Talent Fo Sho: For personalities, reimagining
what a career in radio might look like may
have been coming either way. “A lot of what is
happening now would have happened eventually,”
explains the namesake of SBG’s Sam Alex Show.
“The pandemic is speeding everything up, so
there’s more of an immediate need.”
Alex is one of many air talents featured in the
new book Go Syndicate Yourself! by syndicated Sam Alex
personality Randy “R Dub!” Williams. The tome
hails syndication as “a pathway toward expanding your broadcast
career and as a backup to protect its very existence.”
To that end, the mindset for personalities may need to shift
toward running their own shop. “I’ve always considered myself
more of an entrepreneur than just an employee,” says Alex.
After leaving Townsquare’s Taste of Country Nights, he was
encouraged by several musician friends to start and own his own
show. “They would say, ‘Hey, even though we are represented
by a record label, we are entrepreneurs and our own boss.’”
Looking at his career as a brand and small business led him to
realize those aren’t platform specific. Hence Alex’s broadcasting
camp, television work and new book.
Brand Knew: Those extensions can even be across dayparts.
Not only is Silverfish Media Dir./Programming Carsen the co-
host for Big D & Bubba, she’s also the host of syndicated midday
show Country With Carsen. “We’re used to
syndication in other dayparts, so it’s a matter of
expounding the benefits of a live midday jock
who is there to talk to listeners and be there with
breaking news,” she says. “It might take a few
discussions to get through to a PD that I’m really
there live and not tracked a few days ahead.”
Once the brand is established – with owners
and listeners – living up to it is key. “To an
audience, it’s the one-to-one interaction,” Carsen Carsen
says. “Creating relationships on the air, then
taking it to socials, then utilizing socials to interact with other people
who might not have been P1s but had interests in common. Then
bringing that content back to the air, keeping it circular and moving.”
Late last month, Bryan “B Dub” Washington expanded
his B-Dub Radio Saturday Night to weeknights with Skyview
Networks. That’s in addition to his afternoon drive show on
KNUC/Seattle. “B-Dub Radio will have the same energy and
quality I deliver every weekday in Seattle,” he
says. “It has to be major market sounding, or
there’s no point in doing it in the first place,”
he says. Local support is also key. “Syndication
works best when you have a buy-in on the
local level. I’ve seen stations that run shows
and have embraced them as part of their own
brand, and they do quite well. If it’s not woven
into the fabric of the station, you are less likely
                                                                             B-Dub
       to achieve success.”
Ultimately, syndication needs to be part of the greater evolution.
“We need to think bigger,” says Wolkoff. “Not just radio, but audio.
I have no doubt radio will continue to exist 100 years from now,
but in a different form. Someone in one part of the country or the
world will be communicating and connecting with others elsewhere
through audio. We need to embrace that communication and find
new ways to make it happen.” –Sue Wilson
