Explanation of the Cover Symbol
In the Greek language of the early Christian era abbreviations were typically the first and
last letters of words, often with a superscription to indicate the missing letters. IC is a
standard abbreviation of IHCOYC, the Greek “Jesus,” XC the abbreviation of XPICTOC,
“Christ;” NIKA means “He conquers.” The symbol then reads “Jesus Christ Conquers by
the Cross” or “Jesus Christ Victor.”

Welcome and Announcements

+Silent Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, be present now, our hearts in true devotion bow,
Thy Spirit send with grace divine, and let thy truth within us shine.
Unseal our lips to sing thy praise, our souls to thee in worship raise,
Make strong our faith, increase our light that we may know thy name aright.
  Amen.

+Confession of Sin
Silent Prayer

                        Call to remembrance, O Lord,
Thy tender mercies and thy loving kindness
Which have been ever of old.
O remember not the sins and offenses of my youth,
But according to thy mercy, think thou on me, O Lord,
                        For thy goodness.

Corporate Prayer
Most holy and merciful Father; we acknowledge and confess before you; our sinful
nature prone to evil and slothful in good; and all our shortcomings and offenses.
You alone know how often we have sinned; in wandering from your ways; in
wasting your gifts; in forgetting your love. But, O Lord, have mercy upon us; who
are ashamed and sorry for all wherein we have displeased you. Teach us to hate
our errors; cleanse us from our secret faults; and forgive our sins; for the sake of
your dear Son. And O most holy and loving Father; help us, we beg you; to live in
your light and walk in your ways; according to the commandments of Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.

Declaration of Pardon
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse
us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 (ESV)

The Lord Converses with Us

Worship of God with Tithes and Offerings
“Allemande” from French Suite no 5 in G ………………………………. J.S. Bach (1685 – 1750)

O Lord of heaven, and earth, and sea,
             To thee all praise and glory be;
How shall we show our love to thee, Giver of all?

For souls redeemed, for sins forgiven,
For means of grace and hopes of heaven,
Father, what can to thee be given, Who givest all?

We lose what on ourselves we spend,
We have as treasure without end
Whatever, Lord, to thee we lend, Who givest all.

To thee, from whom we all derive
Our life, our gifts, our power to give:
O may we ever with thee live, Giver of all! Amen.

*Congregational Petitions and the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy
will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And
forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever. Amen. Matthew 6:9-13 (KJV)

Scripture Lesson Mark 2:13-17 (ESV)

   13
He went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to him, and
he was teaching them. 14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus
sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed
him.
    15
And as he reclined at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners
were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed
him. 16 And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating
with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax
collectors and sinners?” 17 And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who
are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the
righteous, but sinners.”

The Lord’s Supper

                                    Procedure
• The order will generally be the balcony, and then the main floor starting in the
  back.
• There will be two lines, with congregants entering via the inside aisle and
returning to their seats via the outside aisles.
• There are two options for bread: regular bread on the plate or packaged gluten
free bread marked “GF” in the basket. There are two options for the cup: wine
in colored cups or juice in clear cups.
• The mobility impaired will be served in their seats after the line ends. Please be
sure to alert one of the servers if you have that need.

You are welcome to participate in the Lord’s Supper if you are a baptized Christian,
a follower of Jesus Christ, and a faithful member or adherent of this or some other
congregation, recognized as belonging to the fellowship of Christian believers. If
this does not describe you, we are glad you are here and commend to you this
prayer for your use during the time of the Lord’s Supper. The pastors or elders
would love to talk to you further about this after the service. Please introduce
yourself to one of them.

Lord Jesus, help me to see that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared
admit, but that through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope.
I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering
me forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead,
help me now to trust in you as my Savior and my King. Amen.

+Silent Prayer
O Merciful God, who has made all men, and hates nothing that you have made,
nor desires the death of a sinner, but rather that he should be converted and live;
Have mercy upon all who do not know you as you are revealed in the Gospel of
your Son. Take from them all ignorance, hardness of heart, and contempt of your
Word; and so bring them home, blessed Lord, to your fold that they may be made
one flock under one shepherd Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with
you and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

Cast thy burden upon the Lord; and He shall sustain thee:
                 He never will suffer the righteous to fall;
He is at thy right hand.
Thy mercy, Lord, is great, and far above the heavens.
Let none be made ashamed that wait upon Thee!

                                  Adult Sunday School Class
The Adult Sunday School class concerns the subject of Pastor Rayburn’s new book, The Truth
in Both Extremes: Paradox in Biblical Revelation. Every reader of the Bible has encountered this
phenomenon, whether or not he or she has thought about what it means, why it exists, or
what is to be done when we encounter it. The Bible says one thing here, that seems to be
virtually the contradiction of something it says there. We are delivered from the power of sin
in one place and remain bondslaves to it in another. Once a Christian always a Christian in
one place, in another Christians who started well did not finish. In fact, virtually everything
the Bible teaches is taught in this way of polarity, of apparent contradiction, of paradox.
Coming to terms with this phenomenon is the challenge the Bible faces us with on virtually
every page. But it is also the way in which the truth must be taught, given the limitations of
our intellect, and given our penchant for preferring some biblical teachings to others. Join
Pastor Rayburn in the Sanctuary.

                                Women’s Sunday School
This week Sarah Gauthier will be leading a study going through the book, Confronting
Injustice Without Compromising Truth. We meet in the Women’s Ministry of Faith room 105
downstairs.

                               High School Sunday School
Christians are often accused of being unreasonable and intolerant by unbelievers, who
argue that Biblical perspectives are hateful if the Biblical perspectives disagree with their
own secular views. This can make conversations about God and life very difficult, and these
secular perspectives can even begin to seep into our thinking and make us question our
own Christian worldview. In this Sunday school we will be using Tim Keller’s book, The
Reason for God, and we will analyze worldly ways of thinking while seeking to gain a
better understanding of why we believe what we believe. High schoolers (9-12th grade) are
encouraged to join us with Pastor Gutiérrez Sundays, 10:00 -10:45am, in the library.

                                     This Evening
Pastor Gutiérrez will preach this evening from Isaiah 35:1-10: “Hope for the Weak, the
Broken, and the Anxious”

Nancy Guthrie’s book The Promised One: Seeing Jesus in Genesis.
“After the resurrection, when Jesus used Scripture to explain who he was and why he came,
where did he start? In the Old Testament. And this is where The Promised One begins to
look for Christ, finding him in the people, promises, and patterns of the Old Testament
Scriptures.”
If you’re not sure you can attend in person, or if you are out of town and would like to
participate, we have a number of women who zoom with us. Contact Dawn Darby for
more information.

                               Tuesday Evening Bible Study
We meet every 1st and 3rd Tuesday evening, using Jen Wilkin’s book Better: A Study of
Hebrews. In this verse-by-verse study, we will explore how God “provided something better
for us” in the person of Jesus Christ (Heb. 11:40). Through stories of Old Testament heroes
and practices, the author of Hebrews demonstrates how the new covenant is superior to the
old and how Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of every promise.
