As young people are at the heart of our service it is very important to us that their voice is heard. To enable us
to hear how we are doing we encourage all young people accessing WRL to take part in the electronic surveys
twice each year.
The feedback from these surveys helps us to make any improvements that are necessary and to take the
opinions of the young people into account and ensure their needs are being met.
It is always heart-warming when we receive positive feedback and the young people are happy with the service
they are accessing.

“
Our Functional Skill courses offer qualifications in English and Mathematics. They give
learners the practical skills needed to live, learn, work successfully and gain the ability to
apply these skills effectively in real life situations. Students say that they enjoy the subject as
it is taught with examples which they can relate to.”- Amanda Romain- Coventry College
The importance of offering Functional Skills through WRL is to support learners to gain a
qualification in Mathematics or English from Entry level through to level 2.
Functional Skills are free standing qualifications designed to give learners the skills to operate
confidently, effectively and independently in education, work and everyday life. They have
been created in response to employers’ recommendations that learners would benefit from a
thorough grounding in the basics and the ability to problem-solve. Functional skills support
the development of a broader range of aptitudes, attitudes and behaviours allowing learners
to make a greater contribution to the wider community.
“
Functional skills can also act as an alternative to learners who may not achieve mainstream
GCSE English and Mathematics qualifications and are recognised by colleges, apprenticeship
providers as well as employers. They offer greater flexibility with multiple resits of
components permitted.
