DIVERSITY
THROUGH
CRISIS
The COVID-19 pandemic was a confronting experience that forced organisations to rethink their focus.
Previous crises taught us that D&I usually recedes as a strategic priority for organisations during pressing
times, and yet, doing so may place them at a further disadvantage. Organisations with ample diversity
and inclusion initiatives were able to respond to the crisis quickly and more effectively,
and are recovering faster.*

AHRI’s Diversity and Inclusion Conference 2021 will bring together some of the foremost experts
in D&I who will share their valuable data and experience on key themes like hybrid environments,
working with trauma, racism in the workplace, creating psychologically-safe workspaces and
COVID-19’s impact on D&I. With the tools and insights you’ll gain from the event, and the ideas you
will exchange with other D&I practitioners and peers, you’ll be able to build greater strategic inclusion,
diversity and equity in your own organisation, and help drive stronger business recovery.

This year’s Diversity and Inclusion Conference will be
held simultaneously at both the International Convention
Centre (ICC) Sydney, and online to give delegates the
Conference experience they choose.

 10.30 – 11.30 1A
Racism in sport has for too long been a reality. Incidents of discrimination and vilification have been
widely publicised in recent times and are prevalent across many sporting codes. What is being done
to address this issue, what has worked, what more needs to be done and can sport in Australia

Indeed has once again joined with YouGov to conduct one of the most comprehensive surveys on
diversity and inclusion in the workplace in Australia—and the results might shock you. Join Jay Munro,
Indeed’s Senior Manager, Country Marketing, where he will unpack the current state of D&I in Australia
today, why 62% of people feel the need to hide their true identity at work*, and what you can do to
help your employees feel more included and supported at your organisation.

                        • Jay Munro, Senior Manager, Country Marketing, Indeed
*The research in this report was commissioned by ThatComms Co on behalf of Indeed and conducted by YouGov.
The study was conducted online between 11 - 17 February 2021, involving 2,060 participants.

                  2B
Creating psychological safety in the workplace during times of trauma

In 1999 Harvard’s Amy Edmondson coined the term psychological safety in a journal article exploring
its relationship to learning and performance. The term and notion of psychological safety has now
been recognised as being crucial for the performance of teams and in today’s COVID world it has
never been so important. Sharing insights and practical examples, this discussion will explore how
companies can create the psychological safety that employees need in times of anxiety, depression,
                        fear, and stress.

The impact of the COVID-19 crisis on diverse employees and how organisations can respond
 1.30 – 2.30 3A

The challenges diverse employee groups continue to face more than a year after the COVID-19 crisis
emerged are immense. LGBTQ+ employees, people of colour, older workers and working parents
have all been severely impacted with the pandemic only further amplifying earlier inequities. So, what
can organisations do to meet rising employee needs and expectations? A panel of experts will share
insights to better understand the challenges diverse groups face in the COVID-19 environment and
                        what actions organisations should take.

                        • Leah Ruppanner, Associate Professor in Sociology and Co-Director of The Policy Lab,

3B Inclusive leadership and active allyship: The power of diversity and action

Inclusive leaders are critical in helping organisations support and empower diverse employees,
customers, talent and ideas. Two key capabilities of being an inclusive leader are the ability to
recognise bias and take action to interrupt it, along with the ability to express humility and empathy.
Two of Australia’s foremost thought leaders in workforce inclusion, Ian Bennett and Sam Turner will
discuss how organisations can develop more inclusive leaders, promote active allyship and thereby
enhance the diversity, equity and performance of employees and teams.
