THE FIRST READING
A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 31:7-14
Thus says the Lord:
       Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob,
             and raise shouts for the chief of the nations;
       proclaim, give praise, and say,
             "Save, O Lord, your people,
             the remnant of Israel."
       See, I am going to bring them from the land of the north,
             and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth,
       among them the blind and the lame, those with child and
             those in labor, together;
             a great company, they shall return here.
                                                           Continued on Next Pg.
                                      5
With weeping they shall come,
            and with consolations I will lead them back,
      I will let them walk by brooks of water,
            in a straight path in which they shall not stumble;
      for I have become a father to Israel,
            and Ephraim is my firstborn.
      Hear the word of the Lord, O nations,
            and declare it in the coastlands far away;
      say, "He who scattered Israel will gather him,
            and will keep him as a shepherd a flock."
      For the Lord has ransomed Jacob,
            and has redeemed him from hands too strong for him.
      They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion,
            and they shall be radiant over the goodness of the Lord,
      over the grain, the wine, and the oil,
            and over the young of the flock and the herd;
      their life shall become like a watered garden,
            and they shall never languish again.
      Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance,
            and the young men and the old shall be merry.
      I will turn their mourning into joy,
            I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow.
      I will give the priests their fill of fatness,
            and my people shall be satisfied with my bounty,
               says the Lord.

Reader: The Word of the Lord.
People:       Thanks be to God.

THE GRADUAL                                              Psalm 84:1-8
  1 How dear to me is your dwelling, O Lord of hosts! *
      My soul has a desire and longing for the courts of
      the Lord;
      my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.
  2 The sparrow has found her a house
      and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young; *
      by the side of your altars, O Lord of hosts,
      my King and my God.
  3 Happy are they who dwell in your house! *
      they will always be praising you.
                                   6
4 Happy are the people whose strength is in you! *
      whose hearts are set on the pilgrims' way.
  5 Those who go through the desolate valley will find it a place of
      springs, *
      for the early rains have covered it with pools of water.
  6 They will climb from height to height, *
      and the God of gods will reveal himself in Zion.
  7 Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer; *
      hearken, O God of Jacob.
  8 Behold our defender, O God; *
      and look upon the face of your Anointed.

THE SECOND READING
A Reading from Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians 1:3-6,15-19a
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed
us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, just as he
chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blame-
less before him in love. He destined us for adoption as his children through
Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his
glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. I have heard
of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for
this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my
prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory,
may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him,
so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the
hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious
inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of
his power for us who believe.

Reader: The Word of the Lord.
People:         Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL                                          Matthew 2:1-12
Celebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ,
                according to Matthew.
People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.
In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea,
wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, "Where is the child
who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising,
and have come to pay him homage." When King Herod heard this, he was
frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief
priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah
was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been
written by the prophet: `And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by
no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler
who is to shepherd my people Israel.'" Then Herod secretly called for the
wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had
appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search
diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so
that I may also go and pay him homage." When they had heard the king,
they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at
its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they
saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On
entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they
knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they
offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been
warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country
by another road.

Celebrant: The Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE NICENE CREED BCP p. 358
     We believe in one God,
            the Father, the Almighty,
            maker of heaven and earth,
            of all that is, seen and unseen.
     We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
            the only Son of God,
            eternally begotten of the Father,
                                                           Continued on Next Pg.
                                     9
God from God, Light from Light,
              true God from true God,
              begotten, not made,
              of one Being with the Father.
              Through him all things were made.
              For us and for our salvation
              he came down from heaven:
              by the power of the Holy Spirit
              he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
              and was made man.
              For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
              he suffered death and was buried.
              On the third day he rose again
              in accordance with the Scriptures;
              he ascended into heaven
              and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
              He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
              and his kingdom will have no end.
       We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
              who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
              With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
              He has spoken through the Prophets.
              We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
              We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
              We look for the resurrection of the dead,
              and the life of the world to come. Amen.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER C                                           BCP p. 369
Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
People:       And also with you.
Celebrant:    Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them to the Lord.
Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Celebrant: God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of
              glory and praise.
People: Glory to you for ever and ever.
Celebrant: At your command all things came to be: the vast
              expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets
              in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home.
People: By your will they were created and have their being.
Celebrant: From the primal elements you brought forth the human
              race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You
              made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you,
              and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one
              another.
People: Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.

                                                           Continued on Next Pg.
                                    13
Celebrant: Again and again, you called us to return. Through
               prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And
               in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a
               woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of
               freedom and peace.
People: By his blood, he reconciled us.
               By his wounds, we are healed.
Celebrant: And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly
               chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all
               those in every generation who have looked to you in hope,
               to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:

SANCTUS                                                         WLP 858

The people stand or kneel.
Celebrant: And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and
               made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring
               before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to
               be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord.
               On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the
               blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and
               said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for
               you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
                                    14
After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and
               said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new
               Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the
               forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for
               the remembrance of me.”
               Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to
               you this sacrifice of thanksgiving.
Celebrant We celebrate his death and resurrection,
and People: as we await the day of his coming.
Celebrant: Lord God of our Fathers; God of Abraham and Sarah, Isaac
               and Rebeka, and Jacob, Leah and Rachel; God and Father
               of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at
               work in the world about us. Deliver us from the
               presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and
               not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let
               the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body,
               one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world
               in his name.
People: Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the
               Bread.
Celebrant: Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus
               Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the
               Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship,
               from generation to generation. Amen.
               And now, as our Savior
               Christ has taught us,
               We are bold to say,

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father who art in heaven, as we forgive those
hallowed be thy Name, who trespass against us.
thy Kingdom come, And lead us not into temptation,
thy will be done, but deliver us from evil.
on earth as it is in heaven. For thine is the kingdom,
Give us this day our daily bread. and the power, and the glory
And forgive us our trespasses, for ever and ever. Amen.

People: Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL COMMUNION
Celebrant and People:
My Jesus,
I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come spiritually into my heart.

                             by Lawton
             Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,
                           have mercy on us.
             Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,
                           have mercy on us.
             Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,
                     grant us peace, grant us peace.

COMMUNION             “The Star Hymn”

                                    16
17
Celebrant: Let us pray. BCP p. 366
Celebrant and People:
Almighty and everliving God,
we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food
of the most precious Body and Blood
of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ;
and for assuring us in these holy mysteries
that we are living members of the Body of your Son,
and heirs of your eternal kingdom.
And now, Father, send us out
to do the work you have given us to do,
to love and serve you
as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord.
To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit,
be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

PEACE PRAYER OF ST. FRANCIS BCP p. 833 #62
Celebrant and People:
Lord, make us instruments of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let us sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is discord, union;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

THE BLESSING
Celebrant: May Christ, the Son of God, be manifest in you, that your
           lives may be a light to the world; and the blessing of God
           Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be
           among you, and remain with you always. Amen.

                                   18
Please stand.

                 of the Spirit.

#1 Come Ye Sinners
      Come, ye sinners, poor and needy,
      Weak and wounded, sick and sore;
       Jesus ready stands to save you,
        Full of pity, love and pow’r.

         I will arise and go to Jesus,
      He will embrace me in His arms;
       In the arms of my dear Savior,
      Oh, there are ten thousand charms.

    Come, ye thirsty, come, and welcome,
         God’s free bounty glorify;
      True belief and true repentance,
      Every grace that brings you nigh.

         I will arise and go to Jesus,
      He will embrace me in His arms;
       In the arms of my dear Savior,
      Oh, there are ten thousand charms.

        Come, ye weary, heavy-laden,
          Lost and ruined by the fall;
        If you wait until you’re better,
          You will never come at all.

         I will arise and go to Jesus,
      He will embrace me in His arms;
       In the arms of my dear Savior,
      Oh, there are ten thousand charms.

          #2 In the Bleak Midwinter
     Vocalists: Jonathan Cummings & Russell McFee

In the bleak midwinter frosty winds made moan.
  Earth stood hard as iron. Water like a stone.
Snow had fallen softly, snow on snow, on snow,
     In the bleak midwinter, long long ago.
          Heaven cannot hold Him
            Nor the earth sustain
       Heaven and earth shall flee away
       When He comes to reign
                                                Continued on Next Pg.
                        21
#2 In the Bleak Midwinter
                    (cont’d)

In the bleak midwinter a stable placed surfaced
      For the Lord Almighty Jesus Christ
Angels and archangels they have gathered there.
  Cherubim and seraphim rising from the air.
  But His mother Mary in her maiden's bliss,
  Worshipped the beloved with a gentle kiss.
      What can I give Him, poor as I am?
 If I were a shepherd, would I bring a lamb?
  If I were a wise man, would I do my part?
Yet what can I give Him? I will give my heart.

          #3 Draw Me Nearer
            I am Thine, O Lord,
         I have heard Your voice,
        And it told Your love to me
              But I long to rise
                in the arms of faith
        And be closer drawn to Thee
               Draw me nearer,
      to the cross where Thou hast died
               Draw me nearer,
           to Your precious, bleeding side
        There are great depths of love
                   that I cannot know
         Till I cross the narrow sea
          There are heights of joy
                  that I may not reach
        Till I rest in peace with Thee
               Draw me nearer
      to the cross where Thou hast died
               Draw me nearer
           to Your precious, bleeding side
       You draw me with Your mercy,
        You draw me with Your love,
       You draw me with forgiveness
                 by Your blood

                        22
You draw me with compassion,
                        You draw me as a bride
                        You draw me closer to
                           Your precious side
                          Consecrate me now
                             to Your service, Lord
                      By the power of grace divine
                          Let my soul look up
                             with a steadfast hope
                      And my will be lost in Thine
                             Draw me nearer,
                    to the cross where Thou hast died
                             Draw me nearer,
                     to Your precious, bleeding side
                             Draw me nearer,
                    to the cross where Thou hast died
                             Draw me nearer,
                         to Your precious, bleeding side

Prayer for Travelers - O God, our heavenly Father, whose glory fills the
whole creation, and whose presence we find wherever we go: Preserve
those who travel; surround them with your loving care; protect them
from every danger; and bring them in safety to their journey's end;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer for Birthdays - O God, our times are in your hand: Look with
favor, we pray, on your servant (s) as they begin another year. Grant
that they may grow in wisdom and grace, and strengthen their trust in
your goodness all the days of their life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Prayer for Anniversaries - Almighty God, giver of life and love, bless
these thy servants. Grant them wisdom and devotion in the ordering of
their common life, that each may be to the other a strength in need,
a counselor in perplexity, a comfort in sorrow, and a companion in joy.
And so knit their wills together in your will and their spirits in your
Spirit, that they may live together in love and peace all the days of their
life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
