9/26 Tina & Maddy PearsonSearch Committee
As a child, we played “Party Line.” The first person whispered something to the
second person, who would then whisper to the next person, what he heard – or
thought he heard. By the time “the whisper” got to the last person, what he/she had
heard bore little resemblance to the original sentence. Recently, someone told me
she heard the Search Committee was about to decide between two finalists. I wish
that were true, but it is not. We are just gathering names to contact to see if they are
interested in being a candidate for our position.
When I have initial conversations with possible candidates, I have a list of
congregational positives that I mention.
We are the rare congregation that doesn’t have a family, individual, or group that
makes all of the decisions.
The vast majority of our members realize – and are willing – to do things
differently so that we might survive and thrive.
The vast majority of our members are ready to put personal preferences aside for
the good of our congregation.
We may be going through a difficult time – but we have always achieved
everything we have attempted – and we will this time.
We are a Disciples of Christ congregation – through and through - and recognize
that we are not fundamentalists, evangelicals, independents, etc. We believe that
God calls women to service equally to men – and are not secondary Christians;
that when science and faith disagree, we need to re-examine our faiths – God
creates and science describes; the Bible was written by men – not God - who
were expressing their love for God; and that God is not angry, looking for ways to
exclude people from Divine Grace.
Because God loves all people unconditionally, we are called to love and help all
people - unconditionally.
We believe in an educated clergy – and laity.
We have an excellent facility.
Our people are fortunate and exceedingly generous.
We are close to the advantages of Lexington, Louisville, and Cincinnati and yet,
have the advantages of a wonderful small community – and a great university!
Our congregation has found its greatest ministry in reaching out helping our local
community.
Richmond grew 33% between 2002 and 2018.
And the list goes on and on!
GlennSplinters From The Board
The Church Board met via Zoom on August 18 with twelve members attending in addition to
Phil Miller and Emily Fritz. Joe Rice, the Treasurer, gave a detailed financial report, which
included the announcement that the church’s PPP Loan of $44,000 in 2020 has been forgiven.
The church’s total expenses are under the scheduled amount but so are contributions.
Nevertheless, the church has given about $6,000 in assistance to needy individuals. The
Board approved moving $2,200 from surplus in the Wedding Fund to the Minister’s
Assistance program. Meanwhile, the Annual Golf Scramble will raise thousands of dollars to
support our youth ministry. The Board stated that work with the Young Disciples & children
can be included as a recipient of this fund. The Intergenerational Ministry team oversees the
Designated Youth Fund.
It is time to plan the budget for 2022 and the fall stewardship/pledge campaign. One member
suggested including a link to our online giving portal in the comment section of our weekly
Facebook livestream worship.
The Personnel Committee plans to ask for funding to fill an office manager position starting
in January. In the meantime, the committee will be developing the job description and the
hiring process.
The Board discussed seeking grants to help fund local outreach efforts and putting more
effort into cultivating an endowment or legacy fund with long-term giving plans for church
members.
Finally, the Board reaffirmed support of the early worship service even though its attendance
is not large.

We are delighted to welcome three Choral Scholars to our music ministry this fall. This program
provides EKU students with solo and choral singing opportunities with our Chancel Choir as
well as the support of a “home away from home” church family. Please welcome:
Will Black (tenor) is a sophomore vocal performance major from Richmond, KY.
Tori Sizemore (soprano) is a senior music education major from London, KY. (Tori sang with us
for several months before the pandemic as well.)
Christian Snyder (bass) is a sophomore vocal performance major from Richmond, KY.

Our annual church bazaar is ramping up preparations for

benefiting Youth & Children'
On Friday, August 27th, we held our 18th
Annual Golf Scramble. This year, it was held
at Arlington's golf course for the first time, and
we had teams from across the Commonwealth
and even as far away as TN join us! 17 teams
played, and we handed out prizes for 1st, 2nd,
and last place, as well as being able to provide
door prizes, a great silent auction, and fully
donated breakfast and lunch. This was our first
year working without our classic team of
dedicated and amazing Golf Scramble
volunteers. They passed the reigns over to our
new volunteer team, and wow- our new team
stepped right up! Many thanks to all who
donated their time, energy, financial support,
and moral support to this big endeavor. We are
proud to say that our community helped us
raise over $8,000 to support our Children &
Youth programs! This is great- especially as
we work to re-establish children's programs
that have long been dormant, reinvigorate our
youth and provide opportunities for camp
scholarships, mission trips, and more! Make
sure to check out our Facebook and Instagram
for more great photos from the Scramble,
courtesy of Jesse Ward and Dr. Miller!Back to school Bash
Thanks to the generosity
of our church &
community, we were able
to provide school supplies
and a fun afternoon of
events and snacks for a
great group of families!
We had enough to send
to supply our local
resource center as well!
