Thursday 21 January 2021
This morning we start our journey to Invercargill via the Catlins. The Catlins are ecologically unique and still
relatively untouched by the large commercial tourist ventures enabling a more low-key nature focussed
experience. Native coastal bush and forest, waterways, beaches, birds and sealife combine with the coast’s
temperamental weather to make your visit a memorable one. We start our journey by turning off to
Brighton and driving the Taieri Mouth coastal road. With hardly any other traffic and right next to the
ocean, there are surf spots, beaches and the small fishing village of Taieri Mouth itself to take in. We then
head inland over the hills to rejoin SH1 south to Balclutha, where we will make a coffee stop. Our next stop
is the Nugget Point Lighthouse for views of the coast and possible wildlife sightings. There is a nearby
penguin viewing area, while seals and sea lions reside in the area and there are a variety of coastal birds.
We then carry on to Owaka for lunch and check out Graham Renwick’s quirky collection Teapot Land,
started 10 years ago with just a couple of teapots and which now cover his front garden. Time permitting
you may like to check out the Owaka Museum, developed to preserve and to exhibit the heritage of the
Catlins region. After lunch we will make a stop at Cannibal Bay, with its white sand and blue/green water
and where Sea Lions are commonly seen. We then make our way to our motel for the night. One night
Kaka Point Motel (Studio Unit). Tonight enjoy a 2 course dinner at The Point Café and Bar

garden, nursery, aviary, woodland and wetland set in the rolling green countryside and home to a large
population of native and exotic birds including handreared parrots and waterfowl. Enjoy a walk around the
gardens before carrying onto Invercargill. Two nights Ascot Park Hotel (Superior Rooms). Tonight enjoy a 2
