Naval Nuclear Propulsion Plant Fundamentals (22.5 hours)
Prerequisite: None

This all new course (formerly Nuclear Plant Principles) introduces the naval nuclear propulsion plant to students
with limited or no background in the subject. Have you ever wondered how we use a nuclear reactor to make a
submarine or aircraft carrier move? The course begins with the definition of a naval nuclear propulsion plant and
what it does. Class discussions include various components used throughout a nuclear propulsion plant: pumps,
valves, etc., and how heat exchangers are used; some of the many systems found within a nuclear propulsion plant,
and how these systems work together to support operation of the ship. Students will become familiar with the
fission process and how the energy of fission is used to power a naval nuclear ship. Course material is presented
in an easy to understand way, appropriate for students with no physics background. The course also covers how
to operate a nuclear propulsion plant after it is built. Class discussions include plant startup, shutdowns, and how
the plant responds when we change speed. Finally, information provided includes how we, at the shipyard, work
with nuclear ships to build and refuel them. So bring your questions and get an understanding of how your role,
here at the shipyard, contributes to ultimately making our ships operate efficiently and safely.

ANGELA M. ALSTON (052) began her shipyard career on
November 28, 2012 in Department 053 Material Support.
Angela was introduced to the Hourly Leadership Development
Program and realized this Program was a “stepping stone” to get
promoted while building great ships! She became a part of the
Program in 2014. She enrolled in the TNCC Certificate Programs,
began completing course requirements and received the Fundamentals
of Organizational Leadership Career Studies Certificate in fall 2015.
By the time Angela completed the first Certificate, the “never stop
learning” bug had bitten her, and she continued her education to
receive the Supervision Career Studies certificate in 2017.
In March 2017, Angela was promoted to Dept. 052 as Supplier Development/Configuration Data Management
Controller 2. In the spring 2018 Angela completed course requirements to receive the Business Management
Program certificate. She plans to continue her education to obtain an Associate and Bachelor’s degree in Business
Administration.
“Being a part of The Hourly Leadership Development Program gave me the confidence I needed to
prepare and apply for my current position. The TNCC Certificate Program courses that I completed
helped to sharpen my critical thinking, listening and team building skills. While some of the coursework
and processes were challenging, with the assistance and support of the Night School Staff led by Shirley
Smith-King, Sharon Moore in Adult Continuing Education and Math tutor, Terry Tunstall (068), I was
able to complete all three Certificates and graduate with 4.0 GPA in each Certificate. Special thanks to my
classmates, co-workers, Gary Griffin (054) and Shipbuilders (too many to list) for your encouragement and
support throughout my journey. The experience was truly great!”

Fall 2018 9NEVER STOP LEARNING | STEPPING STONES TO SUCCESS 2018
NEVER STOP LEARNING
PAUL A. GEE, JR. (X47), began his shipyard career in 2003 as an
X31 Network Electrical Specialist. Paul left the shipyard in 2006
and returned in July 2007. In 2009, upon returning from a year’s
assignment in the Gulf Coast yard, Pascagoula, MS, he had a desire to
increase his knowledge and prepare himself for career advancement.
He joined the Hourly Leadership Development in the spring of 2010.
While working as an X31 Network Electrical Specialist, Paul’s
responsibilities include installing the HYDRA radios and battery
chargers onboard the USS Carl Vinson and the USS Roosevelt. He
also installed the fire alarm system in the defueling complex on board
the USS Enterprise.
While working on the USS Roosevelt, Paul completed course
requirements to receive TNCC certificates in Fundamentals
of Organizational Leadership Career Studies (Spring 2011), Supervision Career Studies (Summer 2011) and Industrial
Management Certificate (Fall 2012). While on the USS Enterprise, he continued his education to receive a Bachelor of Arts
degree in Business Administration/Technology Management from Saint Leo University in May 2014. After serving as a
long-term make-up foreman, Paul was assigned to the CMAF in the fall of 2015, working primarily on the sail component
of VCS submarines.
In April 2018, Paul was promoted to Dept. X47 as a Production Planner. He is currently enrolled in the Graduate Studies
program at Saint Leo University, to earn my MBA in 2019. He may even consider pursuing his PhD!
“The Hourly Leadership Development Program gave me the opportunity to learn and grow. It helped me to mature
into a leader and instilled in me the unshakeable confidence that everything is achievable. Webster dictionary
defines luck as the things that happen to a person because of chance: the accidental way things happen without being
planned. I do not believe in luck and I always want to be prepared. Throughout my educational pursuits, I have been
asked why I am doing this. My answer is simple ‘to learn new things, grow and position myself to take advantage
of opportunities when presented’. I also encourage fellow shipyard employees to take advantage of the Education
Assistance Program. This Program was very instrumental in helping me fulfill my educational endeavors. I would
like to thank God, Shirley Smith-King, the Learning Resource Center staff and ALL of my family, friends, and
coworkers who have assisted me on this journey…..Mere words don’t seem adequate to express my gratitude.”
