The Breath of Winter
Winters white blanket covers the skies
Through the cool of the day a lonely
crow cries
There is a chill in the air as the moisture
hangs low
Your breath can be seen in a morning
hello

Silhouetted in the foreground stands
ghostly trees
There is not a breath here not even a
breeze
And the sun hides away behind the low
cloud
And Carnamah is hidden in an ominous
shroud

                Ranger Services and Emergency Management

The Shire’s existing Emergency Management & Ranger Services position has been
made redundant as a result of an organisational review, and ceases on 30 July 2021.

The function has been split in two and the following arrangements will be in place from
1 August 2021:

The ranger service will be provided by WA Contract Rangers. Should you have need of
a ranger in an emergency, please contact the Shire or call Matt Sharpe directly on 0459
678 154. Emergencies, in relation to the ranger, are defined as a request to attend by
Police; a dog attack; stock wandering on a thoroughfare; a snake in a building. Please
contact the Shire for all other situations.

Arrangements for the provision of emergency management services are almost com-
plete and further details will be provided once this is finalised.

Kind Regards,

Vin Fordham Lamont

becomes a factor. vegetables and flowers.
One of the biggest issues lately, with the rain, that I hear Banana skins are rich in
from gardeners are the amount of weeds appearing. I can potassium and besides

weed. The darkness prevents seeds emerging and the heat of
summer will often dry the weeds sufficiently to prevent
massive re-seeding issues.
Despite best efforts I have found that the weeds can still
germinate from a compost. You can also find that vegetable
seeds such as pumpkin and zucchini may do the same thing. I
always maintain it is how you deal with this that matters.
Weeds can be pulled out and added to composts again,
pumpkin seedlings and zucchinis can be replanted in a better
location. If you have the time to do this it is easy to manage
the garden. Time is always a factor though.
There are some downsides to composting. The process in
itself invites insects to appear in garden areas. They are
useful in a garden but can cause annoyance when they
venture into other spots. I have noticed a significant
increase in cockroaches around compost areas and this is a Contact
concern as getting them inside isn’t the best. You can fix onthemat@carnamah.wa.gov.au
this by encouraging frogs and other natural predators to the
garden, birds and spiders are also natural predators.
I have been adding cardboards to the compost too which
assists with recycling. Shredding the cardboard or paper
assists in breaking them down. Best thing to do is try it for
yourself and see if it is a practical way of recycling.

NORTH MIDLANDS PROJECT

They decided to follow along with all the caravanning fads
So Grandma and Grandpa have decided to become travelling grey nomads
They found the perfect time to pack up and get out of their town
They left NSW a day before they went into a two month lockdown

It was clear that Grandpa had never driven a caravan before
On the first part of the journey all Grandma did was swore
“There is only one way we are going to get there and safely arrive”
Grandpa is now the passenger as he let Grandma drive

Now driving like a grandma is a term we often hear
I don’t think she has ever learnt to get out of second gear
In Adelaide the police pulled her over and insisted an exam
As she was the one responsible for a 235km traffic jam

So to South Australia I had to fly to get the caravan
Because Grandma and Grandpa both earned a lifelong ban
We were so close to the border but Grandma stopped for the latrine
We were 20min too late and ended up in quarantine

Fourteen day in Bordertown stuck in a tiny caravan
Wasn’t on the itinerary or even in the plan
They even sent out some nurses to administer a Covid test
Roadhouse food and rest rooms are something I now detest

After fourteen day in hell we were finally ready to go
My sanity had become a thread that was decaying very slow
The car spluttered across the border as it had been sitting way too long
But finally we went across the boundary to the state which I belong

SA was far behind us and in Western Australia we drove
Then we saw some kind of commotion coming from up the road
We hit a line of traffic we were in for more delays
Then McGowan locked us down for another 14 days

                                                                           22

The distance between stations A and B is 148 km. An express train
left station A towards station B with the speed of 80 km/hr. At the
same time, a freight train left station B towards station A with the
speed of 36 km/hr. They met at station C at 12 pm, and by that time
the express train stopped at at intermediate station for 10 min and
the freight train stopped for 5 min. Find:
a) The distance between stations C and B.
b) The time when the freight train left station B.

Susan drives from city A to city B. After two hours of driving she
noticed that she covered 80 km and calculated that, if she continued
driving at the same speed, she would end up been 15 minutes late.
So she increased her speed by 10 km/hr and she arrived at city B 36
minutes earlier than she planned.
