word, Aldo Leopold was studying and journaling about it. Born in Iowa
in 1887, Leopold was a conservationist, forester, philosopher, educator,
writer, and outdoor enthusiast and was considered by many to be the
The “Father of Wildlife Ecology”
“Father of Wildlife Ecology” in the United States.
By age 24, Leopold had been promoted to the post of supervisor for the
Carson National Forest in New Mexico. In 1924, the Gila National
Forest became the country's first official wilderness area, thanks in large
part to Leopold's work on a proposal to manage it as such. By 1933,
Leopold published the first textbook in the field of wildlife management.
In 1935, he and his family initiated an ecological restoration experiment on an old farm in Baraboo,
Wisconsin. They planted thousands of pine trees to restore prairies, and documented the changes
in flora and fauna. Leopold's collection of essays, "A Sand County Almanac," was published
posthumously in 1949 and has gone on to sell more than 2 million copies. In it, Leopold's essay
on the land ethic proposed a moral responsibility to the natural world.
Today, Leopold's legacy is celebrated with Aldo Leopold Week & Weekend, held March 1-9; the
first full weekend in March is Aldo Leopold Weekend in Wisconsin and the first full week of March
is designated as Leopold Week in Iowa. Organizers say communities come together "to demonstrate
their individual and combined commitment to the 'Land Ethic' put forth by Leopold in this book.
The events include outdoor activities, readings and a public screening of an Emmy award-winning
documentary on Leopold's life.
Health
Corner
Every day your kidneys go about their work of removing excess fluid and waste from your blood. You probably
never think about them. But you should. In addition to filtering waste, the kidneys have several important
jobs to do. Consider this: They produce the two hormones needed to make red blood cells and regulate blood
pressure, and they produce the active form of vitamin D, which helps maintain calcium for bones and other
body functions.
Each kidney has millions of tiny nephrons that act as filters. Beginning about age 40, a natural loss of
nephrons occurs, but because there are so many, that doesn't cause problems unless other factors are present.
If you have high blood pressure, diabetes, or both, some nephrons will lose their ability to filter blood.
In addition to controlling diabetes and blood pressure, consider the following to protect your kidneys:
▪ Get treatment for strep throat. When streptococcus invades the kidneys of adults, it can lead to kidney
problems and kidney failure in some cases.
▪ Know what's in "natural herb supplements." Some substances can work like prescription drugs. Patients
taking blood thinners should know that garlic, ginger, Ginkgo biloba, and ginseng all contain natural
anticoagulants. They could be problematic for people taking blood thinners.
▪ Some painkillers may harm the kidneys. If you regularly take over-the-counter painkillers, especially
for a long period of time, you may want to ask you doctor for a kidney function test.
Always consult your physician prior to starting or stopping any treatment or with any other health concerns.Enhanced Management Team

2pmDear Resident, Families, Friends and Staff, I don't know about you, but I am pretty excited to see March here, that means Spring is right around the corner. We have been enjoying some nice weather the last couple of weeks which makes me ready for Spring to be here. I know we need some more rain, but may be just a little more. I look forward to waking up to the bright blue skies and the sun shining all day long. March 1st is a very special day to me. It's the day I celebrate my anniversary with Carlton Senior Living. This March I will be celebrating 15 years as the Executive Director in Sacramento. Upon my reflection of my time spent with Carlton Senior Living, I am reminded how truly fortunate I am to spend my days at this community. I have the wonderful privilege to come to work every day with some of the best staff in the business. Where would we be without them? I wouldn't even want to try. And in turn, what good is exceptional staff, without exceptional resi- dents to care for. I have said it before, and I will say it again, we have awesome resi- dents. I remain in awe of our residents every day. They are very giving, and excepting of new residents. They want fulfilling lives and I see them living their lives to the fullest. How lucky are we the staff, that we get to spend our time with the residents every day. We get to hear some of the most wonderful stories about their lives and loves. Most importantly, we get enrich their lives with our care and love. I’m always impressed with the community’s vibrancy. It’s a pleasure to see residents enjoying themselves in different activities, making new friends, and happy to be living here. I believe we have the best residents in town. I’m always greeted with a warm smile, and when I’m lucky I get a hug too. I can’t help but admire our resident’s zest for life. I am blessed to call Carlton Senior Living my home away from home. I’m truly honored to be part of the Carlton family. As the Executive Director, I’m here to serve you, so you’ll find my door is open to residents, families, visitors, and staff. Please come by for a visit. If we haven't met I would love to meet you. Enjoy the spring weather, enjoy our fabulous staff, and most important, Live Your Life! Lisa Schumann Executive Director

Bariatric Sleeve Surgery
First I would like to thank you all for being patient while I was away for an entire month and all
of your support as I was trying to qualify for the procedure by losing 32 pounds. This has been one
of the hardest things that I have ever done.
I came to this decision because I had been trying to lose weight on my own for years and only
managed to gain more weight. I want to be healthy and active for my kids. This was not an easy
choice and I was so afraid, but I knew that it would be for the best.
So, What Happened?
My surgery was bright and early, 8am, on Monday, February 3rd. Having an 8am surgery time
means that I had to be at the hospital by 5:45am and be awake at 3am to complete special
pre-surgery procedures. I opted for the sleeve procedure, simply, they removed the majority of my
stomach and it is now about the size of an egg and is no longer referred to as a stomach, but a
“pouch”.
What Has Changed Since My Surgery?
** I have lost 29 pounds
** I am no longer on High Blood Pressure Medicines -
My blood pressure normalized during the first week after surgery
** My resting heart rate was 93 and is now 69
** My knees no longer hurt
** My fingers are too small for my ring
** I had to tighten my belt by a few notches
** I now weigh what I did in 2005 - before I had my children
And it has only been a month. I am so excited, my children and I have a few things planned for this
year already. We are set for our Arizona vacation in April, going White Water Rafting in August
to celebrate our birthdays and we are already paid up to run the Rugged maniac Mud Run in
October. I look forward to my life changing for the better and am glad to be able to share this
journey with all of you.Preventative Exercise vs. Restorative Exercise
By age 65, people who haven’t engaged in regular exercise may incur a decrease
in their physical muscular strength level by as much as 80%. Muscle strengthening
and balance exercises can reduce the risk of falls up to 45%. Live 2 B Healthy’s
preventative exercise programs focus on improving strength, balance, and mobility.
Remaining physically active in exercise before an injury or illness occurs, greatly
reduces the chance of needing physical therapy or restorative exercise programs
later to recover from an injury or fall. Functional decline in seniors is often the result
of a sedentary lifestyle, rather than the effects of the normal aging process.
According to the U.S. Department of Aging, fitness programs can be
effectively used to achieve the following goals for seniors:
● Lessen the degree of disability for
seniors as they age
● Increase muscular strength and
endurance which deteriorates
through inactivity
● Improve joint flexibility and range
of motion by keeping them loose
and flexible
● Strengthen bone mass which is
weakened in later stage by osteo-
porosis
There is always one consistent finding in health research: Exercise helps you live
longer and better. Live 2 B Healthy is dedicated to helping seniors remain strong
and healthy to keep them mobile and active throughout their aging years. Keeping
seniors actively involved in preventative exercise programs will reduce their risks
of becoming ill, or experiencing a fall or injury. Regular exercise also aids in slowing
down the aging process, and reducing the need of medical interventions.
“Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start
today and make a new ending.” ~Maria R., Live 2 B Healthy Participant
