MEDITATION
But now, with Jesus joining heaven and earth together in his own person, the Holy Spirit,
which anointed and equipped Jesus himself for his kingdom work, comes pouring out
onto his followers, so that they become as it were an extension of that new Temple.
Where they are, heaven and earth are joined together. Jesus is with them, his life is at
work in and through them, and, whether in Jerusalem or out in the wider world, they are
the place where the living God, the God who is reclaiming the world for his own, is alive
and active and establishing his sovereign rule.
                                                                   N. T. Wright, Simply Jesus

It is thus by an action of the sovereign Spirit of God that the church is launched on its
mission. And it remains the mission of the Spirit. He is central.

The Presence of God May 23, 2021 Pentecost Sunday - Second City Church
WELCOME
             Second City Church is a community that exists
                      to worship the Triune God
                  and to celebrate, in word and deed,
                the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Harrisburg.

WHO we are? Second City Church is a community that exists to worship
the Triune God and to celebrate, in word and deed, the Gospel of Jesus Christ
in Harrisburg.

WHAT is the Gospel? It is the announcement (literally “good news”) that
Jesus’ cross and resurrection were the beginning of salvation for the entire
cosmos and will be completed when he returns. God is restoring the peace
(shalom) of his creation through the work of Christ and is renewing people,
families, neighborhoods, cities and nations, as people trust and follow him.

HOW do we celebrate the Gospel? Through faithful proclamation and
obedient demonstration. Weekly worship services are the core opportunity for
everyone to know how God is setting things right and to thank him publicly for
it. This public celebration spills over to the rest of our lives where we serve
our neighbors as Christ has served us.

Thank you for joining us in worship today. We hope this guide will help you
participate in our service. If you have any questions about our worship, faith, or
how you can be a part of our mission to serve God and neighbor in
Harrisburg, be sure to talk to our pastor. If you would like to indicate your
presence to us or include a prayer request, please fill out the form on the back
page of this bulletin and place it in the slotted box in the sanctuary entrance.

Words of Welcome

Call to Worship

  Bless the Lord, O my soul!
     O Lord my God, you are very great!
  You are clothed with splendor and majesty,
     covering yourself with light as with a garment,
     stretching out the heavens like a tent.
  He lays the beams of his chambers on the waters;
  he makes the clouds his chariot;
     he rides on the wings of the wind;
  he makes his messengers winds,
     his ministers a flaming fire.
                                                                           Psalm 104:1-4

Greeting

 The Lord will pour out his Spirit upon all flesh,
 And your sons and daughters shall prophesy.
 Your old men shall dream dreams,
 And your young men shall see visions.
 You shall know that the Lord is in the midst of his people,
 That he is the Lord and there is none else.
 And it shall come to pass
 That everyone who calls on the Name of the Lord shall be saved.
                                                      - Joel 2:27-28, 32; Acts 2:17, 21
 The Lord be with you.
 And also with you.

Confession of Sin

 Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from
 you no secrets are hid. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the
 inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and
 worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Words of Forgiveness & Peace

 “I will take you out of the nations;
 I will gather you from all the countries.
 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean.
 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you;
 I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
 And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees.
 You will be my people, and I will be your God.”
                                                                  based on Ezekiel 36:24-28
 Brothers and Sisters in Christ: by the power of the Spirit,
 we are united with Christ and given a new spirit.
 Live in the joy and peace of that assurance.

Come Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove

Come, Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove Dear Lord, and shall we ever live
With all Thy quickening powers At this poor dying rate
Kindle the flame of sacred love Our love so cold, so faint to Thee
In these cold hearts of ours And Thine to us so great

Look, how we grovel here below Come, Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove,
Fond of these earthly toys               With all Thy quickening powers;
Our souls, how heavily they go Come, shed abroad the Savior’s love
To reach eternal joys And that shall kindle ours

Come Holy Spirit, Come

Come, Holy Spirit, come Then lead to Jesus’ blood
Let Thy bright beams arise And to our wondering view reveal
Dispel the darkness from our minds The secret love of God
And open all our eyes
                                         Oh come, Holy Spirit
Cheer our desponding hearts Oh come, Holy Spirit, come
Thou heavenly Paraclete
Give us to lie with humble hope Dwell, therefore, in our hearts
At our Redeemer’s feet Our minds from bondage free
                                         Then we shall know and praise and love
Oh come, Holy Spirit The Father, Son, and Thee
Oh come, Holy Spirit, come
                                         Oh come, Holy Spirit
Convince us of our sin Oh come, Holy Spirit, come

    Psalm 23
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures.
      He leads me beside still waters.
3        He restores my soul.
      He leads me in paths of righteousness
         for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
         I will fear no evil,
      for you are with me;
         your rod and your staff,
         they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
         in the presence of my enemies;
      you anoint my head with oil;
         my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
         all the days of my life,
      and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
         forever.

Old Testament Reading

 Exodus 19:16-20

16 On the morning of the third day there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud on
the mountain and a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled.
17 Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their stand

at the foot of the mountain. 18 Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the Lord
had descended on it in fire. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole
mountain trembled greatly. 19 And as the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder,
Moses spoke, and God answered him in thunder. 20 The Lord came down on Mount Sinai, to
the top of the mountain. And the Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses
went up.

 Thanks be to God.

New Testament Reading

 Acts 2:1-13

When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly
there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house
where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on
each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other
tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
   5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under

heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because
each one was hearing them speak in his own language. 7 And they were amazed and
astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we
hear, each of us in his own native language? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents
of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and
the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and proselytes,
Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”
12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But

others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”

Gospel Reading

 Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John:
 Glory to you, O Lord!

 John 16:7

Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go
away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

 The Gospel of the Lord.
 Praise to you, O Christ!

Sermon - Pastor Peter Rowan - The Presence of God

                                                9
Creed

 Let us affirm the faith of the Church:

 I believe in God, the Father almighty,
 Creator of heaven and earth.
 I believe in Jesus Christ,
 his only Son, our Lord,
 who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
 born of the virgin Mary,
 suffered under Pontius Pilate,
 was crucified, died, and was buried;
 he descended into hell;
 on the third day he rose again from the dead;
 he ascended to heaven,
 and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
 from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
 I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,
 the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
 the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

The Prayer of Great Thanksgiving

Invitation

 The Lord be with you.
 And also with you.
 Lift up your hearts.
 We lift them up to the Lord.
 Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
 It is right for us to give thanks and praise.

Praise God for His Mighty Acts

 God of surprises, your Spirit broods over the waters at creation and lived among your
 chosen people in wilderness, exile, and promised land.Your Spirit filled Mary’s womb at the
 moment of Jesus’ conception and came upon him like a dove at his baptism. When Christ
 died on the cross your power raised him from the tomb on the third day, and that same
 evening he breathed your forgiving grace on those who had deserted him. On the day of
 Pentecost you sent your Spirit upon the fearful disciples, filling them with fire, with power,
 with wonder and joy, and making them your church. And so we gladly thank you, with
 angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, singing the hymn of your unending
 praise.

                                             13
Sanctus

Praise for Christ’s Sacrifice

 Let us proclaim the mystery of our faith.`
 Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again.

Calling on the Holy Spirit

We pray in the name of Jesus, who taught us:

 Our Father, who art in heaven:
 hallowed be thy name.
 Thy kingdom come;
 thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.
 Give us this day our daily bread
 and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.
 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
 For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory,
 for ever and ever.
 Amen.

                                     14
Invitation to the Table

 Jesus said: I am the bread of life.
 Whoever comes to me will never be hungry,
 and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

Sharing Holy Communion
 Second City Church welcomes all baptized Christians who have made a public profession of faith in Jesus
 Christ in a Christian church to join us in this sacrament. Non-communicants can come forward and ask
 for a blessing. If you need to receive communion in your seat, ask a fellow worshiper to let the communion
 servers know. If you are unable to receive wine, you will find a chalice containing non-alcoholic grape juice
 at the station the pastor is serving.The communion bread is gluten-free.

Closing Prayer

 Almighty and God,
 we thank you for feeding us, in these holy mysteries,
 with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood
 of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ;
 and for assuring us, through this Sacrament, of your favor and
 goodness towards us:
 that we are true members of the mystical body of your Son, the blessed
 company of all faithful people;
 and are also heirs, through hope,
 of your everlasting kingdom.
 And we humbly ask you, heavenly Father,
 to assist us with your grace,
 that we may continue in that holy fellowship,
 and do all the good works that you have prepared for us to walk in;
 through Jesus Christ our Lord,
 to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,
 be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.
