                                  SIÔN’S MESSAGE
                  Dear Friends,
For 309 days the church buildings have been closed. For
over 44 weeks we have not held a public worship service in
our sanctuary that actual people could attend. That ended
on January 31st 2021 when we eventually got back to
church. It has felt like an age since we opened the doors and welcomed
people in to the pews. It is good to be able to worship together, in person,
again. Now the hope is that we will be able to do these live services more and
more frequently. The next ones will be on February 14th and if all goes well we
will look to increase the frequency after that. We will keep you informed as to
when the church doors will be open but remember every service will now be
live streamed so you can always attend church wherever you are.
So when you read this our first live/live streamed services will have happened.
I know it won’t be without a mistake or two and technical difficulties will
plague us like frogs and boils did Pharaoh but we will have made it through.
And this will soon become the norm for most of our activities. We will use this
duel format of live and live stream for as many things as we can - services
and Bible Studies, Cooking classes and quizzes, book clubs and coffee chat;
so maybe the lockdown wasn’t all bad, perhaps a little good has come from
it; we can now include more people in more events, more often so let us
thank God for that.
Now this pandemic is far from over but we have reached a milestone this
weekend. We have opened the doors to the sanctuary again and that is
worth taking note of. I’m sure there will be times ahead when we will have to
change services at the last minute because of Covid concerns but today we
are open and that is no small thing.
There are many people to whom we should all be very grateful. That large
number of people who have made sure that worship could still happened at
the Melbourne Welsh Church over the last 10 months. It is wonderful to think
that we didn’t miss a Sunday service the whole time, in fact we had more ser-
vices last year than usual. We actually added a couple of services into our
calendar.
Yes, we floundered our way for a few weeks (did you see the bloopers?) until
we discovered how best to record and edit the worship, I think we got better
at it; we then installed a fantastic camera system that made everything easier
to film and now we can now even film and stream live at the same time.
Many people have helped to make sure that all this was possible and I want
to name a few of them here because they did great work - to Willie and
Maureen our fantastic caretakers, who kept the Church clean and as tidy as

they could with wires everywhere, thank you. To our amazing organists John -
who played for all the recorded services and Wendy who played for the live
services - you were lifelines to many people during dark days, thank you. To
the Elders who didn’t flinch at installing a camera system but saw it as the right
way to go and gave the Ministry Team all the support possible - my heartfelt
thanks to you. And of course Fred and Christine who kept us informed of what
was happening when - thank you so much - diolch o galon. On a personal
note to Sara and Bubba who made a difficult time a little easier by sharing
services, laughs and failures with equal good humour (it has a u in Sara, like
colour!) - thanks.
Finally a big thank you to all of you, the people of the the Melbourne Welsh
Church for your prayers, support and concern - the little messages we have
received each week have been invaluable to us. The Ministry Team has a
wonderful dynamic and when one of us is struggling the others always step up
with a word of encouragement they have heard or been sent by someone
like you, the person reading this letter - and so to you, from us, a huge thank
you.
And so if you need any more information on live/live streamed services or any
other of our activities, if you have any suggestions on how we could do things
better or if you would like to visit (virtual or in person) please contact me or
one of the Ministry Team.
God bless you all and see you soon in person or online,
Siôn.

               SARA’S MESSAGE
On March 13, 2020, we closed the doors of the church and
office and moved to remote work. It involved shifting
computer to home, and at the same time both my chil-
dren were doing the same for school, bringing home refer-
ence material and creating a space where we could all work … and doing it
again a few times until we got it right. I don’t think I’ll fully move back into the
office at work, and will hold onto the oddly flexible, mobile, and remote way
of working. We can Zoom from anywhere. If I am not on my computer, I can
use the iPad or my phone (although my eyes aren’t that good, so I tend NOT
to work on my phone). And, after starting out with shaky iPhones on funny
selfie-sticks held up with hymnals on a chair in front of the table and literal
hours of editing, we now have a truly state-of-the-art audio-visual system that
allows us to stream our service live to YouTube. It’s astonishing.
And now, almost a year later, we’re re-gathering. Our patience means that
with the usual CovidSafe restrictions that the rest of Victoria also follows, we
can safely worship. Masks are required if you’re indoors more than fifteen
minutes, but we can sing! Social distancing means we have a capacity just

6
under 50, but that is truly most of us, and if necessary, we can do more services
as long as we have time between them to clean and ventilate. We’ll figure
out how to have coffee and chat afterwards, but we will do it. We’ve figured
out how to do Communion. But patience will be called for.
We have decided to do one LIVE service a month (also on YouTube at the
same time) for January, February and March to work out the bugs. And
January has been chock full of administrative details, figuring out the rules and
regulations and how that translates into our behaviour at church.
Ironically, the Ministry Team is now re-learning some skills, and unlearning
others! We had to learn a lot of technical, electronic and social media skills
that we simply have not had to reach deeply into previous. Now, we have to
blend those with the skills we had before that. It’s a fascinating time to be in
ministry.
And so, on January 31, 2021, we open the front doors again. We won’t have
hymnals or Bibles, but we’ll have the words on the screens and in a new
bulletin. We will have music and song, and believe me, it is wonderful to FEEL
the organ play live and in-person. We will keep some of the old, we will keep
some of the new, and we will keep on being the church in Christ and with and
for each other and our neighbours.
Blessings and love,
Sara

                                 PETER’S MESSAGE
The past months have been hectic. Many trips to be with
family as my mother aged 92 spent her last days in palliative
care. It was an honour to plan and conduct mum’s funeral
                  alongside other family.
This reflection was sent to me recently while taking timeout in
Bright. I hope it resonates with you as it did me.
"Light looked down and saw the darkness
'I will go there,' said light.
Peace looked down and saw war.
'I will go there,' said peace.
Love looked down and saw hatred.
'I will go there,' said love.

There are many standard office management and administrative aspects to
this job, as well as random and unusual things that come up, so flexibility in
thinking as well as self-management is key.
The office serves as a hub for all congregational activities, programs, and
events. It is critical that information flows effectively and efficiently in and out
of the church office.
The office manager is responsible for the organisation and administration of
the office, production of various correspondence and publications for the
church or events, communication with ministry team, caretakers, and Elders,
purchasing and ordering, and updating of data, files, bookings and
incidentals such as ordering catering, changing church sign, and appropriate
forwarding of correspondence.
This must all be done in a confidential and professional manner.

                             NEWS FROM THE PEWS
Church regulars were recently dismayed and shocked to
learn of the sudden passing of Ruth Williams. Ruth resided in
a retirement village at Pakenham and as well as
worshipping with us at the MWC attended the Pakenham Uniting Church.
Many residents of the retirement village attended the David W. Bull Funeral
Home to farewell the lady at a service on Monday, January 18. The Rev. Sion
Gough Hughes, Chris. and Bronwen Holding, Janet Jones-Roberts and the
undersigned represented our church at Ruth's farewell.
Not much goss this month but I do know that Bronwen and Chris. Holding have
spent quality time in their caravan at Blairgowrie on the Mornington Peninsula
while Christine and Fred. Boomsma towed their 'van a little farther afield to
Cowes on Phillip Island to relax awhile. Geraldine Affley stayed with friends at
Mt. Eliza for a few days which included Australia Day, January 26. The lady is
bemoaning the fact that the Covid restrictions have prevented her usual
travel occasions to the harbour city- Sydney, for child sitting duties and quality
time with son Andrew and family.
As for Janet and myself - we are both making steady and satisfactory
progress from our misfortunes which commenced back in September on
Father's Day. I have spent time lately viewing a two disc video set of, ' The
Ffestiniog Welsh Highland Railway', produced back in 2012. My paternal
grandfather, a slate miner, travelled to and from the Blaenau Ffestiniog
quarries from his Penrhyndeudraeth home to work on the train which now of
course is a popular tourist train. Memories !!.
Many readers will have something in common with these next words - ' No-
body grows old by living a number of years. People only grow old by
deserting their ideals. Years wrinkle the skin but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles
the soul '. and, ' You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt , as
young as your self confidence, as old as your fear, as young as your hope, as
old as your despair ". and finally, " In the central place of your mind there is a
wireless station. So long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer,
courage, grandeur and power from the earth , from men and women and
from the Infinite ......then so long are you young'. I have several pages of
interesting quotes etc. (which I will be sharing with you ), given to me ages
ago by John Hutchinson ,a former colleague in the Victoria Welsh Male Voice
Choir and whom I was the gofer for at Radio Eastern 98.1 for five years but
where he was a presenter for almost 30 years.
I'll conclude with a brief one liner. " Any doubt- knock it out." Heard on The
Chase, Australia, on December 21.

                   2021 ST. DAVID’S DAY
                     GYMANFA GANU
This year’s Gymanfa Ganu will take the form of a ‘virtual’ event.
The current covid situation has lead us to cancel our normal Gymanfa Ganu
at St. Michael’s U.C. which is a huge disappointment to us all at the Welsh
Church but also to the many hundreds who regular attend this annual service.
To ensure that this year’s Gyamnaf Ganu remains something very special, we
have contacted many of our past Welsh guest conductors and all the Welsh
guest performers who have been so much a part of the success of our
Gymanfa Ganus over many years.
We have had an overwhelmingly positive response from these Welsh friends
who have enthusiastically agreed to ’take part’ via the wonders of modern
technology.
Our wonderful participants may include:
Conductors: Ilid Anne Jones, Dilwyn Price, Rob Nicholls, Geraint Roberts and
Edward Rhys Harry
Soloists: Eleri Edwards, Aled Edwards, Steffan Prys Roberts, Ffion Haf,
Kees Huysmans, Andrew Jenkins, Rhys Meirion and Aled Wyn Davies.

                      ULURU / AYRES ROCK
Perhaps Australia's most famous icon, the giant stone monolith of Uluru /
Ayers Rock is located right at the centre of Australia and serves almost
literally as Australia's heart.
Of great spiritual significance to Australia's indigenous people and an ever-
popular travel destination not just for Aussies but those from all over the
world, Uluru captures the mind and imagination with its ochre red beauty.
Here are some quick facts about Uluru / Ayers Rock that you may not
already know:
 Uluru was named "Ayers Rock" by Europeans in 1873 when William Gosse
gave it its title after Sir Henry Ayers, the Chief Secretary of South Australia at
    the time
 Uluru was originally formed under the ocean, and gradually hardened over
the course of hundreds of thousands of years
 The landmark has been officially known as "Uluru / Ayers Rock" since 2002
and stands as one of the few dual-named geographical features in
    Australia
 Uluru stands 348 metres above sea level at its tallest point (24m higher than
the Eiffel Tower), yet it resembles a “land iceberg” as the vast majority of its
mass is actually underground - almost 2.5km worth!
 Uluru is estimated to be around 600 million years old
 The greater Uluru area is considered a sacred site by native Aborigines, par-
ticularly the local Anangu tribe who are considered its traditional landown-
    ers
 Uluru was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site back in 1987
 The closest and largest town to Uluru is Alice Springs, which is around 450km
    away
 Uluru has one of the best sunsets in the country - in fact, it was voted in the
Australia's Top 10 Sunsets - due to the amazing red that comes from a
combination of the angle of the sun, minerals in the rock and the reflection
    of the surrounding soil

HISTORY OF MELBOURNE - part 5
In 1848, Charles Perry became the first Anglican bishop for Melbourne, and
James Alipius Goold became the Catholic Bishop of Melbourne.
With the arrival of Europeans in the area, the local indigenous people were
hard hit by introduced diseases, and their decline was hastened by
mistreatment, alcohol and venereal disease. There were also frontier conflicts
such as the Battle of Yering in 1840. Simon Wonga made moves to reclaim
land for Kulin people to settle on in 1859, but they were not successful until
1863 when the surviving members of the Wurundjeri and other Woiwurrung
speakers were given 'permissive occupancy' of Coranderrk Station,
Healesville and forcibly resettled.
In July 1851 the successful agitation of the Port Phillip settlers led to the
establishment of Victoria as a separate colony, and La Trobe became its first
Lieutenant-Governor. In 1851 the white population of the whole Port Phillip
District was still only 77,000, and only 23,000 people lived in Melbourne.
Melbourne had already become a centre of Australia's wool export trade.
A few months after separation, gold was discovered at several locations
around the colony, most notably at Ballarat and Bendigo. The ensuing gold
rush radically transformed Victoria, and particularly Melbourne. During land
speculation of the 1850s many stone and brick public and financial buildings
were built.
                                              COLLINS STREET, MELBOURNE, 1851
The discovery of gold led to a huge
influx of people to Victoria, most of
them arriving by sea at Melbourne.
The town's population doubled
within a year. In 1852, 75,000 people
arrived in the colony and this,
combined with a very high birthrate,
led to rapid population growth. The
concurrent dispossession of the
Aboriginal populations in those areas of inland Victoria which had not already
been cleared for sheep runs was equally rapid.
In 1853 work began on the Yan Yean Reservoir to provide water for
Melbourne. Piped water started to flow in 1857. Victoria's population reached
400,000 in 1857 and 500,000 in 1860. As the easy gold ran out many of these
people flooded into Melbourne or became a pool of unemployed in cities
around Ballarat and Bendigo. There arose a huge wave of social unrest urging
the opening of the lands in rural Victoria for small yeoman farming. In 1857 a
Land Convention was held in Melbourne. Later a provisional government was
formed by land hungry miners demanding land reform.

                WELSH RELIGIOUS BELIEFS
Religion has played a significant role in the shaping Welsh culture.
Protestantism, namely Anglicanism, began to gather more support after
Henry VIII broke with the Roman Catholic Church. On the eve of the English
Civil War in 1642, Puritanism, practiced by Oliver Cromwell and his supporters,
was widespread in the border counties of Wales and in Pembrokeshire. Welsh
royalists, who supported the king and Anglicanism, were stripped of their
property, incurring much resentment among non-Puritan Welsh.
In 1650 the Act for the Propagation of the Gospel in Wales was passed,
taking over both political and religious life. During the period known as the
Interregnum when Cromwell was in power, several non-Anglican, or
Dissenting, Protestant congregations were formed which were to have
significant influences on modern Welsh life.
The most religiously and socially radical of these were the Quakers, who had
a strong following in Montgomeryshire and Merioneth, and eventually spread
their influence to areas including the Anglican border counties and the
Welsh-speaking areas in the north and west. The Quakers, intensely disliked
by both other Dissenting churches and the Anglican Church, were severely
repressed with the result that large numbers were forced to emigrate to the
American colonies. Other churches, such as the Baptist and Congregational-
ist, which were Calvinist in theology, grew and found many followers in rural
communities and small towns. In the latter part of the eighteenth century
many Welsh converted to Methodism after a revival movement in 1735.
Methodism was supported within the established Anglican Church and was
originally organized through local societies governed by a central
association. The influence of the original Dissenting churches, combined with
the spiritual revival of Methodism, gradually led Welsh society away from
Anglicanism. Conflicts in leadership and chronic poverty made church
growth difficult, but the popularity of Methodism eventually helped establish
it permanently as the most widespread denomination. The Methodist and
other Dissenting churches were also responsible for an increase in literacy
through church-sponsored schools that promoted education as a way of
spreading religious doctrine.
Today, followers of Methodism still constitute the largest religious group. The
Anglican Church, or the Church of England, is the second largest sect,
followed by the Roman Catholic Church. There are also much smaller
numbers of Jews and Muslims. The Dissenting Protestant sects, and religion in
general, played very important roles in modern Welsh society but the number
of people who regularly participated in religious activities dropped
significantly after World War II.
