Strong actor/singer who moves well. Vocal range: Tenor/Baritenor (Bb2 to sustainable Bb4/C5 (or A4)). Ability to croon or falsetto a plus, but otherwise high range should be full voice.
Bernardo - The leader of the Sharks; tough, commanding, patriarchal young man; looking for fairness and justice. Strong actor/dancer. Vocal range: Baritone (A2 to Eb4). Maria - Intelligent, wholesome, young lady; looking to better her life in America. Strong actor/singer who moves well. Vocal range: Soprano (Bb3 to C6). Anita - Passionate, loving, matriarchal woman who loves her American way of life. Strong actor/singer/dancer. Vocal range: Mezzo/Belter (F3 to sustainable E5 (and passing F). Doc - The owner of the drugstore; a father-like figure to Tony. Intelligent, worried, supportive. Strong actor. Non-singing role. Lieutenant Schrank - A tough, dangerous cop who will do anything to solve a case. Strong actor. A non-singing role. Officer Krupke - Goofy, cranky, and slow. Seeking a strong comedic actor. A non-singing role. Glad Hand - A hopeful and optimistic social worker. Seeking a strong comedic actor. A non- singing role. The Jets - Action - Combustible, explosive. Vocal range: Baritone (B2 to Eb4 (passing low G) Other Sharks (Pepe, Indio, Juano, Luis) - Strong actor/dancers. Vocal range: Baritone (B2 to Eb4 (passing low G) The Sharks’ women (Rosalia, Consuelo, Estella, Francisca, Teresita) - All strong actor/singer/dancers. Rosalia vocal range is Mezzo or Soprano/belter (A3 to D5). All others are Mezzo soprano (F3 to F#5). Ability to hold harmony is crucial. The Jets’ women (Graziela, Velma, Clarice, Pauline) - Strong actor/dancers. Vocal ranges are variable. Jane Austen’s Emma: The Musical Directed and Choreographed by Valerie Rachelle Music Direction by Brad Carroll Randall L. Jones Theatre Contract Dates: May 8 – Oct 7 2023 Emma Woodhouse - a 21-year old aristocrat; naïve, conceited, and self-serving – but in the most delightful way. She has a warm hard and good intentions. Vocal range: F#3-D#5 Mr. Woodhouse - Emma’s father; old beyond his years and crotchety to a hilt. Lovable. Harriet Smith - Emma’s “recently acquired” best friend; socially awkward and quirky. Wide- eyed, optimistic, and free of malice. Vocal range: Soprano with pure tone (A3-A5).
Mr. Knightley - Emma’s wealthy neighbor; wry and sarcastic on the surface, he is a man of impeccable moral standards and sincere affection underneath. Vocal range: Bari-tenor (G2-Ab4). Miss Bates - Emma’s old friend; chatty but lovable. Vocal range: Bb3-E5 Mrs. Bates - Miss Bates’ mother; she isn’t as hard of hearing as her daughter would like to believe Jane Fairfax - Miss Bates’ niece; talented, elegant, and soft-spoken. Keen observer of the world and the people around her. Vocal range: A true soprano (Bb3-B5) Mr. Elton - the vicar of Highbury; thinks very highly of himself. Incapable of tempering his opinions with any sense of modesty or thinking about anyone’s feelings other than his own. Vocal range: Bb2-G4 Mrs. Elton - his wife; her exaggerated mannerisms and lack of decorum make her a true match for Mr. Elton. Ensemble singing. All vocal ranges considered. Robert Martin - a local farmer. Boyish and well-meaning. Optimistic and not very self-aware. Vocal range: Bb2-Ab4 Miss Elizabeth Martin - his sister; sweet and supportive. Ensemble singing. All vocal ranges considered. Mr. Weston - Emma’s calm and well-mannered neighbor; married to Emma’s oldest friend. Ensemble singing. All vocal ranges considered. Mrs. Weston - his wife; Emma’s former governess, best friend, and favorite commiserator. Ensemble singing. All vocal ranges considered. Frank Churchill: Mr. Weston’s son; polished, but mischievous. Jones Theatre Contract dates : May 8 – Sept 8 2023 Lena Younger (Mama) - female-presenting; early 60s, strong, graceful. Her wit, faith, and grace make her beautiful. Walter Lee Younger - male-presenting; Lena’s son; 30 to 40 years old; a dreamer, volatile, mercurial, passionate, full of dreams Beneatha Younger - female presenting; Lena’s daughter; about 20 years old; bright, intelligent, passionate (like her brother), and ambitious Ruth Younger - female-presenting; Walter’s wife, about 30 years old; a loving mother to her son and works hard to be the supportive wife to a man who is sometimes hard to love Travis Younger - (a child; will be cast locally) Joseph Asagai/Moving Crew - male presenting; 20s; self-assured, confident, proud Nigerian man; charming and affable George Muchison/Moving Crew – male presenting; 20s; “proper”, studious, upper middle class, practical Bobo/Moving Crew - male presenting; 30s and up; self-effacing, dreamer, easily manipulated, a follower
