INTRODUCTION
P We gather In the Name of the Father,
   and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
C And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen.
PRAYER FOR THE NATION
P Almighty God, you have called us to be citizens of this nation,
   enable us in this time of trouble to walk worthy of our calling.
   Unite us all in true Christian love and charity one towards another.
   Help us to bear with patience and fortitude the burdens which may
   be laid upon us. Keep us calm, steadfast, and unselfish; and grant
   that in all our troubles we may put our whole trust and confidence
   in your mercy, and evermore serve you in holiness and pureness
   of living, to your honour and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
C Amen.
GATHERING SONG             Sung by Cantor
As With Gladness Men of Old (all verses) No. 302
1   As with gladness men of old did the guiding star behold;
    as with joy they hailed its light, leading onward, beaming bright;
    so, most gracious Lord, may we evermore be led by thee.
2 As with joyful steps they sped, Savior, to thy lowly bed,
    there to bend the knee before thee, whom heav'n and earth adore;
    so may we with willing feet ever seek thy mercy seat.
3 As they offered gifts most rare at thy cradle, rude and bare,
    so may we with holy joy, pure and free from sin’s alloy,
    all our costliest treasures bring, Christ, to thee, our heavenly King.
4   Holy Jesus, ev'ry day keep us in the narrow way;
    and when earthly things are past, bring our ransomed souls at last
    where they need no star to guide, where no clouds thy glory hide.
5   In the heav'nly county bright need they no created light;
    thou its light, its joy, its crown, thou its sun which goes not down;
    there forever may we sing alleluias to our king.
GREETING
P The presence of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the
     communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.
C And also with you.
CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS
The Congregation and Minister may stand or kneel. A moment of silence shall
be kept for reflection and self-examination. Then shall the Minister say:
P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart, and
    confess our sins to God our Father, asking him, in the name of our
    Lord Jesus Christ, to grant us forgiveness. Let us confess our sin in
    the presence of God and of one another.
C Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners
    confess to you that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that
    we have sinned against you by thought, word, and deed.
    We are truly repentant of all our sins. For the sake of your dear
    son Jesus Christ, we come seeking and imploring your grace,
    that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your
    name. Amen.
P Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has mercy on us and has
    given his only Son to die for us and for his sake forgives us all our
    sins. To those who believe in his name, he gives power to become
    the children of God and has promised them his Holy Spirit.
    Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved.
   Upon this your confession, … C Amen.
KYRIE                     Spoken
P Lord have mercy upon us. C Lord have mercy upon us.
P Christ have mercy upon us. C Christ have mercy upon us.
P Lord have mercy upon us. C Lord have mercy upon us.
HYMN OF PRAISE
P Glory be to God on high!
C And peace to his people on earth.
Sung by Cantor:
    All Glory Be to God on High and thanks to Him forever!
    Whatever Satan's host may try, God foils their dark endeavor.
    He bends His ear to every call, and offers peace, goodwill to all,
         and calms the troubled spirit. Amen.
COLLECT OF THE DAY
P Let us pray. Lord God, heavenly Father, who in mercy have
    established the Christian home among us: We ask You so to rule
    and direct our hearts, that we may be good examples to children
    and servants, and not offend them by word or deed, but faithfully
    teach them to love Your Church and hear Your blessed word. Give
    them Your Spirit and grace, that this seed may bring forth good
    fruit, so that our homelife may lead to Your glory, honour and
    praise, to our own improvement and welfare, and, give offense to
    no one; through the same, your beloved Son, Jesus Christ our Lord,
    who lives and reigns with Your and the Holy Ghost, ever one God,
    world without end.                                       C Amen.

THE PROCLAMATION
                            First Lesson
Genesis 1:1-5
    1 In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, 2

the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the
deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. 3 Then
God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. 4 And God saw that
the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5
God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there
was evening and there was morning, the first day.
A This is the word of our Lord C Thanks be to God

ascribe to the Lord glo- / ry and strength.
   Ascribe to the Lord the glory / of his name;

                              Second Lesson
Acts 19:1-7
     1 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior

regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. 2 He said
to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?"
They replied, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."
3 Then he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They answered,

"Into John's baptism." 4 Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of
repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come
after him, that is, in Jesus." 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the
name of the Lord Jesus. 6 When Paul had laid his hands on them, the
Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and
prophesied-- 7 altogether there were about twelve of them.

HYMN OF THE DAY Sung by Cantor
    When Jesus Came to Jordan (all verses) No. 305
1 When Jesus came to Jordan to be baptized by John,
   he did not come for pardon but as the Sinless One.
   He came to share repentance with all who mourn their sins,
   to speak the vital sentence with which good news begins.
2 He came to share temptation, our utmost woe and loss,
   for us and our salvation to die upon the cross.
   So when the dove descended on him, the Son of Man,
   the hidden years had ended, the age of grace began.
3 Come, Holy Spirit, aid us to keep the vows we make,
   this very day invade us, and every bondage break.
   Come, give our lives direction, the gift we covet most:
   to share the resurrection that leads to Pentecost.

A Let us pray for all who are blind to the injustices of our world, that
    their eyes may be opened and that they may work for an end to
    oppression and injustice. Lord, in your mercy,
C hear our prayer.
    Here other intercessions may be offered.
A Let us pray for the sick that their sickness may be turned to health
    and that they may once again join us in our work and worship.

OFFERTORY HYMN              Sung by Cantor
   Hail to the Lord’s Anointed (all verses ) No. 311
1 Hail to the Lord's anointed, great David's greater Son!
    Hail, in the time appointed, your reign on earth begun!
    You come to break oppression, to set the captive free,
    to take away transgression and rule in equity.
2 You come with rescue speedy to those who suffer wrong,
    to help the poor and needy, and bid the weak be strong;
    to give them sons for sighing, their darkness turn to light,
    whose souls, condemned and dying, are precious in your sight.
3   You shall come down like showers upon the fruitful earth;
    love, joy, and hope, like flowers, spring in your path to birth.
    Before you on the mountains shall peace, the herald, go;
    and righteousness in fountains from hill to valley flow.
4   Kings shall fall down before you, and gold and incense bring;
    all nations shall adore you, your praise all people sing.
    To you shall prayer unceasing and daily vows ascend;
    your kingdom still increasing, a kingdom without end.
OFFERTORY PRAYER
C We thank you and praise you for such bountiful gifts, of which
   we now offer only a portion back to you.

CLOSING HYMN                 Sung by Cantor
   Songs of Thankfulness and Praise (all verses) No. 310
1 Songs of thankfulness and praise, Jesus, Lord, to thee we raise;
   manifested by the star to the sages from afar,
   branch of royal David's stem in thy birth at Bethlehem:
   anthems be to thee addressed, God in flesh made manifest.
2 Manifest at Jordan's stream, prophet, priest, and king supreme;
   and at Cana wedding guest in your God-head manifest;
   manifest in pow'r divine, changing water into wine;
   anthems be to thee addressed, God in flesh made manifest.
3 Manifest in making whole weakened body, fainting soul;
   manifest in valiant fight, quelling all the devil's might;
   manifest in gracious will, ever bringing good from ill:
   anthems be to thee addressed, God in flesh made manifest.
4 Grant us grace to see thee, Lord, present in thy holy word;
   grace to imitate thee now and be pure, as pure art thou;
   that we might become like thee at Thy great epiphany,
