to provide urgent care for those who need it throughout this period.
This booklet explains how and when to access these services and others over
the festive period.

Public holidays
Ill health is unwelcome at any time of year but particularly during holidays. We
know it’s easy for health to drop off your to-do list when you’re really busy, so
we’ve put together this short guide to help you stay well.
But if you do feel unwell, check your symptoms and find out what to do next
at www.nhsinform.scot/self-help-guides
Know your GP practice and pharmacy details
On public holidays, your GP practice and pharmacy opening hours are likely to
be different from normal.
It’s important to know this information so you can you order and collect any
repeat prescriptions you may need in plenty of time.
5SELF CARE
Check your medicine cabinet
Make sure you have some over-the-counter (OTC) remedies for
common seasonal illnesses in your medicine cabinet.
Things to have in your medicine cabinet include:
PP Paracetamol and ibuprofen for pain relief (check the label or
speak to your pharmacist to check it’s suitable for you)
PP Anti-histamines to help allergies
PP Anti-diarrhoeals and oral rehydration sachets for diarrhoea
PP Indigestion remedies such as an antacid
PP Mild laxative for constipation
PP A first aid kit
PP Medicines specifically for children (your pharmacist can
advise on the most suitable ones to keep in the house).
Remember that medicines go out of date, so don’t overstock
your medicine cabinet. Always follow the advice on the pack,
and if your symptoms continue (or are severe) get further advice.

6PHARMACISTS
Prescriptions
If you are on routine/repeat medication, you should ensure that you have
sufficient supplies well in advance of the festive period.
If you forget to obtain a prescription for a repeat medication and run out of
important medicines, you may be able to get help from your pharmacy. Under
the Urgent Supply arrangements, pharmacists may be able to issue you with
a further cycle of a previously repeated medicine without having to get a
prescription from your GP. If you receive stoma products from your pharmacy
or other supplier and/or receive supplies such as continence products and
welfare food from community services, you should ensure you have sufficient
supplies as you may encounter difficulties in obtaining these over the festive
period.
Minor Ailments
Pharmacists routinely provide advice and supply over the counter remedies
for a wide range of ailments. In addition, the NHS Minor Ailment Service is
available from all community pharmacies in Scotland.
You qualify for this service if you are registered with a GP surgery in
Scotland, don’t live in a nursing or residential care home and were previously
exempt from prescription charges under age, illness or income grounds.
Once registered, you can have a consultation with a pharmacist without
an appointment. Your pharmacist will offer you advice and may supply an
appropriate medicine to treat your symptoms free of charge.
Pharmacy First
Pharmacy First is designed to utilise the accessibility and expertise of
pharmacists to treat certain conditions where the patient’s ability to
access prompt treatment aids recovery. Pharmacy First is available from all
community pharmacies in NHSGGC and provides access to treatments for
uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women aged 16 - 65 years and
impetigo for those over two years of age. Patients must be registered with
a GP Practice in Scotland and would normally be expected to attend the
pharmacy to allow the pharmacist to assess the symptoms before deciding on
whether to offer advice, treatment on the NHS or to refer to another clinician.
Please go to page 24 for detailed information on
the pharmacy opening hours over the festive period
7Community Pharmacy Flu Immunisation Service
For most, influenza (flu) is an unpleasant but usually self-limiting ailment.
However, for older people and those aged between 18 and 65 with an ‘at risk’
clinical condition, flu carries a considerable risk of developing into a serious,
more difficult illness to treat.
Flu can circulate at later times depending on the level of flu-like illness in the
community. The protection offered by a ‘flu jab’ significantly reduces the risk
of catching flu in the first place.
Most community pharmacies offer easy access to the ‘flu jab’ to eligible
patients, on the NHS, over the winter period. An extended programme
provides an opportunity for patients in these two categories to be vaccinated
as long as they haven’t already had the vaccine or made an appointment with
their GP surgery to have this done.
Locations of pharmacies participating in the flu service are listed on the
website at www.nhsggc.org.uk/communityflujab and offers the convenience
of a drop-in service and additional opportunities for eligible patients to access
free NHS flu vaccinations.
Please go to page 24 for detailed information on
the pharmacy opening hours over the festive period
8GENERAL PRACTITIONER SERVICES
(GPs)
Your GP practice will close on 25th and 26th of December and again on
1st and 2nd of January.
If you become unwell and cannot wait for your surgery to re-open then you
can get assistance by calling NHS 24 on 111. Alternatively, you may choose to
seek treatment from a local pharmacist.
Emergency GP out-of-hours service
Emergency GP out-of-hours services are provided for all practices in NHS
Greater Glasgow and Clyde. To access the service, please call NHS 24 on 111.
They help you get the right care, at the right place, at the right time
9MINOR AND MAJOR EMERGENCIES
Minor Injury Units (MIUs)
For minor injuries such as cuts that need stitches, suspected broken bones,
sprains and minor burns, go to one of our Minor Injury Units (MIU). You are
likely to get the fastest treatment for these injuries here as you will not have to
wait for people with serious injuries and conditions to be treated first.
Your assessment will be carried out by a team of highly experienced staff,
led by Emergency Nurse Practitioners giving you quick access to health
information, advice and treatment. Treatment includes being able to arrange
x-rays if required, apply plasters or splints and stitch and dress wounds.
What can be treated at a Minor Injuries Unit?
Types of injuries treated can include:
Injuries to upper Cuts and grazes Sprains, bruises Stings and bites
and lower limbs and wounds – human, animal
and insect
Burns and Abscesses Minor head Broken noses
scalds and wound injuries and nosebleeds
infections
Broken bones Eye problems
- our experienced staff can arrange - minor eye infections, scratches or
x-rays and apply plaster if required something stuck in your eye
10Adult MIUs are for people 16 years of age and older. For MIUs for children
aged 15 or under, please see our If Your Child Needs Emergency Care,
Know Where To Go section on pages 12-13.
Where to find your local MIU
We have three dedicated MIUs in NHSGGC
• New Stobhill Hospital and New Victoria Hospital, open 9am to 9pm
every day of the year
• Vale of Leven Hospital, open 8am to 9pm every day of the year.
Outwith these times you should contact NHS 24 on 111.
If you have a minor illness such as a stomach upset, cough or running a high
temperature then self-care, pharmacy or your GP is the answer. You should not
go to an MIU for treatment. An MIU does not deal with illnesses.
Emergency Departments (A&Es)
Within NHSGGC there are five Emergency Departments that remain open all
year round to treat patients who have a serious injury or medical emergency.
They are at: the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Royal Hospital for
Children, Glasgow Royal Infirmary, the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) in
Paisley and Inverclyde Royal Hospital in Greenock.
It is important that Emergency Departments are reserved for their intended
purpose and only used for serious injuries and major emergencies. For
everything else there are local hospital based Minor Injury Units (MIUs),
GP services (including out-of-hours via NHS 24) and your local pharmacy.
If you think it is an emergency phone 999.
For minor injuries such as cuts (including ones that need stitches),
suspected broken bones, sprains and minor burns go to one of our locally
based Minor Injury Units.
To find your nearest Emergency Department or Minor Injury Unit
simply go to www.nhsggc.org.uk and enter your postcode
on the ‘Find your nearest’ section
11IF YOUR CHILD NEEDS EMERGENCY CARE,
The Emergency Department of the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC), the
Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) in Paisley and Inverclyde Royal Hospital
(IRH) in Greenock, are open all year round to treat children with a medical
emergency or serious injury.
Major Emergency
If your child is seriously injured or becomes so unwell
that you think it is an emergency you should dial 999.
The Scottish Ambulance Service will take your child to
the RHC unless they deem it more appropriate to go
to a closer Emergency Department.
Minor Illness
0-15 Years
If it is a minor illness such as a stomach upset,
cough or running a high temperature then self-care,
pharmacy or your GP is the answer. (See page 2 in this
booklet for more information).
If your child is unwell, you should NOT take them
to an MIU for treatment. An MIU does not deal with
illnesses.
Minor Injury
If your child has a minor injury such as a cut (including
one that may require stitches) a minor burn or a
suspected broken bone there are a range of options for
speedy treatment depending on his or her age.
