“For I am the LORD your God,
The Holy One of Israel, your Saviour.
I give Egypt as your ransom,
Cush & Seba in exchange for you.
Because you are precious in my eyes, and honoured,

What Does it Mean to Be Chosen?
Series 1 – Episode 3: “YOU ARE CHERISHED” – Part 2
Previously… God loves His chosen as a perfect parent does… no matter what…
…in return we simply need a child-like faith in Him

3.1 You are Cherished – Welcomed… continued…
• Mary… Matthew… Simon… Nicodemus…

• Mary grew up in Magdala, which was so morally bankrupt Rome destroyed it
  • likely didn’t feel precious, wickedness and evil had a stranglehold on her life
• Matthew’s childhood had godly training and education, but he still chose Rome
  • family destroyed by his disloyalty, he gave up being cherished for who he was
• Simon had meagre learning (Acts 4:13), but he was taught to stay faithful to God
  • suffered from pride & self-sufficiency, perhaps being cherished too sentimental
• Nicodemus a teacher among Pharisees probably had a solid Jewish upbringing
  • likely favoured heritage and stature rather than being cherished for who he was

3.1 You are Cherished – Welcomed…
• Abigail and Joshua…
  • fictional children created for The Chosen
…but based on actual interactions and Jesus’ words about children
  • unlike most adults who came into contact with Jesus…
…the children knew they had nothing of value to offer Him
…except their love and excitement to be there… with Jesus
• Jesus welcomed them, He wanted to spend time with them…
  …Jesus accepted them…
…not because of who they were, or what they could do…
…but because of who He is and what He does!
The Chosen TVP Interactive Bible Study
3.1 Welcomed… personal questions…
1. According to Matthew 18:1–4, what quality do children have that we
   should seek to emulate?
2. Read each of the come-to-Jesus stories…
        - Luke 8:1–3 (Mary)
        - Matthew 9:9–13 (Matthew)
        - Luke 5:1–11 (Simon)
        - John 3:1–12 (Nicodemus)
  • In spite of having vastly different life experiences…
…what do all four of these people have in common?
(Hint: the thing they have in common is the same as with children.)

3.2 You are Cherished – Apostles Creed
From the Church of Scotland…
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of Heaven and Earth,
and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by
the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead, he ascended into
Heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the Holy Catholic Church;
the Communion of Saints; the Forgiveness of Sins;
the Resurrection of the Body; and the Life Everlasting.

                                                                    ~1300 Paris

3.2 You are Cherished – Nicene Creed
From the Church of Scotland…
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of
the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten,
not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the
Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was
buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he
ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come
again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the
Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.
Amen.
                                                                                     17th Century Russian Icon

3.3 You are Cherished – Jesus is… Our Keeper
• It’s easy to understand why children are welcomed & cherished by Jesus
 • …cute, innocent, vulnerable, unvarnished, expectant, mouldable, trusting
• Unlike us…
 • they’re not jaded or judgemental or self-reliant or self-promoting
 • or stained by a lifetime of sinful choices…
 • it’s much harder to believe we’re cherished by God the way children are
 • that we could be the recipients of His perfect love
• But that’s exactly what we are, evidenced all the way back to Isaiah 43:4
“I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life”
The Chosen TVP Interactive Bible Study
3.3 You are Cherished – Jesus is… Our Keeper
• Ransoms are paid to keep what would otherwise be lost…
…as indicated by Isaiah some seven centuries before Jesus arrived
• God cherishes His chosen people so much…
…that He ransoms them back to Himself…
…He keeps them no matter the cost (1 Peter 1:18–19)
• When sin was stealing us away, Jesus became our ransom
• Jesus came in service of us to be the ransom for many (Mark 10:45)
• To return to God His chosen people “from every tribe…” (Revelation 5:9)
• We are clearly cherished by our Maker—in spite of having nothing to give
…because He pursues and forgives and redeems and keeps!

3.3 You are Cherished – Jesus is… Our Keeper…
JESUS: I have loved spending this time with you. You are all so very special. And I hope that My next
students ask the same questions you do and that they listen to My answers. But I suspect they
do not have the understanding you do.
      (He looks at Abigail)
And I hope that when the time comes, they will tell others about Me like you have.
CAMPSITE (Night…)
(Jesus puts the finishing touches on something we don’t see, and He sets it down next to a rock.
We then see Him writing something with coal on the rock. He smiles, and we—CUT TO:)
FIELD (Morning…)
(Abigail is walking alone with her doll. She rounds the corner to the campsite and freezes. We
see the site is empty. Other than a lifeless fire pit, everything is gone. Well, not quite everything.
As Abigail approaches, we see a simple, but well-crafted dollhouse: rock slabs held together by
first-century rope. Abigail notices the writing above it and reads aloud.)
ABIGAIL: “Abigail, I know you can read. You are very special. This is for you.
I did not come only for the wealthy.”

3.3 Jesus Is Our Keeper… personal questions…
3. In order to keep us, Jesus became like us…
…according to the apostle Paul in Philippians 2:5–8, what did that entail?
4. How should you respond to the idea that Jesus cherishes you enough to…
   (a) ransom Himself as payment for your sin
   (b) restore your relationship with God?
5. Not only did Jesus become like us to keep us, He also promises to make us
more like Him—which is exactly what He did in the lives of Mary, Matthew,
   and Simon Peter.
  • Read Galatians 5:18–24 and make a list of the characteristics that become
ours through the power of His Holy Spirit.
The Chosen TVP Zoom Bible Study
3.3 You are Cherished – Prayer Focus…
• Thank Jesus for ransoming Himself to keep us from being otherwise lost
• Thank God that we are so cherished… no matter the cost
• Thank God that we can be the recipients of His perfect love
• Ask the Holy Spirit to make us expectant… mouldable… trusting…
• Praise and thank God that He pursues and forgives and redeems and keeps
Further Study for these Episode 3 weeks…
• The OT encourages strong family relationships & family-based training on Faith in God
  (Deuteronomy 6:4–9)
• God is addressed as Father in the OT (Isaiah 64:8), Jesus did, too, but used the more
intimate Aramaic Abba (Mark 14:36) unprecedented in Jesus’ day. Jesus has a unique
relationship to the Father within the Trinity (John 1:14; 5:17–47; 10:22–39; 20:17)
  cf. Matthew 6:5–15; Luke 11:1–4; Romans 8:15; Galatians 4:6
• John 17 records Jesus’ prayer with His Father… see v11, 12 & 15… and we are in v20!!!

3.4 “YOU are Cherished”… group discussion & prompts…
1. What made you smile, or surprised you, most from Episode 3?
2. What thought struck you most from today’s study, and why?
3. The Fruit of the Spirit are God’s character revealed through us and
become more visible as we grow and mature in our Faith?
   • Re-read Galatians 5:22–24… how can we as TVP ripen the Fruit?
4. Although “subordinate” to Scripture the Creeds, Catechisms and
Westminster Confession are great resources for helping to strengthen
our Faith, is there anything we/TVP can do to increase awareness?
