Careers News 6 December 2018| Mr David Russell, Curriculum Co-ordinator/Student Advisor

UAC University Application Changes for Year 12, 2019
CHANGES to the 2019 university admissions cycle.

 The UAC PIN will be emailed to all Year 12 students in late March 2019. The email address on your NESA
Confirmation of Entry form is the email address UAC will use.
 The UAC guide will be released to schools for distribution to students in late March 2019. This publication which
gives information about University courses will be smaller than previous years as the most up to date information
         will be online.
 Applications will open online in early APRIL, this is to accommodate all early entry schemes. Applications are
made online. There is a fee to apply.
 NOTE: not all courses will be listed in April however students will be able to add and subtract preferences as the
period progresses, UAC will update the website and information in the UAC news when we release more courses
         as they become available.
 Early Bird and SRS closing will be as usual at the end of September 2019. Early Bird applications are made by a
closing date in late September after which the application fee rises significantly. SRS stands for the Schools
Recommendation Scheme whereby students request through UAC for their school to give a recommendation
about their suitability for tertiary study… Universities can use the recommendation to make an early offer to the
         student for a university course.

The main aspect changing is the opening date, all other dates such as ‘close of preference’ and ‘offer dates’ similar to
 previous years.

Careers in Hospitality and Tourism
Article courtesy of Nathan Chanesman, CEO, My Career Match, Careers Newsletter, 4 December 2018

With holidays approaching, we look at careers in the growing tourism and hospitality industry. Millions of tourists from
overseas support an amazing variety of careers and occupations.

In Australia almost one million work in the sector, with 25,000 new jobs being added each year.

Careers in tourism offer many diverse roles and settings. Tourism careers include working in a hotel or resort, on a cruise
ship, in an adventure sports centre, as a tour guide leading activities and historical trips, as a travel guide writer or as a
driver or flight attendant. Individuals in the tourism field should have a love and appreciation for travel, strong
organisational skills to coordinate trips, services, schedules and accommodation, and enjoy working with people.

Many individuals pursuing a career in tourism have specialised skills and interest in particular activities such as scuba
diving, sailing, kayaking, hiking, etc.

Hospitality careers are focused in the accommodation and food industry. Hotels and restaurants support hundreds of
thousands of jobs. For job seekers post-school qualifications are often not required and a large share of the workforce is
aged 15 to 24.

The industry also offers training opportunities, with 24,600 apprentices and trainees employed in 2017.

But what about the cost of your course? In the same way as it is helpful to understand the structure of your program and
its graduate opportunities, it also helps to know exactly where you stand on the costs front. The cost of your education

Vocational Education VET Fees Structures and Loans
In the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector, tuition costs depend on a number of things. The main factors that
determine the amount you will pay are the fee structure of the VET course you are studying and the type of place you
receive.
Domestic VET students studying at diploma level or above are eligible for the federal government's VET FEE-HELP scheme,
which can be used to help cover part, or all, of the tuition fees for a course.
In this section we cover:

You’ll be employed by a Renault dealership that has openly expressed an interest in acquiring an apprentice, meaning
you’ll benefit from real world experience – all aspects of maintaining Renault vehicles, such as scheduled servicing
requirements and major diagnostic and repairs. Completed over four years, the apprenticeship combines this real world
experience with a diverse range of off-the-job training (three years block release) at the Renault Academy. In effect, you’ll

Financial Assistance and Scholarship Support
There are plenty of costs associated with tertiary study: course fees, books and computer equipment are just a few. If you
have additional expenses (such as rent if you need to live away from home), you may be wondering how you will manage
on a limited student income.
If you need financial assistance, you generally have two options as a student:
      Scholarships
      Government allowances
 Financial assistance for research students
      Student loans
      Other loan schemes
There are also schemes in place to assist you with the cost of student services and amenities fees and studying overseas.
Your institution may also offer additional financial assistance options. Our advice is to investigate your options the minute
you begin searching for courses. With the amount of information to get through, it doesn't hurt to start early!

student, and develop a tailored plan of support that addresses the barriers they are facing to their education.

The scholarships go beyond financial assistance, with the Department of Education supporting scholarship recipients
throughout their studies by linking them with mentoring programs and other support. The program will link students with
an appropriate mentor for the duration of their studies. An increase in Aboriginal early childhood teachers will help
ensure that Aboriginal perspectives are embedded in early childhood education, and that preschools are welcoming and
inclusive places for all children. Successful applicants will be offered a scholarship of up to $20,000 to complete a four-
year equivalent bachelor level early childhood education teaching qualification (or similar).
