adequate! housing,! safe! neighborhoods,! good! education,!
healthcare,!or!a!living!wage.!Some!of!our!friends!and!family!
members! have! experienced! unemployment,! debt,! lack! of!
quality!health!insurance,!or!even!social!isolation.
November!is!a!month!of!both!gratitude!and!giving.!Its!
a! time! to! buy! extra! groceries! to! $ll! food! pantries,! donate!
clothing! and! warm! goods! to! those! who! are! lacking,! make!

My!high!school!chemistry!teacher!was!a!great!educator.!I!never!really!gave!him!a!chance,!though,!
as!his!passion!for!teaching!chemistry!was!eclipsed!by!my!disregard!for!learning!it.!During!class!once,!
Mr.!Lloyd!rushed!to!the!back!room!to!investigate!an!explosion!wed!all!heard.!He!returned!with!just!
the!neck!and!screw!cap!of!a!large!glass!jar.!Ive!been!trying!to!get!this!jar!open!for!years,!he!said.!
And,!Its!open!now
Ah,!Mr.!Lloyd !I!wish!I!knew!then!what!I!know!now!about!the!passage!of!time.!At!67,!I!get!it!
more! now! than! I! ever! did! at! 17.! While! you! told! us! as! much! and! o%en! my! friends! and! I! never!
listened.!Perhaps!we!just!werent!ready to!listen!back!then.!But!undeterred,!you!still!stepped!in!front!
of!the!class!and!rubbed!your!hands!together,!and!told!us!over,!and!over,!and!over!again,!We!have!so!
much!to!learn,!and!so!li'le!time.
My!friends!and!I!yawned,!of!course,!but!our!behavior!got!even!worse.!Not!only!did!we!not!listen!
to!Mr.!Lloyd,!we!mocked!him.!And!the!best! or!worst,!I!suppose! mock!of!all!is!the!one!I!still!recall!
$%y!years! later.!I!didnt!coin!the!phrase! this!honor!goes!to!my!friend!Carl! but!I!repeated!it!so!
many! times! in!high! school! and! later!to! my!friends! in!college! and!then!even!to! my!corporate! world!
colleagues! that! I! made! Carls! Mr.! Lloyd-inspired! epiphany! my! own:! Weve! learned! so! li'le,! in! so!
much!time.
Both!maxims!come!to!mind!as!we!wind!down!the!liturgical!year!and!the!readings!again!turn!to!
the!end!times.!We!get!a!foreshadowing!of!the!Parousia!$rst!from!the!prophet!Daniel,!who!speaks!this!
word! of! the! Lord:! it!shall!be!a! time! unsurpassed! in!distress! since!nations!began!until!that! time !
Many!of!those!who!sleep!in!the!dust!of!the!earth!shall!awake;!some!shall!live!forever,!others!shall!be!
an!everlasting!horror!and!disgrace
"en! we!get!another!foreshadowing! from!Jesus!himself!in!the!Gospel:! In!those! days! a%er!that!
tribulation!the!sun!will!be!darkened,!and!the!moon!will!not!give!its!light,!and!the!stars!will!be!falling!
from!the!sky !And!then!they!will!see!the!Son!of!Man!coming!in!the!clouds!with!great!power!and!
glory,!and!then!he!will!send!out!the!angels!and!gather!his!elect!from!the!four!winds !Oh.!And!per!
Jesus!also,!of!that!day!or!hour,!no!one!knows,!neither!the!angels!in!heaven,!nor!the!Son,!but!only!the!
Father.
Uncertainty.! Get! used! to! it.! But! theres! a! di*erence! between! the! early! Christian! communities!
uncertainty!upon!hearing!Jesuss!end-times!message!millenniums!ago,!and!our!own!uncertainty!upon!
hearing!it! again! in!2021.!"e!early!Christians!thought!that!Jesuss!return!was!imminent.!As!in,!
any day now#!And!as!such,!Mr.!Lloyds!We!have!so!much!to!learn,!and!so!li'le!time!could!have!been!
their! mantra,! too.! But! over! 2,000! years! later,! we! just! dont! see! Jesus! as! coming! anytime! soon.! Hes!
coming,!sure.!But!not!for!a!long!time.!At!least!so!it!would!seem,!given!history!and!all.!Hence,!weve!
nothing! to! worry! about! for! now.! Ah,! Mr.! Lloyd ! And! Carl! was! way! more! spot-on! than! he! knew.!
Weve!learned!so!li'le,!in!so!much!time.
