The Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle
January 28, 2018, at Eleven o’clock in the Morning

We are glad you are here. No matter who you are, no matter where you
come from, and no matter where you are on the journey of life — you are
welcome in this church. We invite you to participate in our worship service,
or simply observe, as you wish.

We hope you will find Saint Paul’s to be a place of refreshment and renewal,
where you experience the presence of the risen Christ. We have been serving
Christ in this location for over two hundred sixty years. The monuments
in our church and the graves in our churchyard reflect the conflicts and
complexities of our nation’s and our city’s history. While our building is old
and beautiful, our mission is contemporary and forward moving. Here you
will find a people very much connected with the questions and struggles of
modern life and faith and of following the way of Jesus.

We are a community called to serve those in need in our city, in our nation,
and around the world. Here you will find ministries with and for children,
youth, parents, seniors, singles, and families in all configurations and stages
of life.

We invite you to share your contact information on a visitor’s card, located
in each pew. Hand it to one of our clergy, an usher, or place it in the offering
plate.

                                         About Worship
If the liturgy (worship) of the Episcopal Church is unfamiliar, then we hope you will find this
information helpful.

You are welcome in the Episcopal Church, and so the first and best resource we offer are your
neighbors in the pews. Just say, “I’m visiting,” and they will gladly help.

The worship of the Episcopal Church is rooted in the practices of ancient Christianity. The structure
of our services, the architecture of our building, the music, our physical postures and participatory
responses ALL hold rich meaning about our beliefs and are intentional expressions of our
relationship with God.

• Episcopalians customarily pray either standing or kneeling, so please do what you find most
    comfortable.

                             About Receiving Holy Communion
ALL who come in faith are invited to receive Holy Communion at Saint Paul’s.

• During communion, the people form two short lines in the center aisle at the steps. After
receiving the bread and wine or a blessing at the altar rail, please exit through the door to the
left of the altar and return to your pew via the side aisles.

• For those who may prefer not to receive communion at the main altar, a communion station is
provided on the main floor to the right of the center aisle. If you are unable to receive at either
station, the clergy will bring the bread and wine to your pew. Please notify an usher before the
    service begins.

• To receive a blessing at the altar rail without receiving Communion, cross your arms over your
chest, palms on your collar, until the person on your left has received both the bread and the
    wine.

• If your children are in the nursery, you are invited to bring them to receive Holy Communion or a
    blessing.

Officiant Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse
the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and

The Collect of the Day

Officiant The Lord be with you.
People And also with you.

Officiant Let us pray.

O God, by the preaching of your apostle Paul you have caused the light of the Gospel to shine throughout
the world: Grant, we pray, that we, having his wonderful conversion in remembrance, may show ourselves
thankful to you by following his holy teaching; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
The First Reading Acts 26:9-21

Paul said to King Agrippa, “Indeed, I myself was convinced that I ought to do many things against the name of
Jesus of Nazareth. And that is what I did in Jerusalem; with authority received from the chief priests, I not only
locked up many of the saints in prison, but I also cast my vote against them when they were being condemned
to death. By punishing them often in all the synagogues I tried to force them to blaspheme; and since I was so
furiously enraged at them, I pursued them even to foreign cities. “With this in mind, I was traveling to Damas-
cus with the authority and commission of the chief priests, when at midday along the road, your Excellency,
I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining around me and my companions. When we had all
fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew language, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecut-
ing me? It hurts you to kick against the goads.’ I asked, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ The Lord answered, ‘I am Jesus
whom you are persecuting. But get up and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to
appoint you to serve and testify to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear
to you. I will rescue you from your people and from the Gentiles—to whom I am sending you to open their
eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may re-
ceive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’ “After that, King Agrippa,
I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, but declared first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and
throughout the countryside of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God and
do deeds consistent with repentance. For this reason the Jews seized me in the temple and tried to kill me.”

Psalm 67 Sung by the choirs Anglican Chant by Edward Cuthbert Bairstow

1 May God be merciful to us and bless us, *
show us the light of his countenance and come to us.

2 Let your ways be known upon earth, *
your saving health among all nations.

3 Let the peoples praise you, O God; *
let all the peoples praise you.

4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, *
for you judge the peoples with equity
and guide all the nations upon earth.

5 Let the peoples praise you, O God; *
let all the peoples praise you.

6 The earth has brought forth her increase; *
may God, our own God, give us his blessing.

7 May God give us his blessing, *
and may all the ends of the earth stand in awe of him.
The Second Reading Galatians 1:11-24

   I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel that was proclaimed by me is not of human origin;
for I did not receive it from a human source, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus
   Christ.

You have heard, no doubt, of my earlier life in Judaism. I was violently persecuting the church of God and was
trying to destroy it. I advanced in Judaism beyond many among my people of the same age, for I was far more
zealous for the traditions of my ancestors. But when God, who had set me apart before I was born and called
me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, so that I might proclaim him among the Gentiles, I
did not confer with any human being, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were already apostles before
me, but I went away at once into Arabia, and afterwards I returned to Damascus.

Then after three years I did go up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and stayed with him fifteen days; but I did not
see any other apostle except James the Lord’s brother. In what I am writing to you, before God, I do not lie!
Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia, and I was still unknown by sight to the churches of Judea that
are in Christ; they only heard it said, “The one who formerly was persecuting us is now proclaiming the faith
he once tried to destroy.” And they glorified God because of me.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said to the twelve, “See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as
serpents and innocent as doves. Beware of them, for they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their
synagogues; and you will be dragged before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them and
      the Gentiles. When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say;
for what you are to say will be given to you at that time; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your
Father speaking through you. Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise
against parents and have them put to death; and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one
who endures to the end will be saved.”

The Nicene Creed All Stand

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.
          		 On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Confession

Officiant Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what
we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we
have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of
your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in
your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Celebrant It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth. Through the great shepherd of your flock, Jesus Christ our Lord; who after
his resurrection sent forth his apostles to preach the Gospel and to teach all nations; and promised to
be with them always, even to the end of ages. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels
and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory
          of your Name:

Celebrant We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in
creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and
above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate
from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from
evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth,
out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus
Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and
said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After
supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink
this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the
forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

All        We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;
Celebrant And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from
your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon
these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant.
Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the
Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that
heavenly country where, with Saint Paul and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of
your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the
Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy
Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth
as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those
who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the
kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread and Invitation

Celebrant Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.
People Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Celebrant This is the table, not of the Church, but of the Lord. It is made ready for those who love him and for
those who want to love him more. So, come, you who have much faith and you who have little, you
who have been here often and you who have not been here long, you who have tried to follow and

Lord, we offer thanks and praise for the circle of our days. Praise for radiant brother sun, who makes the hours
around us run. For sister moon, and for the stars, brilliant, precious, always ours. Praise for brothers wind and
air, serene or cloudy, foul or fair. For sister water, clear and chaste, useful, humble, good to taste. For fire, our
brother, strong and bright, whose joy illuminates the night. Praise for our sister, mother earth, who cares for
each of us from birth. For all her children, fierce or mild, for sister, brother, parent, child. For creatures wild,
and creatures tame, for hunter, hunted, both the same. For brother sleep, and sister death, who tend the
borders of our breath. For desert, orchard, rock, and tree, for forest, meadow, mountain, sea. For fruit and
flower, plant and bush, for morning robin, evening thrush. For all your gifts of every kind, we offer praise with
quiet mind. Be with us, Lord, and guide our ways around the circle of our days. - Reeve Lindbergh, 1998

Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior
Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us
now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and
singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Gospel According to Mark — Throughout this season of Epiphany, Fr. Jenkins will lead a crash course
on the Gospel of Mark. This formation opportunity is especially timely because we will encounter Mark’s
Gospel in our Sunday Eucharistic liturgy throughout 2018. There are no books for class, but it is strongly
recommended that you read the full Gospel straight through within the next two weeks, which should take
one and a half to two hours. Two opportunities to gather: In the chapel, Sundays at 9:30 am & Wednesdays
from noon to 1 pm.

If you are interested in the natural order of God's creation, you will be fascinated by David George Haskell's
book, "The Forest Unseen, a Year's Watch in Nature." The author conducts a search for the universal within
a tiny strip of land on the domain at Sewanee, the University of the South. Join the Creative Care team in the
study of his writings about the winter season at formation classes February 4 and February 11. Copies of the
book will be available for purchase. Contact Bryan Haltermann for more information at hpmellor@gmail.com.

If the idea of a morning of total silence sounds appealing, please join the Daughters of the King, Saturday,
February 3, 9:30 am – 12 noon. Bring “prayer tools” such as your bible, journal, or anything used for meditation
and Fr. Muir will lead us on a spiritual morning of quiet solitude. All are welcome, but please let us know if
you’d like to join us by contacting Suzanne Pursley-Crotteau at spursleycrotteau@gmail.com or 706-359-4480
before February 1.
