CLOSE UP

     The new LGV Océane railway
     connection: bringing New
     Aquitaine closer to Paris !

As of 2nd July 2017, the new high-speed railway connection
will be bringing Paris closer to several New Aquitaine cities :
1hr18 min between Paris and Poitiers (as opposed to 1hr36min,
currently) and 2hrs04 min between Paris and Bordeaux
(currently : 3 hrs14 min). The New TGV Océane train will travel
at a speed of 320kms/hr.
33 return trips will be available between the Ile de France region
and New Aquitaine: 27 between Paris and Bordeaux. 17 of these
connections will be direct. It will take 35 minutes to travel
from Bordeaux to Angoulême and one hour from Bordeaux to
Poitiers.
With several additional high-speed rail services (1 to 2 stopovers)
via Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, Poitiers, Angoulême or Libourne,
this is Europe’s largest railway construction project. Not only
will it contribute to enhancing our region’s attractiveness, it will
also simplify intra regional travelling.
More comfortable, more laidback, more useful and more
connected… the TGV Océane’s interior design will be a
combination of wood, leather and fabric. Baggage space will be
handier, a special new area will seat two passengers travelling
with their bicycles; wheelchair-friendliness will be developed
and special attention paid to new technologies: WiFi equipment,
free access to an internet portal (via WIFI SNCF), screens
equipped with SIVE onboard travelers’ information which will
broadcast live “normal situation” information (stopovers, speed,
travel time) as well as disrupted situation information (causes,
impacts…)

Coral reefs : a thousand year-old constructions in danger

With a biodiversity comparable to that of tropical forests, coral reefs
are true oases in the middle of our oceans. They play an essential role
in the protection of our coasts, offering food resources to millions of
people, and are an indisputable asset for tourism. These living structures
have defied time yet are in great danger due to human activity. Current
environmental issues have caused major damage which coral reefs may
not be able overcome. Is it possible to dispose of coral reefs while
protecting this natural heritage ?

Delmas and Vieljeux: 2 names connected to the history of the harbour’s
economy. The exhibition opened on 8th November at La Rochelle’s
Maritime Museum. It recounts the 150 year history of the Delmas-
Vieljeux maritime company, closely linked to the history of the seaside
town of La Rochelle.
The Delmas- Vieljeux company was created in the late 19th century and
marked the town in several ways. Several Delmas and Vieljeux family
members became famous for their political and activist engagements.
Emile Delmas and Léonce Vieljeux both became mayors of La Rochelle.
Furthermore, the Delmas-Vieljeux company played an important part in
the development of La Pallice port activity, France’s 6th largest port, as
well as the Chef de Baie fishing harbour.
