ATMA NIRBHAR BHARAT-LAKSHADWEEP INITIATIVE
THANAL CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION
UT OF LAKSHADWEEP

Thanal is registered NGO under Societies Registration Act 1860 (SR.No.557/2009) and also
a Recognized Medical Institution for Possession & Supply of Oral Morphine to Terminally Ill
Patients.

ATMA NIRBHAR BHARAT-LAKSHADWEEP INITIATIVE
When our honourable Prime Minister Mananiya Shri NARENDRA MODIJI declared Atma
Nirbhar Bharat, our NGO decided to make Lakshadweep a self-reliant one. We have totally
conceived the idea and meaning of Atma Nibhar Bharat. Lakshadweep is full of unexplored
opportunities and natural resources that will make Atma Nirbhar Bharat-Lakshadweep
initiative a suitable one. Through Atma Nirbhar Bharat, we will explore the resources in our
islands and transform them into the bricks of nation building.

We took steps to motivate the youth and women to make their innovative ideas a reality by
entrepreneurship. There are people with inherent talents in handicrafts and culinary in all
islands and we can ignite their creative ideas and innovative minds for Atma Nirbhar Bharat.
We have planned to gather creative minds and to provide reasonable options for micro or
small enterprises that will supplant the need of depending mainland. We helped youth and
women to establish some units so as they can lead a happy life in the islands.

Throughout our Atma Nirbhar Bharat Lakshadweep program we have been VOCAL for
LOCAL people, Local products and raw materials available locally. This made Atma Nirbhar
Bharat a very beautiful concept and easily conceivable dream.

THANAL PROGRAMS UNDER ATMA NIRBHAR BHARAT
    Thanal Traditional Hat Making Unit at Kiltan Island
    Traditional Coir Making Unit at Kiltan Island
    Thanal Traditional Culinary (Bakery) Unit at Amini Island
    Thanal Coconut Climbing Unit at Kavaratti Island
    Fabrication, steel welding, POP ceiling works unit at Kiltan Island

THANAL TRADITIONAL HAT MAKING UNIT AT KILTAN ISLAND
The hats were made up of coconut leaves specially processed by women entrepreneurs and
it’s a team work of women in Kiltan Island. This unit made ladies self-reliant and self-
esteemed. This unit has a production capacity of 300 hats per month. There are 21 women
working in this unit. They also get a fair income of 8000-15,000 INR per month. The raw
material also readily available and this unit is eco-friendly.

TRADITIONAL COIR MAKING UNIT AT KILTAN ISLAND
This also attached to the hat making unit. There are 18 women working in this unit. They also
get a fair income of 7000-10,000 INR per month.

THANAL TRADITIONAL CULINARY (BAKERY) UNIT AT AMINI ISLAND
The cuisines in islands are exquisite and the ladies in Amini Island are well known for their
cooking arts. We helped women to produce their bakery items and provided a platform at
marketing level. This unit has 17 women and they have started 4 outlets to distribute their
products. They earn 500-1000 INR per day.

THANAL COCONUT CLIMBING UNIT AT KAVARATTI ISLAND
This unit created job opportunities to youth and it turned out to be a successful project. We
established this unit with the help of Department of Agriculture and Krishi Vigyan Kendra.
We also provided 10 days hands on training program, climbing machines, uniforms and
certificates. We also gathered them under a roof and made them aware of life and earnings.
They also realised the effectiveness of team work and enjoy helping each other.

This unit has 36 coconut climbers at Kavaratti Island. They also earn 32,000 to 84,000 INR
per month. We also provided an office to them. We have planned to expand this project to all
islands.

FABRICATION, STEEL WELDING, POP CEILING WORKS UNIT AT KILTAN
ISLAND
This unit provides a basic training to youth who are interested in this type of work. 10 young
men work in steel welding unit and they are earning 15,000 per month. 20 men work in
fabrication unit and they have earnings of 17,000 per month. POP ceiling works has 12 youth
and they also earn 17,000-20,000 per month.

        Collaborating Agency of CHILDLINE India foundation, Ministry of Women &
         Child Development since 2016 (fourth consecutive term)
        Day & Night 1098 emergency phone service
        Awareness in Schools
        Educational activities
        Rehabilitation of disabled students
  3. Para Legal Services
        We exercise active Para legal services voluntarily to resolve the issues outside the
         court. We act as mediator as per the instructions from Honourable District Court.
  4. Day Care Services
        This service is provided for Geriatric Patients to get over with their boredom and
         to fill their days with happiness
  5. Free ambulance services are provided for all patients
  6. Medical camps
        Camps for Cancer Screening, Free eye camps & free cataract surgeries in
         Mainland, Free surgery campaign for Cleft lip/Cleft Palate at Kavaratti, Free
         Medical Advice & Medical support
  7. Anti Tobacco & Anti Drugs Campaign
        Active Member of District Anti-Tobacco Committee, Kavaratti Island and provide
         counselling for quitting tobacco.

 Nursing Excellency Award
In consideration of outstanding performance in palliative nursing care and the
vying attempt in improving quality of life among natives of Lakshadweep.
 Organic Farming Innovation Award
In consideration of innovative ideas in achieving success in organic farming in
Lakshadweep.

THANAL CENTRES
LAKSHADWEEP INSTITUTE OF PALLIATIVE MEDICINE
It was on 27th march 2013; the palliative care in Lakshadweep has been officially
inaugurated. This day is remarkable because the budding of corals ensued that day. The
palliative care center has been officially inaugurated by PadmaShri Prof. Dr.M.R.Rajagopal,
Chairman of Pallium India on 27th march 2013. And on 27th march 2014, we have
inaugurated our own office in Kavaratti.
The drugs controller of Kerala state upgraded our institution as RECOGNIZED MEDICAL
INSTITUTION for possession & supply of Oral Morphine to terminally ill patients.

FOSTER CENTRE FOR LEARNING & RESEARCH
We provide foster link with students and teachers who approach for study/ research/ thesis
work. We also treat them with utmost respect and hospitality. Many students from various
parts of the country reach our centre and learn social service and palliative care.

COUNCIL FOR ORGANIC FARMING
We promote organic and rooftop farming in all islands. We also provide seed kit and expert
guidance.

COVID-19 AWARENESS CENTRE
Thanal has initiated awareness program for preventing COVID-19 and strengthening social
distancing and sanitisation ward by ward. We also distributed pamphlets to spread awareness
among public.

   The drugs controller of Kerala state has approved our need for morphine and
    upgraded our institution as RECOGNIZED MEDICAL INSTITUTION.
