North CarolinaFrom Sharon’s Desk...
The calendar says fall is quickly approaching and even though our days are getting shorter the temperatures are still plenty warm for me.
I have needed a sweatshirt only once so far but I am looking forward to more cool days ahead. Like us, many of you are very busy with your
fall calving season. It is always exciting to see those new baby calves arrive and to see the results of the time spent last winter with AI and ET
work. When your time comes, I hope you all have successful calving season.
The North Carolina Angus Association has attempted to get back to normal this year. The 37th Annual Spring Fever Sale was a big success
thanks to the hard work of the consignors and the great buyers. Check out the Spring Fever Sale article for all the details. Also take note of
the latest sale information from sale manager Zach Moffitt for the April 23, 2022 sale. Since the winter Annual Meeting had to be cancelled
due to Covid-19 it was held in conjunction with the field day in June at Windy Hill Farms in Ramseur, North Carolina. It was a great day and
Mike Moss along with his son Will did an outstanding job of showcasing their farm and cattle along with the educational program. Thank you
to Roy Swisher and Mark Wilburn for all their help in putting together the program. The association was able to conduct its annual business
meeting that day as well. During the meeting new officer and directors were elected to serve the association. Learn more about the field day
in its magazine article. A special thank you to the allied industry and field day sponsors: Farm Credit, Clifton Seed, Sink Farm Equipment,
Carolinas Animal Health, Deal-Rite Feeds, Purina and The Barn Loft. The 2022 Annual Meeting will be held on February 12, so go ahead
and save the date on your calendar.
Many NCAA members have sales schedules for this fall and winter. Be sure to take note of their featured ads in the magazine with all the
information on times and locations for their events.
Hope to see you all soon.

Fall 2021
4 North Carolina Angus NewsPresident’s Message
Dear Angus Breeders and Friends,
I am pleased to be able to pin my first “President’s Message” to our membership and I’m looking forward to getting to know each of you,
as we work together to continue to build on our strong legacy to strengthen our Association. I would like to thank our Past President, Dr.
Eugene Shuffler, DVM for his leadership of our Association over the last two years, which occurred during some of the most challenging
times due to Covid-19.
Your Officers and Board of Directors are grateful for the opportunity to serve our members and we are committed to lead and enable our
North Carolina Angus Breeders Association Mission, which is:
To Provide Leadership, Service and Educational Programs For the Promotion of North Carolina Angus Cattle
To enable this Mission, we are continuing to implement our Strategic Plan that was developed from member input several years ago.
The Strategic Plan includes:
1. Strengthen the relationship and engagement of our Association with the commercial cattlemen
2. Recruit new members and develop and mentor new leaders for our Association
3. Promote and increase the value of NC Angus cattle, including through Association sponsored sales.
Much work and success has already been achieved with several initiatives within the Strategic Plan. A huge “thanks” to all that have made this happen! Our long-term goal is
to continue to implement tactics that deliver greater value for membership in our Association and to promote NC Angus cattle across the USA. Our NC breeders continue to
increase the quality of their herds and it’s time to showcase broadly just how much our genetics can improve herds across the USA.
A key challenge for us in the coming year will be to target the 1st Strategic Initiative listed above…to strengthen our engagement with the commercial producers in our state.
Commercial producers are key customers for most of us and understanding their needs and providing quality genetics that increases their productivity and profitability is
critically important. Understanding what tactics our Association can deploy to support our membership in this effort will be a key feature of our activities going forward.
This is a great time of year for many of us! For those of us with fall calving, we get to see the “fruits” of our planning over the past two years as those calves hit the ground.
For those of us with fall/winter sales, we are showcasing our genetics to potential buyers not only in NC, but across our region and nationally. Can’t help but smile, as our
passion for Angus cattle is on full display this time of year just as the autumn colors start to show!
May all your calves hit the ground alive, may your A.I./ET success rate be greater than 70/50 percent, and may at least one of those registered Angus bulls, or females that
you sell this fall far exceed your expectations on how much they bring!
I look forward to working with you to make our Association strong!
Mike

Windy Hill Farms in Ramseur, North Carolina served as host for the 2021 North Carolina Angus Association Field day
and annual business meeting. Mike Moss and his son Will had a wonderful location for the event. Angus members and cattle
producers from across the state came out to learn more about marketing Angus genetics and to view Windy Hill Farms.
To kick off the day, Mike Moss welcomed everyone and gave a brief history of the farm. Bryan Blinson, Executive Direc-
tor of the NC Cattlemen’s Association then presented an overview of current cattle industry topics. Next the group moved out
to the farm for two educational sessions. The first session featured Reese Tuckwiller, AAA Regional Manager and Zach Moffitt,
Zach Moffitt Marketing discussing how to effectively capture quality videos and photos of sale cattle. Carolina Scarlett presented
her heifer as Reese and Zach discussed time of day, location and the best equipment for getting the perfect shot. The second
session featured Mark Wilburn, Uwharrie Ridge Farms and Charlie Thomas, TX Enterprises. Their topic was getting cattle ready
for a sale with proper nutrition and grooming. Mark gave tips on feeds and feeding timelines to have cattle in optimal condition
for any sale. Charlie discussed clipping and grooming to make cattle look their best for sale day. Jonathan Scarlett provided a
heifer for Mark and Charlie to use during their discussion.

The NC Junior Angus Association served a wonderful beef brisket lunch and attendees were able to interact with the event
sponsors during this time. A special thank you to the sponsors: Carolina Farm Credit, Cape Fear Farm Credit, Ag Carolina, Sink
Farm Equipment, Clifton Seed Co., Carolinas Animal Health, Deal-Rite Feeds, Purina and The Barn Loft.
The 2020 Annual Meeting of the NC Angus Association was held after lunch. Committee reports were presented but due
to Covid-19 many of the normal association events were cancelled or postponed last year. A special presentation was made to
outgoing President Dr. Eugene Shuffler for his dedication and service to the NC Angus Association for the last two years. During
the meeting a new group of NCAA board members were selected by the membership. Greg Collins, Louis Fulcher, Scott London,
Roy Swisher and Michael Wyatt were elected to serve on the NCAA board for three years. The board of directors also held a brief
business meeting during the event to elect new officer. New officers are Mike Moss – President, Callie Carson – Vice President and
Kim Starnes – Treasurer.
The afternoon featured speaker was Dr. Lee Duckworth III of Grassy
Valley Angus in Greeneville, Tennessee. Dr. Duckworth discussed the history
of Grassy Valley Angus and how the farm and cattle have progressed over the
last forty-five years. He stressed the need for consistency in the total operation
of the farm from the cattle they produce to how they interact with their custom-
ers. Grassy Valley held its 28th Annual Production Sale in April of 2021 so
the Duckworth family has a strong understanding of marketing Angus cattle
and we really appreciated him sharing his years of experience. All of the
presenters then gathered for a panel discussion to summarize the topics of the
day. Attendees asked lots of questions and it was a great way to conclude the
educational sessions.
A very informative tour of Windy Hill Farms rounded out the day. Mike
and Will took the group around the farm and everyone was able to see their
outstanding cattle, facilities and draw some valuable knowledge on pasture
management from Mike, who has a Ph.D. from North Carolina State University
in plant pathology.
Thank you to the Moss family for working so hard to host a wonderful
field day. Also thank you to annual meeting committee chairman Roy Swisher
for pulling together all the presenters for the day. It was a great field day and
everyone left with new knowledge to take home and incorporate into their
operations.

Spring Fever Sale
Sharon Rogers, Executive Secretary NCAA & Zach Moffitt, Sale Manager
The 37th Annual North Carolina Angus Spring Fever Sale was held
April 24th at the Shuffler Farm Sale facility in Union Grove, NC. There
were some clouds and showers that day but it did not deter the buy-
ers from coming out to see the fine offering in the sale. Over seventy
live and frozen lots were sold for a sales gross of $227,800 with an
average of $3,631 on the fifty eight live lots. The sale was man-
aged by Zach Moffitt Cattle Marketing & Consulting of Concord, NC.
The consignors along with Zach worked really hard showcasing the
females before and during the sale. The offering included cow/calf

pairs, bred heifers, open heifers, NC Elite heifers and show heifer
prospects plus semen and embryos. There were lots of visitors on Friday afternoon to view the cattle and as always
people arrived early on Saturday morning to see the cattle and to visit with their fellow Angus enthusiasts. The crowd
filled the sale arena and at noon Colonel Mike Jones kicked off the very success auction. Thank you to the North Caroli-
na Junior Angus Association for preparing lunch and to the North Carolina Angus Auxiliary for decorating the sale ring.
The North Carolina Angus Elite Heifers were the highlight of the sale. To
qualify for the Elite Heifer status the females must meet a stringent set
of performance and breeding guidelines. The consignors continue to
make the extra effort to have their top quality heifers meet the standards
and this year twenty-two of the bred heifer consignments were awarded
Elite Heifer status. The Elite Heifers sold for $79,900 for an average
of $3,540. Lot 45 selling for $8,250 was the high selling Elite Heifer.
She was a Bar R Jet Black 5063 daughter bred to the popular Mead

For many years the fall bred cows with big stout calves have been the
reason buyers come to the Spring Fever Sale and once again there
was a strong set of these pairs. The top fall pair, selling for $10,000,
was Lot 10 and 10A consigned by Crescent Angus Farm of States-
ville. Lot 10, CAF Sabrina DD 3897, was a power packed daughter of
Jindra Double Vision with S Chisum 6175 on her maternal side. This

North Carolina Angus News 1738th Annual Spring Fever Sale
April 23, 2022
By: Zach Moffitt, Zach Moffitt Cattle Marketing & Consulting
North Carolina Angus Association members we are headed into fall calving
season as I write this. Such a thrilling time of year. A time when the next
generation hits the ground and excitement for planning the next mating for
those same cows. This brings me to think about the Spring Fever Sale. It
was such an honor and blessing to be asked to manage the 2021 event.
This sale has been going on in North Carolina for thirty-seven years. To be
able to take part in it and work for the hometown crowd was a great privilege I will never forget. The consign-
ors did an awesome job and many stepped outside of their comfort zones in an attempt to meet the market
demands. It paid off! The cattle were in great shape, a large majority were confirmed AI bred to top bulls
from around the country, and we had more NC Angus Elite Heifers than ever before. Cattle were purchased
from buyers here in North Carolina and also South Carolina, Florida, Virginia, Minnesota, Texas, and New
York. We had active bidders from Alabama, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and more! The sale grossed $227,800,
which included the semen and embryo lots. We averaged $3,631 on 58 live lots. We had a new location in
2021 as well, the Shuffler Sale Facility in Union Grove, North Carolina worked great for both the cattle and
the people.
With that being said, we hope you will consider participating in the Spring Fever Sale in 2022. Be on the
lookout for consignment nomination forms via email from Sharon at the North Carolina Angus office later this
year. We will be looking for elite fall bred heifers, fall pairs, open spring yearling heifers, show prospects,
and spring pairs. There will be a few updates to the sale guidelines for 2022, so take note of these when they
are published.
A quote from an older cattleman that I do business with, “Always sell the ones it hurts to sell, they do the best
boy. Remember, no one wants your culls!” Words to live by from a good cattle producer. Contact me or a
member of the sale committee with any questions regarding the 2022 Spring Fever Sale, 336.736.6340.

A Fourth Generation Farm Focusing on Producing Angus Genetics for the Real World
By: Sharon Rogers
Randall Smith is the fourth generation of his family to live and work the farm in Snow Camp, North Carolina now known as Smith
Angus Farm. Randall’s great grandfather purchased the farm in 1910 and today it operates on two hundred acres of owned and one
hundred fifty acres of leased land. The farm has seventy head of registered Angus cows.
The farm successfully combines poultry and Angus cattle production to make it sustainable.
Randall’s father built the first poultry houses in 1977 and Randall built four more in 1986. He currently
grows organic broilers and calls the poultry his 9 to 5 job with the cattle being an excellent compan-
ion enterprise. Initially, Randall raised commercial cattle but in 2001 he began to transition his herd
into registered Angus. He decided to start his registered herd because he felt the commercial cattle
were too commodity driven and he wanted to produce a product where he could be more in control
of the marketing. Randall selected the Angus breed because of the strong presence of the American
Angus Association, Certified Angus Beef and the growing
popularity of the breed at the time.

In addition to being able to use his time for both farm en-
terprises, the poultry also offers the benefit of supplying litter for fertilizer. Randall uses the litter
on both pastures and hay fields. He likes that it is slower release and saves him money. Randall
partners with a neighbor to make haylage from the forage grown by using the litter. He is a
proponent of haylage because of its harvesting flexibility and the utilization by the cattle. His
pastures are fescue but he does plant some annuals which he uses for grazing and haylage.
Over the last few years, Crabgrass has become one of his favorite forages for grazing. The barn at Smith Angus Farm. The original

commercial producer in his area. He feels this helps him to have cattle which will perform in many
environments. Smith Angus Farm has three priorities for all their cattle. They must shed their hair, have good feet and good dispositions. The
farm has a fall calving season from September to November. The calves are weaned in May with some sold through a BQA sale. The bull
calves selected for The Pounds and Profit Sale are developed on the farm and they receive 1% of body weight in feed, along with fescue
pasture and haylage. The goal is for the bulls to gain three pounds per day. The heifer calves are hand fed to make them easier to work
with during breeding time.
For his A.I. program, Randall utilizes the 7-day CO-Synch + CIDR for mature cows and the 14-day CIDR protocol for heifers. Each
female is bred A.I. once and then bulls are turned in. When selecting his A.I. bulls, he talks with other breeders and looks for bulls with
balanced EPD’s. Now he is also paying attention to the $M, maternal weaned calf value index. There are three females in his donor lineup
for 2021. URF Sarah 1614 a Rampage x Sarah Y79 daughter from Uwharrie Ridge Farms. A SydGen Enhance daughter, SAF Lady 818
and SAF Miss Pearl 1816 a SydGen Black Pearl 2006.
I asked Randall, what are three things that help to make Smith Angus Farm a success and he said. “First, my wife Kelli is always will-
ing to help me. Second, I live in a great community with good neighbors. Third, the cattle and the
poultry farms working together. I was blessed to have
forward thinking parents who taught me a good work
ethic and made it possible for me to be here on the
farm.”

North Carolina Angus News 19NC Junior
Angus Members Shine in 2021
The North Carolina Junior Angus Association had a great summer. They started by hosting the 2021 Eastern Regional
Junior Angus Show (ERJAS) at the Western North Carolina Ag Center in Fletcher on June 25-28. The show hosted 140
junior members and almost 190 head of cattle from over fifteen states! Madeline Bauer the Events Coordinator for the
American Angus Association reflected back on the 2021 ERJAS and shared that “it was a huge success. My favorite part
of the event was the opening ceremonies. It was great to see everyone back together and under one roof, who were all
there for one reason: Angus cattle. It was refreshing to have a sense of normalcy back into events again.”
The show wouldn’t have been possible without the many sponsors and volunteers. A special thank you to the Ball Family
and crew from Appalachian Sitework Inc. for all their help getting the grounds ready for the show.
Also, a special thank you to Kyle Mayberry and Biltmore Estates for hosting both our cattle judging contest and the Queens’
Luncheon. The events at Biltmore seemed to be a real treat for our out-of-state guests and NC folks alike. Jera Pipkin,
Communications Specialist with the American Angus Association shared that “It was an excellent opportunity for our mem-
bership to experience agriculture at the Biltmore. We appreciate their partnership, and more importantly, appreciate the
avenue to experience one of North Carolina’s historical sites. The tour and activities off the grounds were a great way for at-
tendees to learn practical application pieces, leverage previous knowledge and experience a unique perspective to Angus
and agriculture in general.”
The 2022 Eastern Regional Junior Angus Show will be the 50th show and will be held June 16-20 in Chatham, Virginia at
the Olde Dominion Ag Complex (ODAC). We would love for you to join us for “50 & Fabulous”.
The NC Juniors had a great week July 11-17 in Grand Island, Nebraska for the 2021 National Junior Angus Show! North
Carolina may be small in number but represented well…and we couldn’t be more proud! Throughout the week, each state
is evaluated by judges on their Herdsmanship including how clean the cattle and stalls were if youth were present in the
stalls, etc. North Carolina placed first for states that exhibited 15 head of cattle or less!! Justin Wood represented North
Carolina in the showmanship contest; an honor that each junior only has once in their entire lifetime! Justin also completed
his term on the National Junior Angus Association Board as the Leadership Director. Even though Justin completed his
term, North Carolina is still represented on the National Junior Angus Board of Directors, as Marcie Harward was elected
to serve for the next two years.
Congratulations to Mary Wood who was selected as one of the five young women competing for the title of 2022 Miss
American Angus during the American Angus Association Annual meeting in November. Good luck, Mary!
North Carolina was also well represented in the individual contests throughout the week. Nate Bowman won first place
in the Junior B extemporaneous speaking contest. Lynae Bowman placed first in senior skillathon and second in senior
cattle judging, which when combined with her written test score from the quiz bowl competition gave her enough points
to take home the title of Senior Stockmen. Taylor Glover and Thomas Smith both earned their gold awards as seniors.
Several of our youth that are enrolled in college were blessed with college scholarships. Justin Wood received the DeEtta
Wood Memorial Scholarship, Mattie Harward the Angus Foundation Richard L. Spader Scholarship, and Lynae Bowman
and Marcie Harward both received an Angus Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship.
Mark your calendars for the 2022 National Junior Angus Show to be held in Kansas City, Missouri July 2-9.
