Looking out for your MATES is important
LivingWorks Start is a 90-minute online training program that prepares trainees with the skills to recognise when
someone is having thoughts of suicide and respond to keep them safe.

Thanks to several generous supporters, we have 50 programs available for Shedders to do free of charge. But wait
there's more! We also have Trademutt work shirts to give away when you have completed the course.

To sign up for the course, send your name, email address and Shed details to stuart@mensshed.net and you will
receive a link to the program. Easy!

                                             Col’s a conversation starter
Colin Chapman (Cessnock Men's Shed and Garden, NSW) takes the
wellbeing of his fellow shedders seriously. So much so he signed up
for the free LivingWorks Start program that not only covers how to
have a difficult conversation about suicide with someone you're
concerned about, it also talks about how to keep them safe and the
best people to link them with.

Col received the TradeMutt 'This is a conversation starter' shirt on
                                             completion of the program.

AMSA Membership By-Laws updated with explanatory notes
Dear Shedders,
As with all Men’s Sheds and Associations, there are rules that qualify membership to the organisation. The
Australian Men’s Shed Association Rules of Membership define the eligibility and criteria of membership to the
Association by setting standards to protect the brand of Men’s Sheds and the goodwill of the organisation. They
also determine the obligations of members to retain membership while allowing them to remain independent
within their operations.
Following meetings with State Associations, and as part of our commitment to continuous improvement as well as
one of the deliverables within our Federal Department of Health Funding Agreement, the AMSA Board has
reviewed and amended the Rules of Membership By-Laws consistent with Section 14 of the AMSA Constitution
and the Corporations Act 2001.
During the review process a number of considerations were given to:
    1. Maintain clarity and transparency.
    2. Address issues and concerns raised by Member Men’s Sheds and State Associations (members and non-
       members).
    3. Remain aligned to the requirements of our organisation and consistent with best practice standards.
What has changed?
The Rules of Membership have been divided into three sections:
    a) Men’s Shed Members;
    b) State Association Members; and
    c) Non Men’s Shed Subscribers (organisations that wish to utilise AMSA’s information and resources, that
are not Men’s Sheds. These subscribers have no voting entitlements, are not listed on our website nor are
included in the overall national tally of Men’s Sheds).
As far as Men’s Shed Membership goes, very little has changed. An emphasis has been placed on clarifying that an
AMSA Men’s Shed Member must be a legal entity (or in the case of an unincorporated auspiced shed, the parent
body is the eligible member). This is similar to the membership clause in Men’s Shed Constitutions that state to be
eligible you must be a living person (legally exist). In our case a member must also legally exist, this is especially
important when it comes to voting.
As State Associations maintain separate membership independent from AMSA and there is no membership
alignment or liability of quantifying State Association Membership to AMSA, all of the previously contentious
issues raised have now been removed. With this development, AMSA welcomes all State Associations back into
our organisation providing they meet the eligibility requirements set out in the By-Laws.
We have composed a full set of Explanatory Notes detailing the reasoning of each rule to avoid misinterpretation
or any misunderstandings. You can find the Membership By-Laws and Explanatory Notes at:
www.mensshed.org/governancepolicy.
Please use the board@mensshed.net email should you have any questions.
Best wishes,
Paul

Preventing noise-induced hearing loss
Are you at risk of noise-induced hearing loss?

Almost one in five Australians are at risk of permanent hearing loss from
noise exposure simply doing everyday things. Noise-induced hearing
loss is a largely preventable but irreversible condition.

Have you ever noticed ringing in your ears after being exposed to loud
sounds? Read more and get some tips for safe listening at home or in
