J
ohn Lennon famously wrote, “Life is what happens to you whilst you are
busy making other plans”. There is a risk that we can become so
preoccupied with the everyday that we lose sight of the big picture and
before we know it, the years have flown by. Judaism is a “goal orientated” religion.
We recognise that no-one lives forever and that we are here to make life
purposeful. Our year is punctuated with “stop and think” moments, challenging us
to transcend and survey the landscape. In fact the term for a festival is “moed”.
This word means “an appointed time” but it also means “an encounter”.
The festivals are an invitation to connect with our inner selves, to encounter
spirituality and to re-think our direction. So with apologies to John Lennon I
would like to adapt that famous phrase to describe Judaism. “Life is what happens
to you, if you are busy making plans”. As we approach this festival season, let’s use
the opportunity to pause and reflect. That way we can take control of our own
destiny to fashion a meaningful present and a promising future.

About Seed Seed specialises in Jewish Family Education. Our mission is to equip parents to raise their children with a sophisticated understanding of their Judaism, and a wholesome belief in themselves. We aim to strengthen the family unit through formal and informal study, positive Jewish encounters and a shared enjoyment of Jewish life and values. We have offices in London and Manchester and work with both families and individuals in schools, in our centres and beyond. Our programmes include: Early Years programmes for mums, including the ‘Babies & Bagels’ mother and baby groups as well as mother and toddler groups introducing parenting skills and fundamental Jewish concepts in a warm and sociable environment. Early Years programmes for dads, with the launch of the ‘Dad’s Time’ programme in Manchester to complement the ‘Babies & Bagels’ programme for mums. In-School Family Education programmes, providing formal and informal programmes in Jewish primary schools to help mums and dads in supporting the Jewish education of their children, such as the Hebrew Reading Crash Course, Everyday Parenting course and family arts and crafts activities around Jewish themes. 3 PROSPECTUS SEPTEMBER - DECEMBER 2019 www.seed.uk.net
Post-primary school programmes, including a parenting course with a focus on teenagers and the popular LINKS Bat Mitzvah Programme for mothers and daughters. Residential weekend seminars for families, featuring educational and inspiring lectures and workshops for adults and a full range of children’s activities and programmes. Trips abroad to Israel and Poland, incorporating education-based touring and study opportunities not available in the UK. These trips are focused around specific groups of participants - families, mothers and daughters on our Bat Mitzvah Programme, fathers and sons on our barmitzvah programme as well as specific trips giving time-out in Israel for women One-to-One learning centres for adults, where Seed matches up suitable volunteers to participants in order to share educational resources on a one-to-one basis. The Seed Shul in Edgware, which currently has 60 member families. SPECIAL EVENT - 9/11 SURVIVOR Miracles and Fate on 78 With International guest speaker Ari Schonbrun Thursday 7 November 8.00pm at Seed Entrance by donation Contact: aedwards@seed.uk.net On September 11th, 2001, Ari Schonbrun went to his office at Cantor Fitzgerald - the Wall Street firm that occupied the top five floors of Tower One - and he happened to be on the 78th floor changing elevators when the first plane hit. In the midst of the smoke and chaos, Ari found a fellow employee who was terribly burned and who needed his help to walk her down 78 flights of stairs. Of the 662 Cantor employees on the upper floors in the World Trade Center that day, only four survived. Everyone else was killed. Ari believes that G-d was looking out for him that day. There were many large and small miracles and if there’s anything that Ari does know it is how that day ended up being a day of rebirth. Miracles and Fate on 78 reveals the power of creating meaningful connections to transcend the differences that often polarise and divide us from one another.
