Avant Garde Academy
Mission Statement
Our mission is to prepare students with the knowledge and skill set needed to impact their
surroundings from a global perspective. Avant Garde Academy will provide a nurturing and
safe climate that promotes the development of the total child by implementing an innovative,
creative, student-centered environment where students are challenged intellectually, artistically,
and personally.
From the principal’s desk…
February is nationally recognized by the American Heart Association as “#HeartMonth”.
This year we are fortunate to partner with them to raise awareness of Heart Health through our
Jump Rope for Heart Fundraiser. All students will participate in an assembly on Monday in
which they will learn important facts about cardiovascular health and learn more about the
fundraiser jump rope challenge. Funds raised will be used for recess and PE equipment.
Over the past few weeks, we have had many students (and staff) absent because of
illness, with some reporting cases of the flu. Please encourage your child to cough or sneeze
into the bend of his/her arm and wash hands with soap regularly. Additionally, if your child is
running a fever of 99.2 degrees or higher, he/she must stay home until fever-free for 24 hours.
Please remember to notify the school if your child is absent by emailing the teacher or calling
the school.Upcoming events

Coach Weisman’s Corner…
Last weekend, the NHL and Navy Federal Credit Union hosted the first annual Veterans Showcase
Tournament in Colorado Springs and Denver, Colorado. Coach Weisman is a United States Navy
Veteran and plays for the Tampa Warriors, an all disabled better and hockey team. The Tampa
Warriors were selected as one of the four teams to participate in the tournament. The others three
teams were from Washington D.C., Dallas, and Team Coast Guard. Coach Weisman stood out on the
Tampa Warriors, and recorded 3 goals, 2 assists, along with 2 penalty minutes. They played 3 friendly
games against each team and then were off to go see the Outdoor Classic presented by the NHL at
Falcon Stadium on the Air Force Base in Colorado Springs between the Colorado Avalanche and the Los
Angeles Kings. It was a cold 25 degrees all night long, but as the game ended, the Warrior teams were
presented with a surprise... they were granted access to go on the ice after the game. The next
morning, they were going to have a skills competition between all the Warrior teams on the NHL ice!
Coach did not win the shootout competition in which he competed, but he was recognized as the Most
Valuable Player of the tournament by his teammates and coaches for the Tampa Veterans and
received a warm-up puck from the Avalanche game. An overall great experience that Coach and his
teammates will never forget!Kindergarten Corner
Kindergarten students have been excited about learning! We have spent this term learning all
sorts of new sounds. We have learned about digraphs, vowel teams, the bossy r, magic e, blends,
and the ing sound! It has been very fun to SEE these new sounds pop up in our everyday reading
and writing! We have also become good mathematicians by working with our friend Gus the Plus! We
have practiced addition with a variety of strategies and supplies. We have acted as molecules and
moved around like solids, liquids, and gases and we have enjoyed learning about many American
Symbols. I think our favorite might be Mount Rushmore!
We will continue to grow and learn as we write about our opinions, meet Gus's evil friend Linus the
Minus, practice the science of motion, and celebrate Dr. Seuss. Kindergarten is the place to be!2nd Grade … Animals with Poems from the Heart ❤️ Second Grade students are loving February and poetry writing. We have been learning about animals in nature and expressing our love for them through poetry. Each student chose an animal and practiced writing poem about that animal in different forms. Haiku, Alliteration, Acrostic and Diamante poems are a few forms learned and practiced. After writing, our 2nd graders creatively designed their animal completely out of heart shapes. Fantastic February writing instills such a love for poetry! Great job 2nd graders!
