IRS Get My Payment: What to know before using the tool
The IRS' payment-tracking tool, called Get My Payment, https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-
payment
requires a bit of explanation: The IRS has been updating its status tracking information overnight,
once a day. It isn't clear if that will continue now that the Jan. 15 deadline has passed.
If you try to access the tool during a busy period, you may wait in a queue before you can enter your
information.
You'll need to plug in your Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number,
date of birth, street address and ZIP or postal code -- so have those handy.
The portal may show your payment status, whether it's been scheduled, the payment method (direct
deposit or by mail) and date. It'll also let you know if the service can't yet determine your status --
more below on error messages.
The IRS has been sending payments on a schedule and in batches. If your check was issued, the
Get My Payment tool will show you the date it was sent.
Recovery Rebate Credit stimulus money : How to claim on your 2020 tax return
https://www.cnet.com/personal-finance/recovery-rebate-credit-how-to-claim-stimulus-money-on-
your-2020-tax-return/
You can file for any full or partial stimulus check payment you're owed, but the IRS lumps
into tax season 2020. Here's how it works.
Now that the window to receive your second stimulus check has closed, your next opportunity to
claim the stimulus money the government owes you from the second and first economic impact pay-
ments begins next month when you file your 2020 tax return.
The good news is you can start gathering all your tax paperwork now. But before you do, you should
first confirm your payment status online through the IRS. If the free service says your payment made
the deadline and is in the mail, you can then track it through the USPS. If you can't figure out the
confusing messages the IRS tool is telling you, if it appears there's been an error of some sort, or if
you seem to be missing money for your dependents, it may be time to turn to the IRS' Recovery Re-
bate Credit on your upcoming taxes.
24You won't be sent a separate check if you claim your money on your taxes. It would, however, either increase the size of
your total tax refund or lower the amount of taxes you owe. In some cases, you may have to initiate a payment trace on
your stimulus check instead. We break down what you need to know about filing for a Recovery Rebate Credit here. And
here are details on a third stimulus check, including how much money you could get and how fast it might
How to request a payment trace with the IRS
To request a Payment Trace, call the IRS at 800-919-9835 or mail or fax a completed Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement
Regarding Refund. Find out where to mail or fax that form for your state on the IRS website.
To complete From 3911, the IRS provides the following instructions:
1. Write "EIP" on the top of the form (EIP stands for Economic Impact Payment)
2. Complete the form answering all refund questions as they relate to your payment
When completing item 7 under Section 1:
Check the box for "Individual" as the Type of return.
Enter "2020" as the Tax Period.
Do not write anything for the Date Filed.
Sign the form. If you file married filing joint, both spouses must sign the form.
You should not mail Form 3911 if you've already requested a trace by phone. And you should not request a Payment
Trace to determine if you were eligible to get a check, or to confirm the amount you should have received, the IRS said.
Who's considered a nonfiler? What usually happens at tax time?
When it comes to stimulus checks, the IRS refers to people who didn't have to file taxes in 2018 or 2019 as nonfilers.
This group includes:
People who are part of the SSI or SSDI programs
Single people under age 65 with an income of less than $12,200
25Married people under age 65 with an income of less than $24,400
Single people age 65 or older with an income of less than $13,850
Married people age 65 or older with an income of less than $27,000
Veterans and Railroad Retirement beneficiaries
While young adults age 17-24 who are claimed as dependents on someone else's taxes don't have to file taxes, they
aren't eligible for a first or second stimulus check due to the rules set out in the CARES Act and the December stimulus
bill. Find out more about when you can receive your own stimulus check here.
Typically, during tax season, if you're included in any of the above groups, you don't have to file a federal tax return.
However, if you received any health care tax credits or subsidies, you'll need to file to keep receiving them. You can al-
so still file to get back any taxes withheld from your pay, or to claim certain refundable tax credits. That's what you're
going to have to do this year to claim your missing stimulus money.
Do nonfilers qualify for stimulus checks?
In most cases, yes. Most nonfilers fall below the income limits stipulated by each stimulus package and would be eligi-
ble for the full amount in each round -- $1,200 per person under the 2020 CARES Act, and $600 per person under the
December stimulus bill.
What do nonfilers have to do to claim a missing stimulus payment? Is it free?
In the first round of stimulus checks, the IRS sent letters to 9 million nonfilers with information on how to file a claim to
get their missing stimulus money. The agency instructed nonfilers to use the nonfilers tool to enter their information by
Nov. 21. However, if you missed that deadline, you can claim your money as a Recovery Rebate Credit by filing a 2020
federal income tax return -- even if you usually don't have to:
When you file a 2020 Form 1040 or 1040SR you may be eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit. Save your IRS letter -
Notice 1444 Your Economic Impact Payment - with your 2020 tax records. You'll need the amount of the payment in the
letter when you file in 2021.
If you did use the IRS nonfilers tool, you should have automatically received a second payment. If you didn't, you can
still file for that money as a Recovery Rebate Credit as well.
You can file for your Recovery Rebate Credit when you file for a federal tax return this year, even if you don't normally
do so. The IRS said it will start processing 2020 tax returns on Feb. 12, and federal tax returns are due April 15. (In
2020, the IRS extended the deadline to July 15 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic).
To get started, most nonfilers are eligible to use the IRS' Free File tool (if you make less than $72,000 a year, you can
use it). As the name suggests, this tool lets you obtain a free federal tax return and in some cases a free state return as
well. It's available to use now . Go to the Free File site and select Choose an IRS Free File Offer to see all of the options
available, which include companies like TaxSlayer and TurboTax. These
26programs should walk you through how to file your return and the Recovery Rebate Credit Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR,
all with no costs or fees.

How to set up Informed Delivery to track your stimulus payment in the mail
Informed Delivery has some limitations. For example, it will work with many residential and personal post office box ad-
dresses but not businesses. It also won't work for some residential buildings where the postal service hasn't yet identified
each
unit.
To check whether Informed Delivery is available in your area, head to the Postal Service's Informed Delivery page.
1. Tap Sign Up for Free.
2. Enter your mailing address and confirm it'll work with the service; then accept the terms and conditions and tap Con-
tinue.
3. On the next page, choose your username, password and security questions. Then, enter your contact information and
tap Continue.
On the next page, you'll need to verify your identity. Tap Verify identity online if you want to receive a verification
code on your phone or tap Request invitation code by mail if you want USPS to mail you a code. You may also have the
option to visit a post office to verify your identity in person. For more stimulus check details, here's how to calculate an
estimate of your total, what we know about a third stimulus check, what happens if you were overpaid and how some of
your rights have changed for the better with a second stimulus check
