23-28 SEPTEMBER 2019 Celebrating Cinema on Dartmoor - Chagford Film Festival
The idea of Chagford hosting a film
festival was born during a pub
                                   conversation amongst friends -
eight years on, little did we realize
what a huge success the annual
                                 event was set to be!

Over the years the festival has gone from strength to strength, we have had many dedicated
people on the committee, each one has given their time, talents and energy completely free.
Without these people the festival would never have happened.

Our aim has always been to have some fun, to invest in the economy of Chagford and to have
some more fun. And that we have done – remember the Batmobile? A mechanical elephant
followed by a Bhangra dancing troupe? A World War One plane? And this year will see the
return of the ever popular Flaming Feathers dancing girls to help us celebrate our closing
extravaganza.

We are hugely grateful to the National Lottery Community Fund for their generous support
of this year’s Festival. Their grant, as well as helping run all aspects of the Festival, has enabled
us to make 10% of tickets to each event, available free of charge to disadvantaged people
across the area.

We also give a huge thanks to all our Sponsors, Advertisers,Volunteers and the residents of
Chagford who help to make this a unique event.

‘I hope we will attract people from all over Dartmoor and further afield. It really is worth a trip to
such a beautiful town, right in the heart of Dartmoor, to see a film, take part in a workshop, have a
special meal or even meet an Oscar winner!’

Enjoy the amazing 2019 Chagford Film Festival.

MILES AHEAD - MILES DAVIS
     2.00pm Jubilee Hall
     £7.00 Certificate 15
Miles Ahead, inspired by events in his life, is a wildly entertaining, impressionistic, no-holds barred
portrait of one of the 20th century music’s creative geniuses, Miles Davis, featuring a career defining
performance by Oscar nominee Don Cheadle in the title role.
In the midst of a dazzling and prolific career at the forefront of modern jazz innovation, Miles Davis
(Cheadle) virtually disappears from public view for a period of up to 5 years in the late 1970s. Holed
up in his home, he is beset by chronic pain from
a deteriorating hip, his musical voice stifled and
numbed by drugs and pain medications, his mind
haunted by unsettling ghosts from the past.
A wily music reporter, Dave Braden (Ewan
McGregor) forces his way into Davis’ house
and, over the next couple of days the two men
unwittingly embark on a wild and sometimes
harrowing adventure to recover a stolen tape of
                                                    the musician’s latest compositions.

AMAZING GRACE
     4.00pm Jubilee Hall
     £7.00 Certificate U
“Amazing Grace” is two days of Baptist church
condensed to 90 minutes and injected directly into
your soul. Shot in 1972 over a 48-hour period in Watts’
New Temple Missionary Baptist Church, this stirring
document captured the live recording of the most
successful gospel album in history, Aretha Franklin’s
Amazing Grace. At the height of her powers, with 11
number one singles and five Grammys to her credit,
she returned to the environment and the music that
honed her voice and nurtured her soul. The result
became her biggest seller, earning a Grammy and quite
possibly more than a few conversions.

                                                         experiment by filmmaker Mick Csaky
                                                         and opera director Elijah Moshinsky
revolves around a staging of Mozart’s

                               What Makes A Movie Magical?

reveal the secret that makes a movie magical.
It’s this secret that has made movies like Star Wars, E.T., Avatar, The
Lord of the Rings and Bohemian Rhapsody such huge box office hits
                               and multiple Oscar winners.
The secret is called The Hero’s Journey. It’s a mythical structure that
each of the writers and directors of these movies has purposefully woven into their scripts. This is
also the reason these films, and many like them, impact us so deeply. It’s because they portray the
timeless human journey of transformation, which is there for all of us to embark upon.
During his workshop, Darren
will elaborate on The Hero’s
Journey, and then screen Bohemian
Rhapsody.You’ll experience
first-hand how The Hero’s
Journey has been artfully woven
into this magnificent film.
After the screening, Darren will

Journey from watching the movie.
By the end of the workshop you’ll develop a deep discernment of what makes a movie magical.
You’ll also learn how you can use Bohemian Rhapsody, and other great films, as sources of inspiration,
to purposefully utilise The Hero’s Journey to transform your own life.
Darren Eden brings 20 years of experience teaching The Hero’s Journey, and his passion for movies
to ChagFilm. His forté is to use movies as teaching tools within his trainings. He relishes in his unique
ability to serve people to harness the magic they were moved by in a movie, to bring to life the Hero
within themselves.

ROCKETMAN is an epic musical fantasy
about the incredible human story of
Elton John’s breakthrough years. The
film follows the fantastical journey of
transformation from shy piano prodigy
Reginald Dwight into international
superstar Elton John. This inspirational
story -- set to Elton John’s most beloved
songs and performed by star Taron
Egerton -- tells the universally relatable
story of how a small-town boy became
one of the most iconic figures in pop culture. ROCKETMAN also stars Jamie Bell as Elton’s longtime
lyricist and writing partner Bernie Taupin, Richard Madden as Elton’s first manager, John Reid, and
Bryce Dallas Howard as Elton’s mother Sheila Farebrother.
There will also be a Q&A session with Oscar winning film editor Chris Dickens:
“It’s a pleasure to come return to the wonderful Chagford film festival this year.
It’s even more exciting to be showing ‘Rocketman’ here with a little bit of rock and
                         roll glamour and fantasy.
I love this festival, it’s growing from year to year so forget about Cannes,Venice
and Berlin, this is the one to be at!
I’m sure it will be a lot of fun..”
