Week 10, Semester 2How to ensure that your child is SCHOOL READY?
Tips on Starting The Primary School Adventure
Parent-Child Activity Book from MOETips on Starting The Primary School Adventure 1. Get Ready for School 6. Team Up With Teachers 2. Practise Routines 7. Let’s Help Out at Home 3. New Places, New Faces 8. Time to Let Go 4. We Can Do This, Together 9. Show Interest in Your Child 5. Be a Great Role Model 10. Every Child is Unique
Get Ready for School / Practice Routines • Discuss with your child how they can prepare for school the night before. • What should your child do before he / she leaves home? • Time – What time is bed time? What is the time to wake up? What is the time to leave home for school? • Pack according to the timetable • Buy food, eat a small meal within 25 minutes • Show interest and check in on your child daily (how was their day, what did they learn, homework, assessments etc.) • Decide together as a family what after school routines would be like. Draw up a schedule together.

A Study by DQ Institute in 2017 IN FRONT OF SCREEN 46 - Number of hours 12-year-olds spend a week before a screen 24 - Number of hours nine-year-olds spend a week before a screen SOCIAL MEDIA AND CHAT APPLICATIONS 77% - 12-year-olds who actively use social media and chat apps 55% - Nine-year-olds who actively use social media and chat apps OWNERSHIP OF MOBILE DEVICE 70% - 12-year-olds who have their own mobile device 52% - Nine-year-olds who have their own mobile device
Consequences / Effects • Prior studies have consistently found excessive usage of mobile devices to be associated with poorer sleep quality which affects mood and mental capacity, and can lead to weaker school performance. • National University of Singapore (NUS) lecturer Kelvin Seah said excessive usage of devices could "alter sleeping habits, as (people) stay up later into the night to use them". • Assistant Professor Ryan Hong, from the NUS psychology department, said that over-usage may even lead to addiction. Children may feel uneasy without their devices, he said. "The prolonged use of mobile devices can also impede children's ability to connect socially with people offline.”
