CLC Theatre Department presents THEATRE Desdemona A play about a handkerchief By Paula Vogel “Vogel remains one of the smartest, most original and engaging playwrights to come along.” – NY Newsday As the wrongly accused and suffering wife of Shakespeare’s tragic Moor, Othello, Desdemona has long been viewed as the “victim of circumstance.” But as Pulitzer Prize-winner Paula Vogel demonstrates in her comic deconstruction of Shakespeare’s play— aligning tongue-in-cheek humor while raising serious questions as to the role of women through the ages—Desdemona was far from the quivering naïf we’ve all come to know. INTERNATIONAL FILMS CLC International Film Series All screenings in C105 at 7 p.m. (except where noted) Sponsored by the Center for Global Engagement Part One: Friday, Jan. 27 (Holocaust Memorial Day) Part Two: Saturday, Jan. 28 Shoah (France/Israel, 1985) Anyone with a serious interest in cinema or history owes it to themselves to watch this rarely-screened Holocaust documentary, produced over the course of eleven years by director/interviewer Claude Lanzmann. Shoah is comprised of interview footage, offering shattering testimony from survivors as well as surreptitious recordings of Nazi participants (at times endangering the filmmakers). “One of the noblest films ever made,” wrote Roger Ebert. “It is not a documentary, not journalism, not propaganda, not political. It is an act of witness.” NOTE: Due to its nine-hour running time, Shoah will be shown over two consecutive evenings, with each screening beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, March 3 After Life (Japan, 1998) When you die, you’ll be sent to an office and given a few days to select your favorite memory, which will be staged and recorded by counsellors so you can take it with you to the afterlife. This is an early film from Hirokazu Kore-eda, whose gentle humanism was seen in our previous screenings of Still Walking and Shoplifters. Here, he achieves beguiling effects by combining the fantastic premise with documentary footage of non-actors recounting their lives. Pulitzer Prize winner Viet Thanh Nguyen: “a great movie … feels like an eternity (in a positive sense), we lose track of time and are swept away in bliss.” Visit www.clcillinois.edu/arts for more information.
Friday, April 7 Sakawa (Ghana/Netherlands, 2018) You’ve probably received the emails – a Nigerian Prince has a fortune to share, if only you send a small deposit first. Similar kinds of cyber-fraud originate in Ghana, but with a supernatural twist – criminals routinely consult fetish priests for elaborate rituals to follow, thus ‘ensuring’ the success of their schemes. This documentary, by Ghanaian filmmaker Ben Asamoah, provides intimate access to a group of such scammers, depicting their lives without condescension, and in the process reveals striking truths about globalization. “Unfiltered and powerful … a dark statement on the unintended effects of economic advancement” – Vice Friday, May 5 The Destiny of Lesser Animals (Ghana, 2011) Deported back to Ghana in the wake of 9/11, a police detective procures a fake passport to return to his girlfriend in NYC. But when a motorcycle thief snatches a bag containing the forgery, he’s forced to use professional resources without letting his colleagues know the full story. American director Deron Albright co-wrote the screenplay and produced the film with Ghanaian actor Yao B. Nunoo (who plays the detective). “The result is a level of authenticity and resonance that would have been otherwise difficult for a foreigner to achieve.” – Hollywood Reporter NOTE: Virtual interview with the director to follow the screening. WARNING: Films have adult content and are not suitable for children. Subtitled when necessary. For information, contact Chris Cooling at ccooling@clcillinois.edu or (847) 543-2623.
