The work the Temple’s team has entirely over Zoom. done to help us prepare for Aseret Yemeni Teshuva as we strive for repentance and renewal was amazing. Melanie Baron reflected on her experience as one of three families who did a combined “Zoom Mitzvah”: “Looking back, we’re not as alone in Charlotte as we thought we were. Planning and executing A LOOK BACK: a shared Zoom Mitzvah created a bond between our three families, and the whole experience deepened our connection to clergy and HOLIDAYS AT TBE THIS YEAR our Temple family.” 1 For a High Holy Days season like no other, TBE’s staff pulled out all the stops to make congregants feel as connected as possible. WE ACT TOGETHER TEMPLE BETH EL’S COMMITMENT TO REPAIRING THE WORLD IS EVIDENT THROUGH THE MYRIAD ACTIONS AND LEARNING OUR CONGREGATION HAS UNDERTAKEN TOGETHER THIS PAST YEAR. MEET NICOLE SIDMAN Thanks to a generous grant from the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte’s Adaptation and Transformation Fund, Temple Beth El hired Nicole Sidman as our Social Justice Outreach Coordinator. Nicole has been part of our Temple Beth El community since 2017 when her family moved to Charlotte from New York. Nicole graduated from the University of Michigan Law School with a Juris Doctorate and has dedicated her career to social justice and organizational work. Among her roles, she has served as a volunteer attorney for the New York Civil Liberties Union and helped found the social justice committee at East End Temple, her previous synagogue in New York. Nicole can be reached at nsidman@templebethel.org
WE PLAY TOGETHER LIBERTY TEENS Kaya Nichols, LIBERTY Religious and Cultural VP Understandably, COVID-19 has affected the way that youth groups are operating. It has been difficult finding events that we can plan online, since DID YOU KNOW? so much of the magic that comes from these events is from the in-person interactions. However, the virtual programs I have attended and helped LIBERTY’s High Holy Day hunger relief plan have proved beneficial in maintaining strong connections within drive raised enough funds to provide LIBERTY (Life in Beth El Reform Temple Youth) and between the other over 100,000 pounds of food through youth groups in NFTY (North American Federation of Temple Youth). Second Harvest Food Bank of In May of 2020, when we were all getting the hang of online events, Metrolina! Thank you to those who LIBERTY and RALFTY (Temple Beth Or, Raleigh, NC) planned a joint participated in this critical campaign! havdalah and program. For the first time since I’ve been in NFTY, I got the chance to work with amazing teens from a different region than me, and I truly believe that COVID gave us this opportunity. Then, LIBERTY planned a joint havdalah and virtual co-event with KTTY (Kol Tikvah, Davidson, NC), the other North Carolina-based SAR (Southern Area Region) youth group. This was one of the only subregional events I’ve ever been to (or helped plan), and while we unfortunately had to do it online, the chance to work with friends from Lake Norman was a fantastic experience. While we don’t love the situation COVID put us in, we’ve been able to participate in joint programs and expand our relationships with youth groups that we may not have had the opportunity to interact with. We hope to continue to forge relationships with these youth groups even after the pandemic is controlled. HAVE YOU FOUND YOUR TRIBE? The expanded rollout of TriBEs (small groups at Temple Beth El) continues! We currently have 37 TriBEs and we aim to grow this important initiative even more throughout the coming year. TriBEs have been a focal point of continuity and community throughout the pandemic for many congregants, and we want you to be part of one too. If you have any questions about TriBEs or if you are interested in starting your own, please contact Andy Harkavy at aharkavy@templebethel.org.
SPICE IN THE TIME OF PANDEMIC Bob Wolf, SPICE Chair SPICE, Temple Beth El’s Senior Programs of Interest, Concern, and Engagement, like everything and everyone else, had to adapt to new and challenging landscapes this year. Despite the pandemic, we continue to provide rich programming twice monthly via Zoom, each session followed by breakout sessions for continued social interaction. Programs throughout 2020-2021 included Rabbi Geoffrey Mitelman and Rabbi Knight on “Has Science Replaced God?”; “From Berlin to Bernstein from Hammerstein to Brooks” with Alan Kaufman; “How Charlotte Became Segregated by Race and Class” with Dr. Tom Hanchett; and “Why is this Thanksgiving different from all Other Thanksgivings?” with Chef Alyssa; and “The Early Development of Charlotte’s Most Desirable Neighborhoods of Myers Park, Dilworth and Eastover” with Dr. Dan Morrill. We also ran a full season of SAGE, our in-depth look at a single topic, with Rabbi Knight covering the topic of “Combatting the Machinery of Hate: Anti-Semitism and Us.” We have continued to support efforts with TBE’s designated Title One school, Sterling Elementary, providing refurbished computers for deserving students and supporting teachers with needed web-cams. The program had a record-breaking year, delivering more computers than ever before. While our Senior to Senior program, which provides companionship for isolated seniors, has been affected by the pandemic, our volunteers stay in touch and stand ready to resume face-to-face contact as soon as possible. And we look forward to resuming our potluck dinners and other social gatherings as soon as we can. SPICE continues to be a vibrant force in the Metrolina and TBE senior Jewish communities. We look forward to continuing to bring joy, education, socialization, community spirit and Tikkun Olam and Tzedakah to all. THE PORCH Ginger Brock, Porch co-chair The pandemic has highlighted the importance of connection and community for all our well- being. The clergy have worked so hard to bring the spiritual life of Temple Beth El into our homes during the pandemic. The Porch events have supported this vital mission of upholding our community in these difficult times through reinforcing our connections, Jewish identity, and camaraderie. The Porch has supported Young Adults and Families with Young Children through various online programs. We had a very successful online trivia night that was well attended by TBE members. The online Tot Shabbats have allowed the very smallest members to participate in services and continue to grow in their Jewish learning. The Porch also hosted a very successful event, welcoming our new Rabbi, Beth Nichols! Throughout the long days and nights of 2020 and beginning of 2021, The Porch has continued to foster community and support to the greater Temple Beth El population. We have even hosted two in-person programs thus far: yoga, and a hike with Havdallah. We look forward to more opportunities to spend time together in-person in the coming months! BROTHERHOOD Philip Schreibman, Brotherhood Board Member COVID hit our tight knit Jewish community hard. Our Brotherhood board continues to search for ways to engage our members and remind us all why we are members in the first place: hanging out with other Jewish men, joining together for food and fellowship, promoting learning and Jewish literacy, and service to our community. The call to action was clear: provide a safe place for people to join, connect with others, and deliver some sense of normalcy in abnormal times. Some recent highlights: • In August, we invited renowned Wells Fargo economic advisor and TBE member Mark Vitner to speak about the COVID, the Election, the Economy and Where We’re Headed. Over 50 people joined our discussion. • In October, our Brotherhood hosted TBE member David Weinrib, MD, Infectious Diseases Specialist with Atrium Health, and Gibbie Harris, MSPH, BSN, RN, Mecklenburg County Public Health Director. We were thrilled to have such renowned experts in the field of disease at a time when so many Americans and congregants needed answers to questions about the Pandemic of our Lifetime. • In November, Jacob Diamond, Head Equipment Manager for the Orlando Magic, shared how a pro sports franchise operates in the midst of a pandemic. • In January, Rabbi Knight and Rabbi Nichols presented on Our New Normal As We Apply Ancient Wisdom in a Modern Crisis. • In April, Timothy Boyce joined us to present From Day to Day: One Man’s Diary of Survival in Nazi Concentration Camps. Recordings of these programs are available on the Brotherhood page of TBE’s website. As the pandemic persists, we’ll keep trying to deliver the good and provide great educational programs for Brotherhood members. Hope to see you there.
WE CARE FOR EACH OTHER FOR ALL OF THE CHALLENGING ASPECTS OF THIS YEAR, TEMPLE BETH EL’S CLERGY HAVE CONTINUED TO PROVIDE PASTORAL CARE AND COUNSELING TO OUR MEMBERS. OUR COMMUNITY CARES FOR YOU. WE ARE HERE TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER. CHECKING IN During the current year, two congregation-wide phone trees GESHER GOOD WORKS FUND ensured that every family in the congregation received phone ESTABLISHED TO SUPPORT NEEDS calls from staff or volunteers, checking in on their wellbeing. In AMONG CONGREGANTS AND THE some cases, these calls provided information that allowed for GREATER CHARLOTTE COMMUNITY clergy to follow up and assist where necessary. Toward the end of 2020, a congregant approached Rabbi Knight with an idea: what if there was a fund to provide grants to our community #TBECHALLAHDAY when there is a short-term need, like helping with a car payment until In March, #TBEChallahDay brought delicious, home-baked joy to unemployment payments kick in, or assisting with a move before a new every congregant, as a loaf of challah was left on their doorstep by job starts? This Fund has been set up as a spend-down account rather than an endowment, meaning that the full amount is available for distribution as needed. Recipients of Gesher Good Works Fund grants will be encouraged to make a reciprocal gift when they are back on their feet, and everyone is welcome to contribute to the Fund as well. We are grateful for the foresight and vision of this congregant, embodying the very essence of what it means to care for each other. HONORING LOVED ONES May their memories be a blessing: Unfortunately, a number of Temple Beth A small portion of the dozens of challah baked by Sheri Stock El members died due to COVID-19 and a greater number of Temple families had loved ones die due to the pandemic. COMING TO A MAILBOX NEAR YOU: MY TEMPLE COMMITMENT 2021-2022 HERE ARE SOME KEY UPDATES FOR THIS YEAR: • When creating the My Temple Commitment membership structure two years ago, our plan included shifting to an auto-renewal system, making it easier to continue membership year after year. This year we are taking the first steps toward auto-renewal, asking you to give TBE permission to continue charging your credit card year after year. • In response to increasing expenses, we are adding a 3.5% My Temple Commitment increase for the coming year. Sustainer levels are not increasing; however, Sustainers are encouraged to match the increase if possible. • We are asking families to submit new Commitment Review paperwork for the coming year if they require financial support for their Commitment. This new form will take into account all potential aspects of membership: Religious School, Hebrew High, B’nei Mitzvah fees, and My Temple Commitment. MY TEMPLE COMMITMENT TWO-STEP PROCESS FOR 2021-2022: 1. Receive informational letter in the mail (early June – please contact our office if it is not received by June 20) 2. Log onto ShulCloud and complete the My Temple Commitment form and/or Commitment Review. We encourage you to give TBE permission to continue charging your card year after year – this will be an option on the form. Questions? Contact Madeline White at mwhite@templebethel.org.
