Presented by Dr. Marc-André Sirard, Université Laval, Québec, Canada
The ovary is sensitive to the metabolic environment and the growing follicle will respond to negative
energy balance during the post-partum period. Our analysis indicates that the nutritional environment,
especially vitamins, may have an effect on the follicular physiology and consequently on oocyte quality.

Presented by Dr Mario Binelli, University of Florida
Biochemically well-defined oviductal and uterine luminal environments are required for successful pre-
implantation embryo development in cattle. Developmental needs of the growing embryo/conceptus are
expected to change over time. In this presentation, we will discuss specific mechanisms that must be in
place to execute the dynamic changes needed to generate and modify the luminal molecular
compositions required to support early pregnancy events.

cryopreservation survival rates have been identified. In addition, the genetic background is also an
                       important factor to consider.

10:30 AM – 12:00 PM Student/Technician Session 1: Damage prevention at storage and transportation of frozen bovine
                       embryos
Presented by Dr. Angelika Stock, Services mobiles de theriogenologie-Chambly-St. Hyacinthe,
                       Chambly, Quebec
The quality and therefore the success of implanting frozen bovine embryos can be greatly diminished by
careless storage and wrong handling during their sale and transport. This presentation will discuss simple
but important steps to be considered.

Presented by Dr. Gilles Fecteau, Université de Montréal, St-Hyacinthe, Canada
The IVF calves are representing some particular challenges. It is very important for the practitioners to
anticipate some of the common problems to be prepared to respond promptly. As this can be viewed as a
problem, it also represents a great opportunity to offer high quality of medical services for the neonatal
calves. The presentation will cover some aspects where the veterinarians can make a difference in the
                       outcome.

Presented by Dr. Claude Robert, Université Laval, Québec, Canada
The goal is to brush a portrait of genetic selection through the traditional means to estimate breeding
values as well as the new revolution that has arisen with genomics. It will also bring a perspective view of
the next wave that is emerging behind genomics that is epigenomics.

  8:00 AM – 10:00 AM Student/Technician Session 2:
                       i) Ultrasonography and endocrine parameters in recipients with successful embryo transfer.
The decision to transfer an embryo or not at the time of recipient presentation is not always easy. This
presentation summarizes the literature on endocrine parameters such as progesterone and estradiol
levels at time of transfer as well as exogenous hormone application at time of transfer. Ultrasonographic
observations of ovaries and uterus including some own data will be discussed.
ii) Sanitary considerations at collection, search, freezing and transfer of bovine embryos.
Recent studies showing that certain microbes may survive the freezing process of embryos and cause
early pregnancy failure make it seem important to review and reconsider our current sanitary protocols
during embryo collection until transfer. Recent literature, current washing and freezing protocols as well
as additional techniques will be discussed.

1:15 PM – 2:15 PM SESSION 9: Impact of early life nutrition on the sexual development and fertility of cattle
Presented by Dr. David Kenny, TEAGASC, Ireland
The presentation will cover recent research into the effect of early life nutrition on the sexual maturation
of both bulls and heifers including physiological, endocrinological and molecular based responses, age at
onset of puberty and subsequent fertility. It will also touch on the influence of pre-natal maternal
nutrition on the reproductive development of their progeny as well as the efficacy of some dietary
supplementation strategies to augment post pubertal fertility.

2:15 PM – 3:15 PM SESSION 10: The au courant developments in sex sorted semen and applications in embryo
                       technology programs
Presented by Dr. R (Vish) Vishwanath, STgenetics, Navasota, TX, USA
It is fair to say that sex-sorting of semen has “come of age” as it has entered a new era with advanced
biochemical techniques and high throughput machinery. This has made the technology easily accessible
with the performance of the product improving continually. The original application portal for sex-sorted
semen was through IVF platforms but over time the dairy and beef industries have adopted this
technology widely in AI programs. Current progress in the application of sex sorted semen in embryo
                       technology programs will be discussed.

3:30 PM – 4:30 PM SESSION 11: The potential pathogenic role of Ureaplasma diversum in bovine embryo transfer
Presented by Dr. Bronwyn Crane, Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island,
                       Canada
Ureaplasma diversum is a known commensal of the bovine reproductive tract and has been associated
with vaginitis, spontaneous abortion, infertility and neonatal death. This pathogen has a known ability to
persist on embryos following standardized embryo flush washing procedures. This presentation will
discuss the epidemiology of U. diversum as well as case reports and investigations into the potential for
spread of the organism associated with embryo transfer.

4:30 PM – 5:30 PM SESSION 12: Early pregnancy losses in dairy cattle: importance, predisposing factors, and
                       implications for management
Presented by Dr. Eduardo de Souza Ribeiro, University of Guelph, Canada
The average conception risk in North American dairy herds has been suboptimal and stagnant for many
years. Early pregnancy losses are substantial and contribute importantly to low conception risk and
consequent reproductive inefficiency of lactating cows. These losses can be minimized by reducing the
prevalence of predisposing factors and by genetic selection for fertility traits.
