Trinity Episcopal Church The Messenger FROM THE RECTOR’S DESK Happy new year! I want to thank everyone who participated in the great Advent and Christmas series Worship Schedule: Sunday in the Sanctuary 10:00 am, & Online of events at our church. It was a time of warmth, excitement, and blessing for our community of faith, and those visitors that were able to join us. Trinity Lumberton, North Carolina January 2023 Edition is a special place, and I look forward to our next year together. Having said that, I am aware that starting the new year can be somewhat difficult for some of us. We've just cruised through the activities and emotions of the holiday season, and now we're facing what is perhaps our least favourite month - January. Ah January! The month when post-holiday diets start and bills must be paid. Holiday energy has been transplanted by winter sluggishness. Does it seem no matter how hard you try, you just can't find your joy in the aftermath of the holidays? If so, you're not alone. Therapists tell us the post holiday blues are common, but there are things we can do to deal with them. For the most part, it's simple stuff. Plan one thing each day that you enjoy. Read an uplifting book, be intentional about exercise and adequate sleep. As always, another way to lift ourselves out of the blues is to focus on the needs of others - put a smile on someone's face, visit someone who is ill or needs encouragement. Whatever the holiday transition looks like for you, remember to stop for a moment and breathe in God's peace. Recall God's word in Psalm 46:10: "Be still and know that I am God." Remind yourself that whatever's making life hectic or difficult today, our Lord is present with you to lead and guide your steps to accomplish what's needed in God's time. In this season of making New Year's resolutions, try this one. Find time every day to focus and meditate for a few moments on Matthew 11:28: "Come unto me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." In January, as in all the months of the year, God always has a word for us. "This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." Grace and Peace, Gene† 1
Senior Warden's Report Our Annual Parish meeting in December said goodbye to vestry members Charles Anene, George Nobles, and Holt Moore, Senior Warden. A special thank you to Holt from our Parish for serving so admirably during the reworking of the ductwork in the sanctuary and roof and ceiling renovation caused by a falling tree limb in the Parish Hall. Working with the vestry, he was responsible for managing COVID protocols, which disrupted all of our services. Holt's leadership during these times was a gift of time and talent to our Trinity family that was above and beyond most previous wardens duties. Thank you, Holt. On another note, new members elected at the Annual meeting brings our vestry back to an almost full complement of its membership. The following classes are in place for 2023- 2025: Class of 2023: Lisa Bedell, Annette Burke, Rosemay Gibson, and Floyd Locklear (serving 4th/extra year) Class of 2024: Kathy Hansen, Cat Gaines (1 year term), Candy Borbet (2 year term), 1 Vacancy Class of 2025: Dencie Lambdin, Cherry Beasley, Tammy Biggerstaff, Lisa Donovan At this same meeting, the following delegates were elected to attend our 140th Diocesan Convention to be held in Greenville, NC, the weekend of February 10-11, 2023: Sam Currin, Rosemary Gibson and Dencie Lambdin. The first vestry meeting of the new year will take place on Tuesday, January 10th in the library of the Parish Hall. Dencie Lambdin, Senior Warden The Altar Guild’s Flower and Ambry Candle Calendars are posted in the Parish Hall. The Sunday flowers are $50, and the weekly Ambry candle is $10. These are lovely ways to express your memorial recognition for a loved one, or celebrate a special occasion. Please fill out the form, which is provided, along with your check or cash, and leave it in the church office. 2

Musically Speaking I want to take a moment here in the new year to thank each and every one of our church musicians, who worked overtime, and performed beautifully over the seasons of Advent, Christmas, and Lessons and Carols. This extra work, and practice, makes for a wonderful celebration each year that is so very meaningful to our church. I was pleased to see the Christmas Eve parishioners return to behold the beauty of our church, and give thanks for the dedication of our members in offering an important community event in the life of our church. As Epiphany fast approaches, I hope that it will bring with it a newness of spirit and forward energy in our church life. May we, like the Kings of old, bring our gifts and talents forward in blessing through this new year.
