For my PhD I chose to work with the Climate Change Cluster’s
Future Reefs team at UTS. Coral reefs are highly fragile
ecosystems at the front-line of climate change, and there’s
still so much we don’t understand about them. They provide
so many ecosystem services, food, and income support
for millions of people, but they’re also rapidly degrading.
Future Reefs tackle the most urgent issues in coral reef
research, with a focus on the ‘bigger picture’. They conduct
cutting-edge fieldwork, whilst collaborating with the wider
community. It’s great to contribute to the field as part of such
a progressive team!
The overall goal of my PhD is to understand the nature and
extent to which scleractinian corals are able to thrive at their
southerly limits within Sydney Harbour. This coral population
is particularly important because of its potential to be a ‘coral
refuge’, as more northerly coral populations migrate as waters
become warmer.”

Indigenous student Joel Cama considered dropping out of a
degree in International Studies because he wasn’t sure he
could afford it.
“Moving from Lithgow to Sydney was a big wake-up call for
me,” he says, “My parents aren’t that well off… and it can be
challenging for many students to keep financially afloat.”
Joel now receives a scholarship from UTS, and he is quick to
recognise the transformative effects it has had on his life. “As
soon as I got it, every worry just dropped and I could focus on
what I needed to do. I’m nowhere near as stressed,” he says.
Importantly, Joel can also see how the scholarship has given
him a clearer vision of what he wants to achieve. “I want to
work in elite sport,” he explains. “I want to use sports as a
platform to correct social injustices. Someone once told me
that we’re getting help now so that we can help others later on.
I’m 100 per cent behind that.”

LEIGHTON BLOCH,
Bachelor of Construction Project Management,
Hansen Yuncken Scholarship Recipient
“I began my career as an apprentice draftsperson with a
civil engineering consultancy, which involved undertaking a
diploma at TAFE. Once I completed it, I was able to apply to
UTS and received a year’s worth of exemptions. UTS tends
to cater better for working professionals, both in the subject
timetable and geographic location. Plus, Construction
Project Management students seem to find work quite
quickly: the majority of my classmates have cadetships by
year two or three. Because of this you can begin growing
your professional network quite early on. Students in the
course also earn a pretty decent wage when compared to the
internships in architecture or engineering. Plus studying with
others working in the industry, and hearing about their work
experiences, is very inspiring.
In 2015 I received the Hansen Yuncken Scholarship, which was
a huge accomplishment considering it was my first year at
uni. They’ve also offered me a cadetship, which I am looking
forward to commencing once I have progressed through the
course a bit more.” DAVID FAHEY, OAM,
Master of Local Government,
UTS Institute for Public Policy and Governance
Postgraduate Scholarship Recipient
“I want to be a driver of policy, procedures and good
governance. I want to be hands on as a Councillor, and as one
of the governing body of my Council, I want to be involved in
the shaping of the future of my community in an effective
manner. To me the onus is on the elected members to go and
get educated so you can get things done and serve the people
who elected you better. Education for elected members
should be compulsory.”
“I’m very appreciative of the fact the Scholarship was awarded
to me; it means a lot to me personally and it was an affirmation
that I’m on the right track with my thinking. It will also assist
in the cost of study and traveling to Sydney from remote and
regional New South Wales.”

Graduate Certificate in Professional Legal Practice,
Faculty of Law Equity Scholarship Recipient
Alison Whittaker, a Gomeroi woman from Gunnedah in NSW, has just graduated from
UTS Law and is about to attend prestigious Harvard University to aide her research on
sentencing reform for Indigenous women. In the beginning, however, she only had $600
to her name, no income stream, and was not sure how she would balance work and study.
It was then that she applied for and was awarded the inaugural Law Equity Scholarship
at UTS.
“We all did a dance around the house. It was such a relief. My life would have been very
different had I not received the Law Equity Scholarship”. Alison believes that she couldn’t
have achieved everything she’s done without it, including graduating with first class
honours. During her time at UTS: Law she set-up the Indigenous Collective which provides
support and advice to Indigenous students on campus. This is when she realised the
importance of the balance between law and her Aboriginal community. “The UTS Law
Equity Scholarship made my undergraduate study possible, for one. It bought essentials for
study and living in the first four years of my undergraduate coursework.”
