Introduction Welcome to the We-CTV competition! What is We-CTV? As part of the No Knives Better Lives initiative, the Scottish Youth Parliament created We-CTV, an interactive competition which allows young people to explore the issue of interpersonal violence through creative media. No Knives Better Lives is a Scottish Government funded initiative which works with local organisations to provide information and support on knife crime and the dangers of carrying a knife. The initiative aims to raise awareness of the consequences of carrying a knife, and provides information on local activities and opportunities for young people. A project where young people envisaged and delivered solutions to the problem of knife crime, including teaching their peers, was created, in line with the youth-led ethos of the Scottish Youth Parliament. In previous years, young film makers created short videos to discourage their peers from carrying a knife. Groups from around Scotland were asked to submit a story board explaining their ideas for a film and the top groups were selected to enter the national competition. The Scottish Youth Parliament hosted a National Production Day for the participants on how to develop their creative ideas and produce powerful films. Experts in video production, as well as knife crime and violence, attended to offer advice and support to entrants. Once all the ideas and inspiration from the production day were converted into films, the completed videos were hosted online and the public were invited to select their favourites. The winning films were announced at an awards ceremony. We-CTV 2014/15 This year, We-CTV is bigger and better than ever! Entrants will be able to produce an anti-violence creative item from three categories: Art, Literature and Multimedia. This can be aimed at discouraging knife crime, but can also focus on other forms of interpersonal violence.

Structure of the Competition The We-CTV competition will be open to any school and/or youth group and organisations will support their entrants to enter the competition. Support will also be available from local Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament, We-CTV Champions and the Scottish Youth Parliament staff. Who are my local MSYPs and We-CTV Champions? There are Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYPs) representing every area of Scotland and they are directly elected by the young people of Scotland to represent them. The We-CTV Champions are a group of MSYPs working specifically on the We-CTV competition. They are experts on the competition, who can work directly with entrants in your organisation, and provide peer-to-peer support. You can invite your local We-CTV Champion to attend your school or youth group via the Scottish Youth Parliament Youth Engagement Team, whose details are provided in the Contacts Section of this document. Teams and Groups Teams will be made up of up to five 11-18 year olds across Scotland. Individual entries can also be submitted in some categories. The task will be for the group to produce a ‘creative item’ that would discourage their peers from ‘interpersonal violence’. Creative Items - Categories The creative items will fall under three categories: Art Literary Multimedia
