NUservicesforstudents Nursing student earns humanitarian award Chante Ellis, a nursing student in Nipissing’s Scholar Practitioner Program, has earned a prestigious 2018 Sopman Humanitarian Award from the University Health Network. Ellis is one of 14 nursing students at the University Health Network that was nominated. She is in her first year of the 2-year Scholar Practitioner Program, an innovative second degree nursing program for university graduates looking to pursue nursing at the bachelor of science level. “When I learned about the award, I was definitely in shock, then felt extreme gratitude that my professor and preceptor recognized my ability to provide compassionate care in practice,” said Ellis. “Awards that commend student nurses are invaluable because they encourage the development of exceptional future nurses.” The awards were established by the Sopman family nearly four decades ago to recognize emerging physicians, surgeons and nurses who, in addition to their academic and clinical excellence, have demonstrated profound compassion toward their patients and colleagues. Every year The Office of Indigenous Initiatives co-hosts a welcome powwow. Dancers, students and community are invited to participate in this celebration of song and dance. 21

NIPISSING STUDENTS RECEIVED $1.19 MILLION IN STUDENT RESEARCH GR ANTS 2014 – 2019 Turning ideas into reality For award winning business student Jeremy Butterworth, the Introduction to Entrepreneurship course he took in 2017 instantly helped him realize his dreams. The third-year student turned his course-work into a full-fledged business opportunity, with external funding allowing him to make a reality out of his idea for a fitness-based app, named Flex. “My professors were incredibly helpful in pushing me to flesh out all aspects of the business plan, including financial forecasting and competitor analysis. They really helped me synthesize the plan to become a professional product, and also helped me to find grants that were available for young entrepreneurs. I highly recommend this course to any students interested in entrepreneurship.” Jeremy is now working with a company to develop the app and is planning to launch Flex this year. Faculty research at Nipissing contributes toa better understanding of o ur communitiesand ourselves. great research = first rate teaching Dr. Carly Dokis, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, is working with Anishinaabe communities in Northern Ontario on the ways that risk calculation around water quality is constructed, and how water is known and experienced by community members. One of the strengths of this research program, funded by SSHRC, is the adoption of an exploratory methodology established cooperatively with Dokis First Nation, which involves exchanging accounts about a common theme in the form of storycircles. Storycircles bring together an interdisciplinary team of knowledge holders and expertise to better understand the subjective and affective consequences of water quality risks for Indigenous peoples in Canada – an issue of direct importance to Indigenous communities, policy-makers, scholars, and the general public. 29
