Introduction

Acting VP Cluster Engagement (recently appointed)

Newly Formed Portfolio – Complete a Pilot Project

Presentation Purpose: to answer the question
“What is the Cluster Engagement Portfolio about and How will the
      Portfolio Benefit Members ??”

Agenda –> Background –> Structure –> Benefits –> Pilot Project

                                        Cluster Engagement – Member Benefits 6 JUNE 2021 12
Background – Why?

- Pandemic resulted in new ways of working
- Could not hold Monthly Meeting that enabled
   o Networking – In Person

   o Knowledge dissemination

o Chapter event and activity announcements

- Virtual monthly webinars replaced benefits 2 and 3 above,
- Networking became a gap
Transformation Process led to the idea that PMI could
facilitate small groups of members to interact / network
whilst complying with restrictions on group gatherings

Key Phrases Describing Model Outcomes

Key outcomes to be derived

 • “Not Average but Individualised”
 • Community
 • Collaboration “Average is
 • Intimacy

                                        Cluster Engagement – Member Benefits 6 JUNE 2021 15
Expected Cluster Activities

Meetups – virtual / in-person
 • Discussions around PM topics e.g latest webinar reviewed, much like a book club;
   synopsis of a resource
 • Share personal work challenges

 • Discuss PMI related business

 • Share resources

 • Engage with PM / Topical Expert – can be another PMI Member (expert / test
   talk)
 • CSR Projects

                                          Cluster Engagement – Member Benefits 6 JUNE 2021 16
Benefits Desired

• Networking – more significant as few people are getting to know each other – more
intimate setting / interactions hence better-quality networking and engagement
• Group can drive interactions / engagements / activities that suit and interest that
small group i.e. big groups require many to fit in with the general consensus (the
    average man)
• Members input energy / drive into process rather than PMI leadership (bottom-up vs
    top-down process)
• CSR projects (social responsibility initiatives) can be undertaken very relevant to
that group’s locality e.g. a bridge restoration program; community support after an
event e.g. squatter camp fire - making the CSR projects more meaningful to the
member cluster as it is “close to home” so to speak

                                             Cluster Engagement – Member Benefits 6 JUNE 2021 17
Benefits Desired

• Use clusters to support each other
e.g. spouse’s employer moves spouse to Durban Office therefore family moves -
Durban clusters can help me find opportunity, relocation services etc - Members in
different areas can support each other as communications can be more direct; or my
company is starting a project in Durban and we are looking for a contract PM
• Solution to create more personal interactions

e.g. monthly meeting has 100 attendees, cannot meet all in melee’ of people, but
cluster is 10 people that meet on several occasions can get to know each other well
• Create Membership Culture of Engagement + Networking + Self Driven

Create a “NEW” Dimension that creates new value to membership

using PM skills for Life materials.
            - Provide mentorship support to the students.

mentorship program inviting mentors ( 2 hrs per Week) from the
  PMI global family.
• We received over 80 Mentor applications from across the PMI world
(US, Mexico, Kenya, India, Australis, Senegal, Nigeria, Australia,

Nelson Mandela
CHILDREN’S FUND
Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund [ NMCF] – PMI SA Chapter Initiative
• NMCF was founded in 1995 by South African President Nelson
Mandela, the objective being to address the challenges young
people from birth to age 22 face because of poverty and
  inequality.
• In 2018 PMIEF Global provided a grant to the Nelson Mandela
Children’s Fund (NMCF) to enable the staff to acquire and to
apply project management knowledge to enhance the
organization’s efficiency and to further ensure its impact and
  legacy.
• The “PMIEF – NMCF Capacity Building Through Project
Management” initiative strengthened NMCF’s internal project
management capabilities and helped the establishment of a
  project management office.
• PMIEF local volunteers are providing mentoring sessions to
the project managers and assist them in streamlining their
  processes.
• Our plans were halted due to Covid 19 but plans are underway
  to proceed post Covid 19.
• We need 2 volunteers to work on this program, 1 hour per
  week for 3 Months
                                                                     46
Home of Hope for Girls
Community Social Impact Project

• The PMI South Africa Chapter adopted Home of Hope for
Girls as their Social Impact Project in 2020.
• Home of Hope for Girls offers a safe home to children and
teens who have survived abusive situations, predominantly
  linked to child sex trafficking.
• The home’s strong emphasis on education is in line with
the PMI Educational Foundation’s vision of inspiring youth
to achieve their goals, making dreams a reality.
• PMI South Africa’s aim is to establish a long-term,
sustainable relationship with Home of Hope for Girls.
• Home of Hope for Girls does not receive any form of
financial support from the government - and operate solely
  on donations.

                                                               48
Home of Hope for Girls

• Home of Hope for Girls is a loving and safe family set-up
where, sometimes for the very first time, the children
  experience love and care.
• The girls are counseled, receive health-care, schooling and are
  supported in their studies.
• The home’s outreach program operates in the "hot-spots" of
Johannesburg - areas characterized by high unemployment,
collapse of societal values and dominance of ruthless pimps
  and drug dealers.
• Since 2000 the home has worked with ten thousand children
  through outreach and rehabilitation programs.
• Their mission is to honor the rights of children to live free from
sexual abuse, trafficking and exploitation, to pursue their
education and to grow into independent, productive adults.

                                                                       6 JUNE 2021 49
