APA Michael Shannon Research Award

Details: This award will be granted to the best abstract in the areas of
pharmacology/toxicology, drug reactions/events, substance use, environmental health, disaster
preparedness/response, and emergency medicine. Trainees and junior faculty are especially
encouraged to apply for this prestigious award.

This research award is in memory of the life achievements of Michael Shannon, MD, MPH,
(1953 –2009). Dr. Shannon was a professor at Harvard Medical School. He was the first African
American to be named a full professor of Pediatrics at the institution (2004). Dr. Shannon was
also the first African American to serve as a division chief at Children's Hospital Boston and
served as chief of both the emergency medicine and clinical pharmacology departments. He
was considered the preeminent pediatric toxicologist in the world. He was a prolific writer,
publishing more than 50 peer-reviewed articles in major scientific journals. He was lead editor of
one of the authoritative texts of medical toxicology, Haddad and Winchester’s Clinical
Management of Poisoning and Drug Overdose, 4th Edition, published in 2007. He was also
Medical Editor-in-Chief of ToxED, and Board Co-Chair of that publication.

The application involves the following:

   completion of their fellowship or last training and must indicate status on application.
 The nominee must be the first author of the abstract.

A committee from the Academic Pediatric Association selects the winning candidate and the
award is presented during the platform session in which the abstract presentation is
scheduled. The winner will also be invited to apply to attend the APA Environmental Health
Scholar’s Retreat.

APA Student Research Award

Details: The Academic Pediatric Association annually honors students engaged in pediatric
research. These awards are designed to recognize research excellence by a student in the
fields of general pediatrics (including public health, epidemiology, health policy, and
underserved populations), health services research, education, adolescent medicine, child
abuse, developmental/behavioral pediatrics, emergency medicine, and hospitalist medicine. The
goal is to encourage pediatric trainees to pursue careers in academic general pediatrics.
Awardees will be selected based on the quality of their submitted PAS abstract.

   MD/PhD and PhD Students
    Eligibility Criteria: Student must submit and present abstract prior to the student receiving
    his/her MD/PhD or PhD degree
   Medical Students
    Eligibility Criteria: Student must submit and present abstract prior to the student receiving
    his/her MD degree.
   High-School and College Students
    Eligibility Criteria: Student must submit and present abstract prior to the student receiving
    his/her BS/BA degree

The application involves the following:
 Check the appropriate box in the PAS abstract submission program and complete the online
   application form.
 Include a brief statement on the nominee’s involvement in the research and abstract. .
 Currently a student and will not have graduated from the specific degree-granting program
   prior to the PAS Annual Meeting.
 Upload your CV
 The nominee must be the first author of the abstract, and the abstract must be accepted for
   presentation and presented at the PAS Annual Meeting.
 Abstract and supplemental materials must be received by the PAS abstract submission
   deadline.

A special subcommittee of the Research Committee of the Academic Pediatric Association
selects the winning candidate, and the award may be presented during the APA Research
Committee.

APA Joel Alpert Award

Details: The Joel Alpert Award was established in 2016 by the Academic Pediatric Association
to honor research that helps to improve the health of underserved children through service,
education or advocacy. The Award is supported by donations from Joel's many colleagues and
friends.
Applicant must be a current APA member to be considered for this award.
A special subcommittee of the Public Policy & Advocacy Committee of the Academic Pediatric
Association selects the winning candidate, and the award may be presented during the Platform
Session in which the abstract presentation is scheduled.

APA Ludwig-Seidel Award

Details: This award recognizes the abstract that represents the best research project in
pediatric emergency medicine in which a PEM fellow is a lead author.

The application involves the following:
 Check the appropriate box in the PAS abstract submission program and complete the online
   application form.
 The nominee must be the first author of the abstract.
 Upload a 500-1,000-word expanded version of the abstract. The overview should include
   the project’s rationale, method of implementation, and evaluation. There should be some
   discussion of the project’s importance and potential impact. During the judging process
   strong emphasis is placed on the extent to which the process is innovative, and the degree
   to which there is an objective evaluation component.
 Abstract and supplemental materials must be received by the PAS abstract submission
   deadline.

A committee from the Academic Pediatric Association’s Emergency Medicine SIG selects the
winning candidate and the award is presented during the APA Emergency Medicine SIG
Session.

APA Ray E. Helfer Award for Innovation in Pediatric Education

Details: This award will be granted to the best medical education abstract by a non-trainee
APA member which meets the criteria for creativity/innovation and impact on pediatric
educational practice. Either the first or last author must be a current member of the APA to be
considered for this award. The abstract also must be submitted to the topic area “Medical
Education.” If the first author is a trainee, please see the APA Trainee Award for Innovation in
Pediatric Medical Education.

A committee of the Academic Pediatric Association selects the winning candidate, and the
award will be presented to the author at the session (Platform or Poster) in which the abstract
presentation is scheduled.

Details: This award will be granted to the best medical education abstract by a trainee (high
school/college student, medical student, resident, fellow, post-doctoral student/fellow or allied
health trainee) which meets the criteria for creativity/innovation and impact on pediatric
educational practice. The first author must be a trainee to be considered for this award. At
least ONE author on the abstract (trainee or faculty) must be a current member of the APA. The
abstract also must be submitted to the topic area “Medical Education.” If the first author is not a
trainee, please see the APA Ray E. Helfer Award for Innovation in Pediatric Medical Education.

A committee of the Academic Pediatric Association selects the winning candidate, and the

SPR House Officer Research Awards
Details: The Society for Pediatric Research annually honors house officers engaged in
pediatric research. These awards are designed to encourage pediatricians in training to pursue
careers in academic pediatrics. Winning candidates are selected based on the quality of the
work presented in the abstract.

Eligibility Criteria: House Officer must submit and present the abstract prior to the
completion of residency.

Candidates must fulfill the following conditions:
    Complete the online application form and submit their abstract and supplemental
      materials by the abstract submission deadline.
    The applicants need to describe their contribution to the project when asked to
      provide “brief description of the work performed”.
    Applicant must be a House Officer or Resident

Details: The Society for Pediatric Research annually honors fellows engaged in pediatric basic
research. Winning candidates are selected based on the quality of the work (basic research)

The Fellows’ Basic Research Awards are designed to encourage pediatricians in training to
pursue careers in academic pediatrics.

The David G. Nathan Award in Basic Research by a Fellow was established in 2000 by the
colleagues, trainees, and friends of Dr. Nathan to honor his achievements in every aspect of
academic pediatrics. The winning candidate is chosen from the SPR Fellows’ Basic Research
Award applicants whose abstract has been accepted for a platform session .

The Basic Research Awards for Fellows, sponsored by the SPR Junior Section was
established in 2013. The winning candidates, who must be a member of the SPR Junior
Section, are chosen from the SPR Fellows’ Basic Research Award applicants.

Eligibility Criteria for Awards: Fellow must submit and present the abstract prior to the
completion of the fellowship.

Candidates must fulfill the following conditions:

The Clinical Research Awards for Fellows, sponsored by the SPR Junior Section, was
established in 2013. The winning candidates, who must be members of the SPR Junior Section,
are chosen from the SPR Fellows’ Clinical Research Award applicants.

Eligibility Criteria for Awards: Fellow must submit and present the abstract prior to the
completion of the fellowship.

ASPN Fellow Research Presentation Award
Details: Fellows who are first author on an accepted abstract, currently enrolled in an ACGME-
approved pediatric nephrology training program are eligible to receive a $100 honorarium.

ASPN Trainee Research Awards

Details: Two ASPN Trainee Research Awards will be given. Medical students, residents, or
fellows who are pursuing combined clinical and research training towards becoming a pediatric
nephrologist are eligible. One award will recognize the best abstract on patient-oriented
research and one the best basic science abstract, based on the quality of the work. The awards
will consist of an honorarium and complimentary registration. Candidates for the Trainee
Research Award will be solicited during the Call for Abstracts. Award cannot be received in two
consecutive years.

Candidates must fulfill the following conditions:
    Must be a medical student, resident, or fellow pursuing combined clinical and research
      training toward becoming a pediatric nephrologist.
    First authorship on an abstract submitted to the ASPN/PAS Annual Meeting in the field
      of pediatric nephrology that is accepted for presentation.
    Awardees will be expected to present their abstract at one of the sessions at the annual
      ASPN/PAS meeting.
    Presentation of the awards will take place at the ASPN Awards Luncheon.

Application Process:
   Medical students, residents, and fellows must provide written confirmation of their
      educational/training status.
   Submission of a completed ASPN Trainee Research Application Form (included with the
      PAS abstract submission program).
   Complete submission packet must be received as directed in the submission program.
