Some suggestions we received were families setting a table in front of the TV before
Mass begins; place on it a white cloth, a Bible and even candles and flowers. This helps
set a home altar and a sacred space. You might find this helpful for focusing your prayer.

       ASCENSION SUNDAY - May 24, 2020
                                    --------- + ----------

PRE-MASS PRAYER: (All) Our Lady of Seattle, Undoer of Knots
Holy Mary, we come before you as spiritual children in great need, seeking your
intercession, and asking that your mantle of love surround us to console, protect, and lead
us to your son Jesus. We entrust all of God’s family, especially the Church in Western
Washington, into your Immaculate hands. With your Son Jesus’ gentle power, you can
undo any knot in our Church, and in the lives of believers, who entrust themselves to
your care. Today, I especially entrust to you for the end to the virus pandemic, and I ask
that – through your intercession, and that of Saint James, our Guardian Angels, and the
faithful in our diocese – we may be free from every spiritual and temporal ill, and be
safely led to encounter your Son’s Merciful, Sacred Heart. Our Lady of Seattle, Undoer
of Knots, pray for us. Amen.

LITURGY OF THE WORD
First Reading: Acts of the Apostles 1:1-11
In the first book, Theophilus, I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught until the day he
was taken up, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he
had chosen. He presented himself alive to them by many proofs after he had suffered,
appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. While
meeting with them, he enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for “the
promise of the Father about which you have heard me speak; for John baptized with
water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” When they had
gathered together they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the
kingdom to Israel?” He answered them, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons
that the Father has established by his own authority. But you will receive power when the
Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout
Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” When he had said this, as they were
looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight. While they were
looking intently at the sky as he was going, suddenly two men dressed in white garments
stood beside them. They said, “Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the
sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way
as you have seen him going into heaven.”
Lector: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm: R. God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets
for the Lord.
1. All you peoples, clap your hands, shout to God with cries of gladness, for the LORD,
the Most High, the awesome, is the great king over all the earth. R.
2. God mounts his throne amid shouts of joy; the LORD, amid trumpet blasts. Sing praise
to God, sing praise; sing praise to our king, sing praise. R.
3. For king of all the earth is God; sing hymns of praise. God reigns over the nations,
God sits upon his holy throne. R.
Second Reading: Saint Paul to the Ephesians Ephesians 1:17-23
Brothers and sisters: May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you
a Spirit of wisdom and revelation resulting in knowledge of him. May the eyes of your
hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call, what
are the riches of glory in his inheritance among the holy ones, and what is the surpassing
greatness of his power for us who believe, in accord with the exercise of his great might,
which he worked in Christ, raising him from the dead and seating him at his right hand in
the heavens, far above every principality, authority, power, and dominion, and every
name that is named not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things
beneath his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the
fullness of the one who fills all things in every way.
Lector: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.
Gospel Acclamation: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!
Go and teach all nations, says the Lord; I am with you always, until the end of the world.
Priest: The Lord be with you. All: And with your spirit.
Priest: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew
                                                                                          2
All: Glory to you, O Lord
Gospel: Matthew 28:16-20
The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them.
When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said
to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and
make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And
behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”
Priest: The Gospel of the Lord All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ
HOMILY
PROFESSION OF FAITH
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things
visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true
God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were
made. For us men and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, (At the words that
follow, up to and including and became man, all bow) and by the Holy Spirit was
incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was
buried, and rose again on the third day, in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended
into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to
judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy
Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with
the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I
believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the
forgiveness of sins, and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the
world to come. Amen.
PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL
Closing Prayer: (All) O God, when I have food, help me to remember the hungry.
When I have work, help me to remember the jobless. When I have a home, help me to
remember those who have no home at all. When I am without pain, help me to
remember those who suffer. Help me to destroy my complacency, bestir my
compassion, and be concerned enough to help. Help me to be generous to the Annual
Catholic Appeal, for the many lives that are touched by its support. By word and by
deed. Amen.
                           LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST
OFFERTORY SONG: All That Is Hidden
1. If you would follow me, follow where life will lead: do not look for me among the dead,
for I am hidden in pain, risen in love; there is no harvest without sowing of grain.
R. All that is hidden will be made clear. All that is dark now will be revealed. What
have you heard in the dark proclaim in the light; what you hear in whispers proclaim
from the housetops.

                                                                                               3
2. If you would honor me, honor the least of these: you will not find me dressed in finery.
My Word cries out to be heard; breaks through the world. My Word is on your lips and
lives in your heart.
R. All that is hidden will be made clear. All that is dark now will be revealed. What
have you heard in the dark proclaim in the light; what you hear in whispers proclaim
from the housetops.
3. If you would speak of me, live all your life in me: my ways are not the ways that you
would choose; my thoughts are far beyond yours, as heaven from earth. If you believe in
me my voice will be heard. R.
4. If you would rise with me, rise through your destiny: do not refuse the death which
brings you life, for as the grain in the earth must die for rebirth, so I have planted your
life deep within mine. R.
Priest: Pray, my brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to
God, the almighty Father.
All: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, for the praise and glory of his
name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.
Priest: The Lord be with you. All: And with your spirit.
Priest: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them up to the Lord
Priest: Let us gives thanks to the Lord, our God. All: It is right and just.
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY
All: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts, Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in
the highest.
EUCHARIST PRAYER
Priest: The mystery of Faith
All: We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection, until you come
again.
COMMUNION RITE
Priest: (standing) At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to
say.
All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be
done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our
trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Priest: Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days,
that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all
distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
All: For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and forever.
Priest: Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your Apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give
you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace
and unity in accordance with you will, who you live ever and ever. All: Amen.
Priest: The peace of the Lord be with you always. All: And with your spirit.
Priest: Let us offer each other the sign of peace.

                                                                                              4
LAMB OF GOD
All: Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.
Priest: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
All: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the
word and my soul shall be healed.
COMMUNION SONG: Bread for the World
R. Bread for the world: a world of hunger. Wine for all peoples: people who thirst.
May we who eat be bread for others. May we who drink pour out our love.
1. Lord Jesus Christ, you are the bread of life, broken to reach and heal the wounds of
human pain. Where we divide your people you are waiting there on bended knee
to wash our feet with endless care. R.
2. Lord Jesus Christ, you are the wine of peace, poured into hearts once broken and
where dryness sleeps. Where we are tired and weary, you are waiting there to be the way
which beckons us beyond despair. R.
3. Lord Jesus Christ, you call us to your feast, at which the rich and pow'rful have
become the least. Where we survive on others in our human greed, you walk among us
begging for your ev'ry need. R.
Prayer for Spiritual Communion: (ALL): My Jesus, I believe that you are present in
the most holy Eucharist. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my
soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually
into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there, and unite myself wholly to
you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
FINAL BLESSING
PROCESSIONAL SONG: America the Beautiful
1. O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain. For purple mountain
majesties above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea!
2. O beautiful for pilgrim feet whose stern, impassioned stress, a thoroughfare for
freedom beat across the wilderness! America! America! God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law!
3. O beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife, who more than self their country love
And mercy more than life! America! America! May God thy gold refine, till all success be
nobleness, and every gain divine!
4. O beautiful for patriot dream that sees beyond the years, thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears! America! America! God shed His grace on thee, and crown
thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea!

                                                                                           5
