thank you for the music, the
songs I’m singing. Thanks for all the joy they’re bringing. Who can live without it? I
ask in all honesty, What would life be without a song or dance, what are we? So I
say thank you for the music, for giving it to me. Enjoy the show!
